A transformational approach for proving termination of parallel logic programs such as GHC programs is proposed. A transformation
from GHC programs to term rewriting systems is developed; it exploits the fact that unifications in GHC-resolution correspond
to matchings. The termination of a GHC program for a class of queries is implied by the termination of the resulting rewrite
system. This approach facilitates the applicability of a wide range of termination techniques developed for rewrite systems
in proving termination of GHC programs. The method consists of three steps: (a) deriving moding information from a given GHC
program, (b) transforming the GHC program into a term rewriting system using the moding information, and finally (c) proving
termination of the resulting rewrite system. Using this method, the termination of many benchmark GHC programs such as quick-sort,
merge-sort, merge, split, fair-split and append, etc., can be proved.

M. R. K. Krishna Rao, Ph.D.: He currently works as a senior research fellow at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. His current interests are in
the areas of logic programming, modular aspects and noncopying implementations of term rewriting, learning logic programs
from examples and conuterexamples and dynamics of mental states in rational agent architectures. He received his Ph.D in computer
science from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay in 1993 and worked at TIFR and Max Planck Institut für
Informatik, Saarbrücken until January 1997.
Deepak Kapur, Ph.D.: He currently works as a professor at the State University of New York at Albany. His research interests are in the areas
of automated reasoning, term rewriting, constraint solving, algebraic and geometric reasoning and its applications in computer
vision, symbolic computation, formal methods, specification and verification. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from
MIT in 1980. He worked at General Electric Corporate Research and Development until 1987. Prof. Kapur is the editor-in-chief
of the Journal of Automated Reasoning. He also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Logic Programming, Journal on
Constraints, and Journal of Applicable Algebra in Engineering, Communication and Computer Science.
R. K. Shyamasundar, Ph.D.: He currently works as a professor at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay. His current intersts are in
the areas of logic programming, reactive and real time programming, constraint solving, formal methods, specification and
verification. He received his Ph.D in computer science from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1975 and has been a
faculty member at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research since then. He has been a visiting/regular faculty member at Technological
University of Eindhoven, University of Utrecht, IBM TJ Watson Research Centre, Pennsylvania State University, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, INRIA and ENSMP, France. He has served on (and chaired) Program Committees of many International

The saturation capacity of n-alkanes in CHA, AFX and ERI zeolites, that consist of cages separated by windows, decreases with increasing carbon number. The major aim of the present communication is to demonstrate the possibility of separating n-alkane mixtures relying on differences in saturation capacities. To investigate this possibility, Configurational-Bias Monte Carlo simulations for adsorption of C3–nC6, nC4–nC6, and nC5–nC6 mixtures in CHA, AFX and ERI were carried out for equimolar bulk fluid phase. These mixture simulations show that for operation at fluid phase fugacities below about 1 MPa, the adsorbed phase in equilibrium with the bulk vapor phase is predominantly the alkane with the longer chain length, i.e. nC6. However, for operation at pressures in excess of 1 MPa, the adsorbed phase in equilibrium with the bulk liquid phase is richer in the component with the smaller chain length. We recently reported that epidermal immunization using the PowderJet particle delivery device with plasmid vector pcDNA1/EDIM6 encoding rotavirus VP6 of murine strain EDIM induced high levels of serum rotavirus IgG but failed to protect mice against EDIM infection (Choi, A. H., Knowlton, D. R., McNeal, M. M., and Ward, R. L. (1997) Virology 232, 129-138.). This was extended to determine whether pcDNA1/EDIM4 or pcDNA1/EDIM7, which encode either rotavirus VP4 or VP7, the rotavirus neutralization proteins, could also induce rotavirus-specific antibody responses and if these responses resulted in protection. Titers of rotavirus serum IgG increased with the first dose in mice immunized with pcDNA1/EDIM7, but little or no serum rotavirus IgG was detected in mice immunized with pcDNA1/EDIM4. In vitro assays with these plasmids in rabbit reticulocyte lysates showed that VP4 was expressed but the amount was considerably lower than VP6 or VP7. To improve expression of VP4 and induction of rotavirus-specific humoral responses, the coding region of VP4 was cloned into the high-expression plasmid WRG7054 as a fusion protein containing the 22-amino-acid secretory signal peptide of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) at its N terminus. In vitro expression of tPA::VP4 was significantly higher than unmodified VP4, and mice inoculated with WRG7054/EDIM4 generated high titers of rotavirus IgG. The coding sequence of VP7 without the first 162 nucleotides was also cloned into WRG7054, but no difference was observed between titers of serum rotavirus IgG in mice immunized with this plasmid (WRG7054/EDIM7Delta1-162) and pcDNA1/EDIM7. The rotavirus-specific IgG titers in all immune sera were predominantly IgG1 indicating induction of Th 2-type responses. None of the mice immunized with any of the VP4 or VP7 plasmids developed serum or fecal rotavirus IgA or neutralizing antibody to EDIM. When immunized mice were challenged with EDIM virus, there was no significant reduction in viral shedding relative to unimmunized controls. Therefore epidermal immunization with VP4 or VP7 alone elicited rotavirus IgG responses but did not protect against homologous rotavirus challenge. 相似文献

