The Deep-Space Network (DSN) includes world-wide networks of 26-, 34- and 70-m antennas in Australia, Spain, and the USA. Ruby masers are used on the 34and 70-m antennas to maximize the system operating noise temperature and thereby maximize the DSN receiving system figure of merit, antenna gain divided by system operating noise temperature. These systems are used for deep-space telecommunications, solar system radar, and radio astronomy. Cavity, traveling-wave, and reflected-wave maser designs and performance characteristics from 960 MHz to 34 GHz are summarized. Effective noise temperatures of ruby masers are addressed with emphasis on a 33.68-GHz maser where quantum noise is a major source of noise  相似文献

Ethnic differences in obesity-related disease prevalence may relate to differences in fat distribution or metabolism. We conducted a study in 73 African American and white children to examine the relation between fat distribution and insulin and to determine whether ethnic differences in fat distribution or in adiposity-insulin relations contribute to differences in insulin concentrations. Fasting and postchallenge insulin concentrations were determined by oral-glucose-tolerance test, total body fat by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and subcutaneous abdominal (SAAT) and intraabdominal (IAAT) adipose tissue by computerized tomography. African Americans had greater fasting insulin (x +/- SD: 79 +/- 37 compared with 55 +/- 23 pmol/L, P < 0.01), incremental 30-min insulin (567 +/- 438 compared with 300 +/- 304 pmol/L, P < 0.001), and incremental area under the insulin curve (AUC; 262 +/- 209 compared with 164 +/- 156 pmol/L, P < 0.01). In multiple linear regression, fasting insulin was independently related to total fat within both ethnic groups (model R2 = 0.42 and 0.52 for African Americans and whites, respectively), incremental 30-min insulin to total fat and IAAT in whites only (model R2 = 0.71), and AUC to SAAT in African Americans only (model R2 = 0.49). Adjusting insulin indexes for adiposity did not eliminate the significant effect of ethnicity. In general, relations between adiposity and insulin were stronger in whites than in African Americans. African American children had higher insulin concentrations than white children after total body fat, IAAT, and SAAT were controlled for. However, strong relations between adiposity (total and abdominal) and insulin in both groups suggest that obesity may contribute to disease risk regardless of ethnicity.  相似文献

We hypothesized that residents of Woburn, Massachusetts, had been exposed to as much as 70 microg/l of arsenic (As) and 240 microg/l of chromium (Cr) in drinking water from municipal supply wells G and H. To test this hypothesis, we measured the concentrations of As and Cr in 82 hair samples donated by 56 Woburn residents. Thirty-six samples were cut between 1964 and 1979, the period during which wells G and H were in operation. The remainder were cut either before 1964 (1938-1963; n = 26) or after 1979 (1982-1994; n = 20). Washed hair samples were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation. Exposure to the well water--measured as access--was estimated using well pumping records and a model of the Woburn water distribution system. Our results show that access to wells G and H water was not significantly correlated (95% confidence interval) with As and Cr concentrations measured in the hair of Woburn residents, but As concentrations have declined significantly over the last half century. Linear regression of As concentrations (micrograms per gram) upon year of hair cut and access to wells G and H water yielded a standard coefficient for year of -0. 0074 +/- 0.0017 (standard error; p = 2.5 -multiple- 10(-5)) and -0.12 +/- 0.10 (p = 0.22) for access. The r2 value for the model was 0.19. The geometric mean concentrations (geometric standard deviation) of As and Cr in the hair of residents who had access (i.e., relative access estimate >0) to wells G and H water (n = 27) were 0.14 (2.6) and 2.29 (1.8) microg/g, respectively; the geometric mean concentrations of As and Cr in all of the hair samples from residents who did not have access (1938-1994; n = 55) were 0.13 (3.0) and 2.19 (2.0) microg/g, respectively.  相似文献

A new formulation for solving the three dimensional eddy current problem was introduced at the last COMPUMAG meeting [1], which promised to be an optimal solution in terms of the number of degrees of freedom required. A package CARMEN has since been developed based on that formulation, and results for some test cases are presented, giving an indication of the possible applications of the package. A study of possible methodologies that could further reduce the number of degrees of freedom required in conducting regions is also included, with details of one such formulation.  相似文献

