This study investigated the effect of sequential extraction techniques and pretreatment methods in enhancing the recovery of high-value products from spent coffee ground. Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) deoiling was performed to recover non-polar lipids, and subcritical water (SCW) hydrolysis of deoiled spent coffee ground (SCG) was conducted involving pretreatment with ultrasound (US-SCG), and sample particle size reduction (PS-SCG). SCW temperature, solid/liquid mixing ratio, constant pressure and residence time were studied for their effect on extracting reducing sugars (RS), total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), 5-HMF, and furfural. Temperature increase enhanced hydrolysis efficiency and promoted RS dehydration into 5-HMF and furfural. At 180 °C and 40 mg/600 mL, TPC, TFC and RS values increased significantly with ultrasound pretreatment correlating with improved antioxidant activities by DPPH and ABTS assays. Highest amount of 5-HMF and furfural was obtained at 210°C (highest temperature studied) with 44.71 and 2.36 mg/100 g. Chlorogenic acid recovery was the highest in the non-deoiled SCG (15.07 mg/100 g), with no significant difference observed in PS-SCG, suggesting an increase due to its reduced particle size. The results of this study provide comprehensive knowledge on the combined effects of integrated engineering systems to boost the valorisation of SCGs into high-value products. 相似文献

As the urgent need for efficient and sustainable energy usage becomes ever more apparent, interest in Smart Homes is on the rise. The SESAME-S project (SEmantic SmArt Metering – Services for Energy Efficient Houses) uses semantically linked data to actively assist end-consumers in making well-informed decisions and controlling their energy consumption. By integrating smart metering and home automation functionality, SESAME-S works to effectively address the potential mass market of end-consumers with an easily customizable solution that can be widely implemented in domestic or business environments, with expected savings of over 20?% from the total energy bill. The developed system is a basis for conceptualizing, demonstrating, and evaluating a variety of innovative end-consumer services and their user interface paradigms. In this paper, we present the SESAME-S system as a whole and discuss the semantically enabled services, demonstrating that such systems may have broad acceptance in the future. Rare-earth orthoferrites (RFeO3) are well-known for the antiferromagnetic ground state. However, some of the recent experimental results suggest that the few members of RFeO3 family possess ferromagnetism. In the present investigation we report the possible origin of ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic YFeO3 using density functional theory. For this purpose, we have considered pure as well as self-doping in YFeO3 i.e. by considering the point defect at Y, Fe and O sites. Our finding suggests that the point defects in YFeO3 results in the mixed-valence state of Fe, which may result in ferromagnetism through Zener double exchange mechanism. 相似文献

Neural prosthetic systems aim to help disabled patients by translating neural signals from the brain into control signals for guiding computer cursors, prosthetic arms, and other assistive devices. Intracortical electrode arrays measure action potentials and local field potentials from individual neurons, or small populations of neurons, in the motor cortices and can provide considerable information for controlling prostheses. Despite several compelling proof-of-concept laboratory animal experiments and an initial human clinical trial, at least three key challenges remain which, if left unaddressed, may hamper the translation of these systems into widespread clinical use. We review these challenges: achieving able-bodied levels of performance across tasks and across environments, achieving robustness across multiple decades, and restoring able-bodied quality proprioception and somatosensation. We also describe some emerging opportunities for meeting these challenges. If these challenges can be largely or fully met, intracortically based neural prostheses may achieve true clinical viability and help increasing numbers of disabled patients. 相似文献

"Personalized medicine" is a new concept in health care, one aspect of which defines the specificity and dosage of drugs according to effectiveness and safety for each patient. Dosage strongly depends from the rate of metabolism which is primarily regulated by the activity of cytochrome P450. In addition to the need for a genetic characterization of the patients, there is also the necessity to determine the drug-clearance properties of the polymorphic P450 enzyme. To address this issue, human P450 2D6 and 2C9 were engineered and covalently linked to an electrode surface allowing fast, accurate, and reliable measurements of the kinetic parameters of these phase-1 drug metabolizing polymorphic enzymes. In particular, the catalytic activity of P450 2C9 on the electrode surface was found to be improved when expressed from a gene-fusion with flavodoxin from Desulfovibrio vulgaris (2C9/FLD). The results are validated using marker drugs for these enzymes, bufuralol for 2D6, and warfarin for 2C9/FLD. The platform is able to measure the same small differences in K(M), and it allows a fast and reproducible mean to generated the product identified by HPLC from which the k(cat) is calculated. 相似文献

In this paper, the existence of both compressive stress and charge transfer process in hydrothermally synthesized cobalt ferrite–graphene oxide (CoFe2O4/GO) nanocomposites has been established. Transmission electron microscopy results reveal the decoration of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles on GO sheets. Magnetic response of nanocomposites was confirmed from superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer measurement. Optical properties of these nanocomposites were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The interfacial compressive stress involved in this system has been evaluated from observed blue shift of characteristic G peak of graphene oxide. Increase in the full-width half-maximum value as well as upshift in D and G peaks is clear indications of involvement of charge transfer process between GO sheets and dispersed magnetic nanoparticles. The effect of charge transfer process is quantified in terms of shifting of Fermi energy level of these nanocomposites. This is evaluated from variation in contact surface potential difference using scanning Kelvin probe microscopy. XRD spectra of CoFe2O4/GO confirm the polycrystalline nature of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Lattice strain estimated from XRD peaks is correlated with the observed Raman shift. 相似文献

This work looks at the feasibility of a standalone hybrid power generation system for providing power to a rural community
in the Pacific Islands. The optimization and sensitivity analysis of a proposed PV/Wind/Diesel hybrid System is performed
together with economic analysis. We have used HOMER, a sizing and optimization tool for distributed power system, developed
by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for our analysis. The sensitivity analysis was done using wind speed data and
diesel price as variables. An Ice storage facility having a corrected mean daily load of 60 kWh/day was considered as the
stand-alone load. The life cycle cost analysis was done for a number of scenarios with different renewable energy contribution
