NH3-NO/NO2 SCR for diesel exhausts after treatment: mechanism and modelling of a catalytic converter

We review herein the key mechanistic and kinetic features of the reactions involved in the NH₃-NO/NO₂ SCR system investigated by dynamic reactive experiments over a V-based commercial powdered catalyst, eventually leading to the proposal of an original redox scheme which accounts for stoichiometry, selectivity and intrinsic kinetics of the global SCR process.     

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Soil–Pipe Interaction

Cases of pipeline damage caused by landslides are common in coastal or mountainous regions, where a continuous monitoring/repair activity is planned in order to maintain their serviceability. The analysis of the soil–structure interaction phenomenon can be invoked to improve the planning and design of buried pipelines, to guide monitoring, and to reduce the risk of damage or failure. Two different approaches are considered in this paper: small scale laboratory tests and numerical simulations using the distinct element method (DEM). The experimental setup consists of a box filled with sand and water. Several experiments were performed, in which the diameter and the depth of the tube varied. The numerical simulations are divided in two separate series: in the first, the numerical model is calibrated and its reliability in reproducing the experimental tests is checked; in the second series, the direction of the relative displacement between the tube and the surrounding “numerical soil” varies over the range ±90° with respect to the horizontal. In the latter, both vertical and horizontal components of the drag force are measured and the corresponding interaction diagrams are constructed. The DEM simulations provide useful information about the shape of the failure mechanisms and the force transfer within the soil.

Role of Nitrate Species in the “NO2-SCR” Mechanism over a Commercial Fe-zeolite Catalyst for SCR Mobile Applications

The NO₂-SCR reaction is studied by transient reaction analysis over a Fe-zeolite commercial catalyst. It is proposed that the NO₂-SCR reaction occurs according to a mechanism wherein surface nitrates are first formed by NO₂ disproportionation, followed by their catalytic reduction to nitrogen by ammonia.

Aging is associated with changes in physical characteristics and decline of many physiological functions. The aging process have been described by various theories, in particular the free radical theory of aging has received widespread attention. It has been accepted that the oxidative stress or damage induced by free radicals is related to aging. In this study, we determined the serum concentration of lipid peroxide and antioxidant as biomarker for aging. Healthy subjects were classified into 3 groups, elderly (65-), middle-aged (40-64) and young group (20-39). Findings in the elderly were as follows: 1. Lipid peroxides in the elderly group were significantly higher than those in the young group. 2. Preventive antioxidant concentrations of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and albumin were lower than those in the young group, but ceruloplasmin values increased and catalase activity was unchanged. 3. The total antioxidant capacity of serum was slightly decreased. 4. Superoxide generation by neutrophils while resting was significantly higher in the young group.

How to control the selectivity in the reduction of NOx with H2 over Pt-Ba/Al2O3 Lean NOx Trap catalysts

The reduction process of NO_x species stored over Pt-Ba/Al₂O₃ Lean NO_x Trap systems is analysed in this paper when H₂ is used as a reductant. The effect of different experimental conditions (temperature, reductant concentration, adsorption lengths, etc.) is addressed and discussed in relation to the selectivity and the efficiency of the reduction process.     

Transient kinetic study of the SCR-DeNOx reaction

The unsteady-state kinetics of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH₃ is studied over V₂O₅–WO₃/TiO₂ model catalysts by means of the transient response method. NH₃ strongly adsorbs onto the catalyst surface whereas NO does not adsorb appreciably. A dynamic mathematical model based on a Temkin-type desorption process for NH₃ and a SCR reaction rate with a complex dependence on the ammonia surface coverage is well suited to represent the data.
