A novel fiber-optic pressure sensor operated at 1300-nm wavelength

In this paper, we discuss a particular topology of a fiber-optic pressure transducer, developed recently at the Laboratory of the Photonics Research Center, University of Quebec en Outaouais. The sensor, which is an extension of our previous polarimetric configuration, was designed to operate using typical telecommunications components at the wavelength of 1300 nm. The pressure sensor is temperature compensated in an innovative way and has no polarizer between the LD and the sensor. The absolute accuracy of this sensor can be less than 1% in a wide range of temperatures, and including all types of metrological errors such as hysteresis and unrepeatability.     

The activity of acid phosphatase and its isoenzymes in patients with food poisonings

Changes in the activity of acid phosphatase (AP) and its isoenzymes (tartrate-insensitive AP and formalin-insensitive AP) were investigated in patients with food poisoning in the course of the disease. The activity of AP and its isoenzymes in the serum started to grow in early convalescence and reached maximum in late convalescence. Total activity of AP in food toxic infections consists primarily of the activity of its platelet fraction. AP activity may serve as an additional criterion to predict vascular platelet involvement of hemostasis.     

Mathematical boundary integral equation analysis of an embedded shell under dynamic excitations

A boundary integral equation method is presented for the analysis of a thin cylindrical shell embedded in an elastic half-space under axisymmetric excitations. By virtue of a set of ring-load Green's functions for the shell and a group of dynamic fundamental solutions for the semi-infinite medium, the structure–medium interaction problem of wave propagation is shown to be reducible to a set of coupled boundary integral equations. Through the analysis of an auxiliary pair of Cauchy integral equations, the singularities of the contact stress distributions arc rendered explicit. With a direct incorporation of such analytical features into the formulation, an effective computational procedure is developed which involves an interpolation of regular functions only. Typical results for the dynamic contact load distributions, displacements, and complex compliance functions are included as illustrations. In addition to furnishing quantities of direct engineering interest, this treatment is apt to be useful as a foundation for further rigorous as well as approximate developments for various related physical problems and boundary integral methods.     

Planar double-layer leaky-wave microstrip antenna

This paper presents a double-layer leaky-wave microstrip antenna that is entirely planar for easy fabrication. The cavity model and the full-wave spectral domain method are used to analyze the proposed structure. The results from these two approaches agree well with experimental data. The planar structure makes the leaky-wave antenna convenient for implementation in a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) environment. Also, due to the flexibility of the microstrip structure, the geometrical shape can be modified for other desirable radiation patterns