A research effort was made to evaluate the usefulness of modern thermodynamic and diffusion computational tools, Thermo-Calc and Dictra (Thermo_Calc Software, Inc., McMurray, PA), in optimizing the parameters for diffusion welding of Alloy 800H. This would achieve a substantial reduction in the overall number of experiments required to achieve optimal welding and post-weld heat treatment conditions. This problem is important because diffusion-welded components of Alloy 800H are being evaluated for use in assembling compact, micro-channel heat exchangers that are being proposed in the design of a high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor by the U.S. Department of Energy. The modeling was done in close contact with experimental work. The latter included using the Gleeble 3500 System (Dynamic Systems, Inc., Poestenkill, NY) for welding simulation, mechanical property measurement, and light optical and scanning electron microscopy. The modeling efforts suggested a temperature of 1423 K (1150 °C) for 1 hour with an applied pressure of 5 MPa using a 15-μm Ni foil as joint filler to reduce chromium oxidation on the welded surfaces. Good agreement between modeled and experimentally determined concentration gradients was achieved, and model refinements to account for the complexity of actual alloy materials are suggested.  相似文献

A total of 208 strains of Aeromonas were isolated by monthly sampling from two estuaries (one provided with, and the other devoid of a waste-water treatment system) on the Italian coast of the Adriatic sea between September 1994 and August 1995. Biotyping at the species level allowed the identification of 96 strains (46%) as Aer. caviae, 46 (22%) as Aer. sobria, 33 (16%) as Aer. hydrophila and 25 (12%) as Aer. veronii. Eight strains (4%) were regarded as unnamed aeromonads. Aeromonas caviae was the most prevalent species in water with a high degree of pollution, while Aer. hydrophila strains were more commonly isolated from cleaner water. Aeromonas sobria and Aer. veronii were equally distributed in both estuaries. There was no correlation between temperature and numbers of aeromonads in either estuary. Using a biochemical fingerprinting method, strains were divided into similarity groups (PhP-types) based on their biochemical phenotypes. Several different PhP-types were found in each estuary, yielding a high diversity for these strains. However, some identical PhP-types were also found in both estuaries and at different times of the year, indicating that certain Aeromonas strains can survive more widely varying physico-chemical conditions. The production of toxins capable of causing cytoskeletal-dependent changes in the morphology of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells was detected in 14 strains and appeared to be dependent on the season.  相似文献

Non-destructive uniaxial load tests were performed on glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardium at two different temperatures. Samples were tested first in isotonic saline at room temperature and then stored overnight in buffered glutaraldehyde. This allowed the tissue to recover from the test. The following day after all memory of the previous test had faded, the procedure was repeated on the same samples and continued for five consecutive days. Mean response curves to load were constructed. The temperature of the saline test medium was raised to body temperature at 37° C. An identical series of tests over five consecutive days on the same samples was repeated at this temperature. Mean response curves were computed. Analysis of variance demonstrated no statistically significant difference in the response to load of the tissue at the two temperatures. Hence, it appears that the temperature is not an important parameter in the mechanical and accelerated fatigue tests of pericardial heart valve substitutes.  相似文献

Participants in a November 1991 workshop concluded that coordinated strategies for controlling malnutrition due to iodine, iron, vitamin A and other micronutrients deficiencies are technically feasible and should be given consideration in planning control efforts. Coordinated surveys involving clinical, biochemical and dietary assessment of multiple micronutrients are feasible. Multiple fortification is also possible using such vehicles as salt, processed rice or sugar. Supplementation efforts can be integrated with existing health care programs. Food-based strategies are also effective. The best examples have been community-based and have included a strong nutrition and health education component designed to change food consumption patterns, improve food preservation and preparation practices, and link income-generating activities with food production activities. Successful coordinated efforts will require a strong political commitment and a supportive infrastructure. Specific recommendations include the formation of national coordinating bodies for micronutrient deficiency control, establishment of a micronutrient information network and expansion of technical exchange and training.  相似文献
