Many media processing applications create a load that varies significantly over time. Hence, if such an application is assigned a lower processing-time budget than needed in its worst-case load situation, deadline misses are likely to occur. This problem can be dealt with by designing media processing applications in a scalable fashion. A scalable media processing application can run in multiple qualities, leading to correspondingly different resource demands. The problem we consider is to find an accompanying quality control strategy, which minimizes both the number of deadline misses and the number of quality changes, while maximizing the quality of processing. We present an initial approach to the above problem by modeling it as a Markov decision process (MDP). Our model is based on measuring relative progress at milestones. Solving the MDP results in a quality control strategy that can be applied during runtime with only little overhead. We evaluate our approach by means of a practical example, which concerns a scalable MPEG-2 decoder.  相似文献

We have performed numerical calculations of the noise in voltage-biased superconducting transition edge-based X-ray microcalorimeters, using a finite-element model. Details of the model are discussed, as well as results for different absorber geometries. The results are in agreement with an analytical model and show that the amount of internal thermal fluctuation noise can be reduced by using a segmented absorber. The simulation also agrees well with experimental data, which, for our detectors, contain no major unidentified noise sources. Furthermore, the discrepancy between the (small-signal) theoretical and the measured energy resolutions for 5.9 keV X-rays, for our sensors typically a factor of 2, is explained by a more accurate modelling of the sensor responsivity, taking into account the large signal behaviour.  相似文献

This note addresses the output feedback stabilization problem of a chain of integrators using multiple delays. We shall prove that either n distinct delays or a proportional+delay compensator with n-1 distinct delays are sufficient to stabilize a chain including n integrators. We present two different approaches. Both are constructive and rely on frequency-domain techniques: on a derivative feedback approximation idea, and a pole placement idea, respectively. Here, we report on the application of corroles as analytically active compounds in liquid membrane electrodes (ISE) that are sensitive towards salicylic acid and salicylate.The potentiometric signals generated by corrole-incorporated ISEs strongly depend on the pH of the aqueous sample solution and the membrane composition, such as the presence of lipophilic sites. Corrole incorporating ISEs are characterised by a low detection limit (4.0 × 10−5 M) and a wide linear range (4.0 × 10−5 to 5.3 × 10−3 M). Also, they are free from interference versus other organic anions.The mechanism of the generation of the potentiometric signals of corrole incorporating ISEs in the presence of salicylate anion, as well salicylic acid, will be discussed.  相似文献

Results from this laboratory have shown that bone metabolism is directly related to extracellular pH and that high concentrations of tobramycin released from impregnated polymethylmethacryrate (PMMA) beads has pH-dependent toxic effects on bone. In the present study, beneficial effects of calcium hydroxide-impregnated PMMA were investigated regarding tobramycin toxicity and bone metabolism in chick embryo tibiae in vitro. Also using Ca(OH)2 as a pH regulator, the antibiotic efficacy of tobramycin-impregnated PMMA was evaluated with respect to inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus growth. When Ca(OH)2 was added to PMMA beads containing tobramycin, the beads released hydroxyl and calcium ions into the culture medium and released more antibiotic than beads containing only tobramycin. Bone metabolism (glycolysis, total protein synthesis, and collagen synthesis) was enhanced by Ca(OH)2-impregnated beads with or without tobramycin. Additionally, bacterial growth was inhibited more strongly when S. aureus was incubated with tobramycin- and Ca(OH)2-impregnated PMMA disks than with disks containing only tobramycin. This study demonstrates the feasibility of adding Ca(OH)2 to tobramycin-impregnated PMMA beads as a regulator of local pH and a promoter of bone metabolism for protection of bone when high concentrations of tobramycin are used to treat osteomyelitis. It also suggests that lower concentrations of antibiotic may be effective if Ca(OH)2 and tobramycin are administered simultaneously.  相似文献

The use of computer models offers a general and flexible framework that can help to deal with some of the complexities and difficulties associated with the development of water management plans as prescribed by the Water Framework Directive. However, despite the advantages modelling presents, the integration of information derived from models into policy is far away from being trivial or the norm. Part of the difficulties of this integration is rooted in the lack of confidence policy makers have on the incorporation of modelling information into policy formulation. In this paper we examine the reasons for this apparent lack of confidence and explore how some tools, presently in use, address this problem. We conclude that public confidence in models is highly dependent on the way uncertainties are addressed and suggest possible directions of action to improve the current situation. Four real case studies illustrate how computer models have been used in The Netherlands for carrying out management plans at regional and national scale. We suggest that the solution to integrate modelling information into policy formulation lies on both the modelling and the policy-making communities.  相似文献

