The study evaluated the efficiency of two heat dissipation strategies under simulated desert patrol missions. Ten men participated in four trials, during which they walked on a treadmill (45°C, 20% relative humidity), carrying a load of 35 kg; two 50-min walks were separated by a 20-min rest. Cooling strategies, provided by an ambient air-ventilated vest (active cooling condition, AC), or water spraying of the skin during the rest (passive cooling condition, PC), in addition to reduced clothing and open zippers, were compared to conditions with full protective (FP) clothing and naked condition (NC). Skin temperature was higher during NC (37.9 ± 0.4°C; p < 0.001), and rectal temperature and heart rate were higher during FP (38.6 ± 0.4°C, p < 0.001 and 145 ± 12, p < 0.001, respectively), compared to other conditions. Four subjects terminated the trial prematurely due to signs of heat exhaustion in FP. Both cooling strategies substantially improved evaporative cooling.  相似文献

Switchable windows are being installed into modern buildings. We report on how the variable transmittance of gasochromic and electrochromic switchable windows changes the color rendering properties of the daylight passing through these windows. We present a series of color rendering examples. Correlated color temperature and color rendering indices are insufficient to describe the color properties of this filtered light, as these indices are beyond the applicability limits. We obtain more reliable results using the color shifts (deltaE) of different objects. We find that as the transmittance of the window changes, each surface color moves along a path of the CIELAB space in the same direction for both switchable units. The direction and distance moved differs among test-color samples. The appearance of an array of colored objects is strongly distorted at higher coloration states of the windows.  相似文献

Bone marrow stromal cells are required for sustained haemopoiesis. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is a multifunctional cytokine present in the bone marrow microenvironment which regulates the expression of several cytokines, cytokine receptors and cell adhesion elements. The TGF-beta receptors type I and II, and endoglin, mediate TGF-beta1 binding to the membrane of human bone marrow stromal cells. [125I]TGF-beta1-affinity labelling experiments showed that three different anti-endoglin monoclonal antibodies co-immunoprecipitated a 68 kD TGF-beta1-labelled polypeptide together with TGF-beta1/endoglin complexes. Here, we have shown that the 68 kD receptor corresponds to the type I receptor, indicating that endoglin and the type I receptor associate on the membrane of these cells upon ligand binding. The expression of endoglin by stromal cells was found to be up-regulated by TGF-beta1, but not by IL-1beta. The association of endoglin with signalling components of the TGF-beta receptor system on the membrane of bone marrow stromal cells might modulate TGF-beta1 access to the signalling pathways, and therefore it could regulate TGF-beta1-mediated stromal cellular responses.  相似文献

The tumour microenvironment regulates tumour progression and the spread of cancer in the body. Targeting the stromal cells that surround cancer cells could, therefore, improve the effectiveness of existing cancer treatments. Here, we show that magnetic nanoparticle clusters encapsulated inside a liposome can, under the influence of an external magnet, target both the tumour and its microenvironment. We use the outstanding T2 contrast properties (r2=573-1,286 s(-1) mM(-1)) of these ferri-liposomes, which are ~95 nm in diameter, to non-invasively monitor drug delivery in vivo. We also visualize the targeting of the tumour microenvironment by the drug-loaded ferri-liposomes and the uptake of a model probe by cells. Furthermore, we used the ferri-liposomes to deliver a cathepsin protease inhibitor to a mammary tumour and its microenvironment in a mouse, which substantially reduced the size of the tumour compared with systemic delivery of the same drug.  相似文献

Cell-to-cell junction structures play a key role in cell growth rate control and cell polarization. In endothelial cells (EC), these structures are also involved in regulation of vascular permeability and leukocyte extravasation. To identify novel components in EC intercellular junctions, mAbs against these cells were produced and selected using a morphological screening by immunofluorescence microscopy. Two novel mAbs, LIA1/1 and VJ1/16, specifically recognized a 25-kD protein that was selectively localized at cell-cell junctions of EC, both in the primary formation of cell monolayers and when EC reorganized in the process of wound healing. This antigen corresponded to the recently cloned platelet-endothelial tetraspan antigen CD151/PETA-3 (platelet-endothelial tetraspan antigen-3), and was consistently detected at EC cell-cell contact sites. In addition to CD151/PETA-3, two other members of the tetraspan superfamily, CD9 and CD81/ TAPA-1 (target of antiproliferative antibody-1), localized at endothelial cell-to-cell junctions. Biochemical analysis demonstrated molecular associations among tetraspan molecules themselves and those of CD151/ PETA-3 and CD9 with alpha3 beta1 integrin. Interestingly, mAbs directed to both CD151/PETA-3 and CD81/ TAPA-1 as well as mAb specific for alpha3 integrin, were able to inhibit the migration of ECs in the process of wound healing. The engagement of CD151/PETA-3 and CD81/TAPA-1 inhibited the movement of individual ECs, as determined by quantitative time-lapse video microscopy studies. Furthermore, mAbs against the CD151/PETA-3 molecule diminished the rate of EC invasion into collagen gels. In addition, these mAbs were able to increase the adhesion of EC to extracellular matrix proteins. Together these results indicate that CD81/TAPA-1 and CD151/PETA-3 tetraspan molecules are components of the endothelial lateral junctions implicated in the regulation of cell motility, either directly or by modulation of the function of the associated integrin heterodimers.  相似文献
