GENIUS-TF (Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 511 (2003) 341; Nucl. Instr. and Meth. A 481 (2002) 149.) is a test-facility for the GENIUS project (GENIUS-Proposal, 20 November 1997; Z. Phys. Krivosheina (Eds.), Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Particle Physics Beyond the Standard Model BEYOND’ 99, Castle Ringberg, Germany 6–12 June 1999, IOP Bristol (2000) 915), a proposed large scale underground observatory for rare events which is based on operation of naked germanium detectors in liquid nitrogen for an extreme background reduction. Operation of naked Ge crystals in liquid nitrogen has been applied routinely already for more than 20 years by the CANBERRA Company for technical functions tests (CANBERRA Company, private communication, 5 March 2004.), but it never had found entrance into basic research. Only in 1997 first tests of application of this method for nuclear spectroscopy have been performed, successfully, in Heidelberg (Klapdor-Kleingrothaus et al., 1997, 1998; J. Hellmig and H.V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus, 1997).
On May 5, 2003 the first four naked high-purity germanium detectors (total mass 10.52 kg) were installed in liquid nitrogen in the GENIUS Test Facility at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Since then the experiment has been running continuously, testing for the first time the novel technique in an underground laboratory and for a long-lasting period.
In this work, we present the first analysis of the GENIUS-TF background after the completion of the external shielding, which took place in December 2003. We focus especially on the background coming from 222Rn daughters. This is found to be at present by a factor of 200 higher than expected from simulation. It is still compatible with the scientific goal of GENIUS-TF, namely to search for cold dark matter by the modulation signal, but on the present level would cause serious problems for a full GENIUS—like experiment using liquid nitrogen. 相似文献
In a landmark paper published over two decades ago, Kerr et al. proposed the term apoptosis "for a hitherto little recognized mechanism of controlled cell deletion, which appears to play a complementary but opposite role to mitosis in the regulation of animal cell populations". In the ensuing years, this natural cell death process was studied at the basic science level, primarily with a view to understanding its roles in cancer and in the development and maintenance of the immune system. More recently, however, evidence has suggested a role for the failure of normal apoptosis control in many of the major diseases of the industrialized world. Though complex, apoptosis appears amenable to therapeutic intervention. The range of modern pharmaceutical strategies available to treat such disregulated gene-directed processes offers promise for advances in the control of cancer, immune system and neurodegenerative disorders, heart disease, and perhaps even the aging process itself. 相似文献
The design of an adaptive learning regulator is addressed for uncertain minimum phase linear systems (with known bounds, known upper bound on system order, known relative degree, known high frequency gain sign) and for unknown exosystems (with unknown order, uncertain frequencies). On the basis of a known bound on system uncertainties and a known bound on the modeled exosystem frequencies, a new adaptive output error feedback control algorithm is proposed which guarantees exponential convergence of both the output and the control input errors into residual bounds which decrease as the exosystem modeling error decreases. Exponential convergence of both errors to zero is obtained when the regulator exactly models all exosystem excited frequencies, while asymptotic convergence of both errors to zero is achieved when the actual exosystem is overmodeled by the regulator. The new algorithm generalizes existing learning controllers since, in the case of periodic references and/or disturbances, the knowledge of the period is not required. 相似文献
After solvent extraction of Taiheiyo, Miike and Balmer coals using wash oil under nitrogen atmosphere at 370 °C for 30 min, the extraction yield is always within the additivity law. Further studies used Yallourn, Soyakoishi, Taiheiyo, Horonai, Miike, Shin Yubari, Balmer coals and their blends which were hydrogenated in tetralin, wash oil or creosote oil, with or without catalyst, at 400–450 °C under 10 or 3 MPa of initial hydrogen pressure. When hydrogen is available, the additivity law exists for blended coals, but when the hydrogen supply is deficient, the experimental conversion of blended coals is always lower than calculated conversions. This may be due to the faster consumption of the hydrogen by more reactive coals and thus the less reactive coals were unable to react with hydrogen. 相似文献
The tracking problem is considered for robots having flexible joints. We propose a state feedback control algorithm which guarantees arbitrary attenuation on the outputs of the effects of time-varying disturbances as well as of parameter uncertainties. The toxicity of four xenobiotic compounds 3,5-dichlorophenol, formaldehyde, 4-nitrophenol and dichloromethane, representative of industrial wastewater contaminants was evaluated by a simple respirometric procedure set up on the basis of OECD Method 209 and by the Microtox bioassay. Very good reproducibility was observed for both methods, the variation coefficients being in the range of 2-10% for the respirometric procedure and 6-15% for Microtox, values that can be considered very good for a biological method. Comparison of EC(50) data obtained with the two methods shows that in both cases 3,5-dichlorophenol is more toxic than other compounds investigated and dichloromethane has a very low toxicity value. Intermediate EC(50) values were found for the two other chemicals, formaldehyde and 4-nitrophenol. Moreover, the Microtox EC(50) values are generally lower (except for dichloromethane) than the respirometric ones: these differences could be explained by the fact that the Microtox method uses a pure culture of marine species and, therefore, should not necessarily be expected to behave like a community of activated sludge bacteria. In conclusion, both methods can be usefully applied for toxicity detection in wastewater treatment plants but it is advisable to take into account that Microtox is more sensitive than respirometry in estimating the acute toxicity effect on the biomass operating in the plant. 相似文献
The aim of our meta-analysis is to evaluate the association between the modifications of the cardiovascular system and chronic exposure to noise in occupationally exposed subjects.We considered the articles published from 1950 to May 2008. Only 15 papers were conforming to the inclusion criteria identified for this meta-analysis. A total of 18,658 workers were divided in three groups according to the level of noise exposure as measured in the original studies (High Exposure, HE, Intermediate Exposure, IE, Low Exposure, LE). A preliminary evaluation of the type of data allowed for a classification of the type of performed measurements. Two classes of variables were identified: Class I, composed by continuous variables (systolic blood pressure, SBP, diastolic blood pressure, DBP, and heart rate, HR) and Class II, composed by not continuous variables (prevalence of hypertension and prevalence of ECG abnormalities). For each variable the calculation of heterogeneity was performed. For continuous variables the calculation of ES and its significance were performed while Odds Ratio (OR) and its significance were calculated for not continuous variables.The results show a statistically significant increase of SBP and DBP in HE workers compared to LE and IE workers while HR is statistically higher in HE participants compared to LE participants. The prevalence of both hypertension and ECG abnormalities is statistically higher in HE workers compared to LE and IE workers.Taking into account both the extremely high heterogeneity among studies and the ES/OR values we suggest a particular attention to the measurement and evaluation of SBP, DBP and HR in workers with chronic exposure to noise. Also ECG for workers with chronic exposure to noise is suggested in order to identify and evaluate possible abnormalities noise could be a concurrent cause of. 相似文献