Concurrent and reactive programs are specified by their behaviours in the presence of a nondeterministic environment. In a natural way, this gives a specification (ARW) of an atomic variable in the style of Abadi and Lamport. Several implementations of atomic variables by lower level primitives are known. A few years ago, we formulated a criterion to prove the correctness of such implementations. The proof of correctness of the criterion itself was based on Lynch’s definition of atomicity by serialization points. Here, this criterion is reformulated as a specification HRW in the formal sense. Simulations from HRW to ARW and vice versa are constructed. These now serve as a constructive proof of correctness of the criterion. Eternity variables are used in the simulation from HRW to ARW. We propose so-called gliding simulations to deal with the problems that appear when occasionally the concrete implementation needs fewer steps than the abstract specification.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: There is substantial evidence demonstrating the aggravating effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on the progression of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. There is however, little data on the affect of certain factors which could affect liver pathology findings in patients with concomitant HIV infection such as the duration of HIV infection or T-cell subpopulation counts. We examined pathology findings in patients with concomitant HIV and HCV infections to determine the impact of immunodepression. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed liver pathology data collected in patients with concomitant HIV and HCV infections grouping patients according to severity of the liver pathology: group 1 = cirrhosis or active hepatitis; group 2 = minimally active hepatitis or histologically normal liver. Transparietal liver biopsies were obtained for the work-up of viral hepatitis or because of long-term unexplained fever or suspected lymphoma. Epidemiological and biological data were obtained from medical files. The duration of the liver disease was estimated from the date of exposure to risk of immunodepression as determined by the peripheral CD4+ and CD8+ counts. All pathology specimens were read by two pathologists who established the Knodell score for each patient. RESULTS: Fifty patients were included: 23 were classed in group 1 and 28 in group 2. The Knodell score was significantly different between the two groups, 11 +/- 4 and 4 +/- 3 respectively (p < 0.0001). Disease duration was similar for the two groups: mean 8 years. Mean CD4+ count was significantly higher in group 1: 312/mm3 versus 110/mm3 for group 2 (p = 0.0057); as was the mean CD8+ count (758/mm3 versus 360/mm3, p = 0.0013). For the entire study population, there was a significantly negative correlation (p < 0.05) between the Knodell score and the CD4+ count (r = 0.31) and for the CD8+ count (r = 0.41). CONCLUSION: HCV-related liver pathology in patients co-infected with HIV depends on the level of immunodepression. CD8+ counts are better correlated with pathology findings than with CD4+ counts.  相似文献

(E)-[2-(4-(Dimethylamino)phenyl)vinyl]benzenes bearing a nitrile or carboxyl group in the 2', 3', or 4' position were synthesized and tested for substrate activity with purified pig liver flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO1). Although the nitrile derivatives were too insoluble to saturate the catalytic site at pH 7.4, they appeared to be substrates with K(m)'s somewhat above their maximum solubility (approximately equal to 0.1 mM) in the assay medium. Of the three carboxylic acid analogs, (E)-4-[2-(4(dimethylamino)phenyl)vinyl]benzoic acid had no detectable water solubility at pH 7.4, and measurements were restricted to (E)-3-[2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)vinyl]benzoic acid (DS3CO) and (E)-2-[2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)vinyl]benzoic acid (DS2CO). While DS3CO and DS2CO were substrates, they also inhibited FMO1 turnover. DS3CO was the more effective inhibitor, and at 2 mM it inhibited FMO1 and microsomal-catalyzed oxidation of methimazole (N-methyl-2-mercaptoimidazole) by 80-90%. Kinetic studies indicated that the aminostilbene carboxylates were noncompetitive with both the xenobiotic substrate, methimazole, and NADPH. However, inhibition constants calculated from double reciprocal plots of velocity vs NADPH were K(i)(comp) 130 and 150 microM for DS3CO and DS2CO, respectively, whereas the uncompetitive Ki's were 10-15 times higher, which suggests that inhibition of NADPH binding may be primarily responsible for inhibition of FMO1 by the aminostilbene carboxylates. This model is also consistent with inhibition of cyclohexanone monooxygenase, a bacterial analog of FMO. DS3CO and DS2CO were again noncompetitive with methimazole but primarily competitive with NADPH. The aminostilbene carboxylates had no detectable effects on activity of pig or rat liver NADPH-cytochrome P450 reductase, which suggests that they are not nonspecific flavoprotein antagonists.  相似文献