Cajanus trypsin inhibitor (CTI) and Cajanus trypsin-chymotrypsin inhibitor (CTCI) previously purified from cv TAT-10 were further characterised. The modification of the inhibitors revealed the presence of lysine at the trypsin reactive site in both CTI and CTCI. Modification of tyrosine at the reactive site of CTCI did not abolish chymotrypsin inhibition suggesting the presence of leucine or phenylalanine as reported in other chymotrypsin inhibitors. CTCI did not contain tryptophan. Dissociation constants for the inhibitors with bovine trypsin were in the region of 0.69 nmol (CTCI) and 0.029 nmol (CTI). Although the protease inhibitors lost their inhibitory activity on exposure to 2-mercaptoethanol they remained attached to the enzyme. The inhibitors were not very effective against the protease from Helicoverpa armigera which is a serious field pest of Cajanus. A new finite element crack growth algorithm has been developed to simulate dynamic fracture. In this algorithm, pseudo elements with very high initial density are placed below the crack plane and the density is reduced to zero in a gradual manner as the crack passes the element. A number of linear elastic and elasto-viscoplastic problems have been carried out to test the new algorithm. The results are compared with some of the existing crack growth models. 相似文献

Nano-crystal embedded PbO-P2O5 glass has been prepared and characterized by XRD and TEM measurements. The ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measured within
the temperature range 80–300 K show significant structure and interesting feature with the presence of nano-crystalline region.
The glass samples were prepared by melt-quench method and nano-crystals of different sizes were produced by heat treatment
of the glasses for different durations of heating. All the processes were carried out at or above glass transition temperature.
A theoretical model that takes account of the effects of thermally activated relaxation, anharmonicity as well as microscopic
elastic inhomogeneities arising out of fluctuations has been successfully applied to interpret the variation of ultrasonic
velocity and attenuation data. An interesting outcome of this application has been to propose a method for the determination
of the size of nano-crystals from the ultrasonic attenuation data. 相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation undertaken to evaluate different purging solutions to enhance the removal of multiple heavy metals, particularly chromium, nickel, and cadmium, from a low buffering clay, specifically kaolin, during electrokinetic remediation. Experiments were conducted on kaolin spiked with Cr(VI), Ni(II), and Cd(II) in concentrations of 1,000, 500, and 250 mg/kg, respectively, which simulate typical electroplating waste contamination. A total of five different tests were performed to investigate the effect of different electrode purging solutions on the electrokinetic remedial efficiency. A constant DC voltage gradient of 1 V/cm was applied for all the tests. The removal of heavy metals from the soil using tap water as the purging solution was very low. When 1 M acetic acid was used as the purging solution in the cathode, the removal of chromium, nickel, and cadmium was increased to 20, 19, and 13%, respectively. Using 0.1 M ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid as the purging solution in the cathode, 83% of the initial Cr was removed; however, the nickel and cadmium removal was very low. A sequentially enhanced electrokinetic remediation approach involving the use of water as a purging solution at both the anode and cathode initially, followed by the use of acetic acid as the cathode purging solution and a NaOH alkaline solution as the anode purging solution was tested. This sequential approach resulted in a maximum removal of chromium, nickel, and cadmium of 68–71, 71–73, and 87–94%, respectively. This study shows that the sequential use of appropriate electrode purging solutions, rather than a single electrode purging solution, is necessary to remediate multiple heavy metals in soils using electrokinetics. 相似文献
