We examined the effect of the pineal neurohormone melatonin (MLT) on protection from viral encephalitis. The antiviral activity of MLT was evaluated in normal mice inoculated with Semliki Forest virus (SFV) and in stressed mice injected with the attenuated non-invasive West Nile virus (WN-25). Administration of MLT (s.c.) daily from 3 days before through 10 days after virus inoculation reduced viremia and significantly postponed the onset of disease and death by 7 to 10 days. Moreover, MLT injection reduced mortality of SFV (10 PFU) inoculated mice from 100% to 44%. In mice inoculated with high dose of SFV (100 PFU), MLT postponed death and reduced mortality by 20%. In all of the surviving mice anti-SFV antibodies were detected 22 days after virus inoculation. Infection of mice stressed by either isolation or dexamethasone injection with WN-25 induced mortality of 75% and 50% respectively, which was reduced by MLT administration to 31% and 25%, respectively. The efficiency of MLT in protecting from lethal viral infections warrants further investigations on its mechanisms of action.  相似文献

Worksite health promotion is seldom offered to workers who are low-educated and multi-ethnic, possibly due to an assumption that they are more reluctant to participate. Furthermore, little has been done to promote health at female-dominated workplaces. The main aim of this study was to investigate differences in participation among immigrant and Danish cleaners throughout a 1-year randomised controlled study tailored to cleaners and carried out in predominantly female workplaces. No significant differences in ethnicity were found in consent and participation throughout the 1-year intervention. Dropout was equally distributed among Danish and immigrant cleaners. This study indicates that a worksite health promotion intervention among a female-dominated, high-risk occupation such as cleaning can be equally appealing for Danes and immigrants. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: This study provides insight about participation of Danish and immigrant cleaners in a worksite health promotion intervention in a predominantly female occupation. For attaining high participation and low dropout in future worksite health promotion interventions among cleaners, the intervention ought to not only target the ethnic background of the workers, but also to be specifically tailored to the job group.  相似文献

This study evaluates the implementation of physical coordination training (PCT) and cognitive behavioural training (CBTr) interventions in a randomised controlled trial at nine cleaners' workplaces. Female cleaners (n = 294) were randomised into a PCT, a CBTr or a reference (REF) group. Both 12-week interventions were performed in groups guided by an instructor. Records were kept on intervention dose (adherence) unanticipated events at the work place (context) and quality of intervention delivery (fidelity). Participant adherence was 37% in the PCT and 49% in the CBTr interventions. Optimal implementation was reached by only 6% in PCT and 42% in the CBTr. Analysis of the barriers to successful implementation indicated that the intervention process is sensitive to unanticipated events. In order to succeed in improving the health of high-risk populations such as cleaners and to correctly interpret intervention effects, more research on implementation is needed. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: Both physical coordination training and cognitive behavioural training are potential effective workplace interventions among low educated job groups with high physical work demands. However, thorough consideration should be given to feasibility in the design of interventions. The optimal intervention should be tailored to closely match the implementation context and be robust and flexible to minimise susceptibility to changes in work organisation.  相似文献

During physically heavy work tasks the musculoskeletal tissues are exposed to both mechanical and metabolic loading. The aim of the present study was to test a biomechanical model for prediction of whole-body energy turnover from kinematic and anthropometric data during load carrying. Total loads of 0, 10 and 20 kg were carried symmetrically or asymmetrically in the hands, while walking on a treadmill (4.5 km h(-1)) horizontally, uphill, or downhill the slopes being 8%. Mean values for the directly measured oxygen uptake ranged for all trials from 0.5 to 2.1 l O2 min(-1), and analysis of variance showed significant differences regarding slope, load carried, and symmetry. The calculated values of oxygen uptake based on the biomechanical model correlated significantly with the directly measured values, fitting to the line Y = 0.990 X + 0.144, where Y is the estimated and X is the measured oxygen uptake in l min(-1). The close relationship between energy turnover rate measured directly and estimated based on a biomechanical model justifies the assessment of the metabolic load from kinematic data.  相似文献

Through computational analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) traces we find correlations between secondary metabolites and growth conditions of six varieties of barley. Using artificial neural networks, it was possible to classify chromatograms for which the varieties were fertilized by nitrogen and treated by fungicide. For each variety of barley we could also differentiate it from the others. Surprisingly, all these classification tasks could be solved successfully by a simple network with no hidden units. When adding to the methodology pruning of the network weights, we were able to reduce the set of peaks in the chromatograms and obtain a necessary subset from which the growth conditions and differentiation may be decided. In some instances, more complex networks with hidden units could lead to a further reduction of the number of peaks used. In most cases, far more than half of the peaks are redundant. We find that it requires fewer information-rich peaks to perform the variety differentiation tasks than to recognize any of the growth conditions. Analysis of the network weights reveals correlations between weighted combinations of peaks.  相似文献

Over a two week period (1994) the 27 physicians at Fjorden registered the time they used on direct and indirect treatment of in- and out-patients, administration, further training, supervision and research. Standardized criteria for the time spent on patient treatment were set up. Thirty-two percent of the total work time was used for direct treatment and a further 32% for indirect treatment (conferences, etc.) while the rest was used for other purposes. In relation to standardized 60 minutes or more treatment sessions, the survey revealed an average of 32-60% insufficient time spent on each patient per session. Fifty percent more physician time for direct treatment would be necessary to reach the standardized criteria for the total number of patients. We conclude that using 2/3 of the total work time available on treatment is acceptable. The great discrepancy between real and ideal use of physician time makes it important to further examine how to acknowledge dialogue as a psychiatric tool.  相似文献

Ten healthy humans were exposed to combinations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and air temperature (0 mg/m3 and 10 mg/m3 of a mixture of 22 volatile organic compounds and 18, 22 and 26° C). Previously demonstrated effects of VOCs and thermal exposures were replicated. For the first time nasal cross-sectional areas and nasal volumes, as measured by acoustic rhinometry, were shown to decrease with decreasing temperature and increasing VOC exposure. Temperature and pollutant exposures affected air quality, the need for more ventilation, skin humidity on the forehead, sweating, acute sensory irritation and possibly watering eyes in an additive way. Interactions were found for odor intensity (p = 0.1), perceived facial skin temperature and dryness, general well-being, tear film stability, and nasal cavity dimension. The presence of interactions implies that in the future guidelines for acceptable indoor air concentrations of VOCs should depend on room air temperature.  相似文献

Effect of cattle manure on selenate and selenite retention in soil   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of manure on retention of selenium (Se) in soil. Addition of cattle manure in combination with selenite and selenate reduced the adsorption of both anions to a loam soil in a batch experiment. The results were explained by the content of low-molecular-weight organic acids in the manure which compete with Se for the sorption sites. In a pot experiment with loam and peat soils and with two pH levels within each soil, cattle slurry added together with selenate was found to increase the Se concentration in grain at the highest pH level (6.1 and 6.8 for the loam and peat, respectively). At a lower pH (5.4 and 6.0 for the loam and peat, respectively) there was no significant effect of slurry on Se concentration in grain. Application of slurry also increased the residual effect of Se applied to the loam soil in the preceding growing season. In the peat soil, no residual effect of Se was found either with or without the addition of slurry.  相似文献
