Vapor pressure and thermodynamic functions of TeI<Subscript>4</Subscript> and its decomposition products

Using a flow method, we have measured the vapor pressure of tellurium tetraiodide, an attractive reagent for chemical vapor deposition technology. The results, combined with earlier tensimetric data, have been used to evaluate the basic thermodynamic functions of TeI₄ and its thermolysis products.     

New technological solutions to protect the lining of blast-furnace hearths

The use of schungite as a partial replacement for coke is practiced in Russia at a number of metallurgical plants, both in the production of foundry iron (its primary use) and in making conversion pig iron. The largest amount of coke is replaced when foundry iron is being made, the replacement coefficient in this case having a value within the range 0.8–1.3. Studies that included continuous monitoring of the temperature of the carbon blocks in blast furnaces with volumes of 1719, 3200, and 5580 m³ unambiguously demonstrate that the thickness of the slag crust in blast furnaces increases with the use of schungite. Protecting the lining of the hearth through the use of schungite is also accompanied by a decrease in coke consumption. __________ Translated from Metallurg, No. 8, pp. 53–57, August, 2007.

Role of Chiral Configuration in the Photoinduced Interaction of D- and L-Tryptophan with Optical Isomers of Ketoprofen in Linked Systems

The study of the L- and D-amino acid properties in proteins and peptides has attracted considerable attention in recent years, as the replacement of even one L-amino acid by its D-analogue due to aging of the body is resulted in a number of pathological conditions, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. A recent trend is using short model systems to study the peculiarities of proteins with D-amino acids. In this report, the comparison of the excited states quenching of L- and D-tryptophan (Trp) in a model donor–acceptor dyad with (R)- and (S)-ketoprofen (KP-Trp) was carried out by photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (CIDNP) and fluorescence spectroscopy. Quenching of the Trp excited states, which occurs via two mechanisms: prevailing resonance energy transfer (RET) and electron transfer (ET), indeed demonstrates some peculiarities for all three studied configurations of the dyad: (R,S)-, (S,R)-, and (S,S)-. Thus, the ET efficiency is identical for (S,R)- and (R,S)-enantiomers, while RET differs by 1.6 times. For (S,S)-, the CIDNP coefficient is almost an order of magnitude greater than for (R,S)- and (S,R)-. To understand the source of this difference, hyperpolarization of (S,S)-and (R,S)- has been calculated using theory involving the electron dipole–dipole interaction in the secular equation.     

Automatic control system for spinning and winding of synthetic fibres

An automatic control system for spinning and winding of synthetic fibres that provides for operation of the electric drive of the metering pumps in conditions of stabilization of the melt pressure and rotation rate of the winder drive was proposed. A laboratory bench that simulates operation of the device for controlling spinning and winding of synthetic fibres based on software provided in a microcomputer was created. A parametric, adjustable, asynchronous electric drive from the KPE series which provides for energy-saving conditions was used for the extruder drive. __________ Translated from Khimicheskie Volokna, No. 3, pp. 56–57, May–June, 2007.     

Tests for Resistance to Cryolite: Methods and Comparative Evaluation

Methods of testing refractory and barrier (shielding) materials used in the lining of aluminum electrolyzers for resistance against corrosive attack of electrolyte components are briefly reviewed. The advantages of a method proposed by Allaire et al. [2] are emphasized vis-a-vis the conventional methods that are used to simulate performance of the aluminum electrolysis cell.
