Optimized stent expansion by high-pressure inflations of oversized balloons has initially been derived from experience obtained with the Palmaz-Schatz stent, whereas there is little experience with this strategy in the Wallstent. By using this approach with quantitative coronary angiographic guidance, 20 Wallstents and 20 Palmaz-Schatz stents were implanted in 34 patients and consecutively examined by conventional two-dimensional (2D) intracoronary ultrasound (ICUS) and three-dimensional (3D) ICUS on the basis of the application of a pattern recognition algorithm. Ultrasound criteria of adequate stent expansion were defined as a complete apposition of the stent to the vessel wall, a stent symmetry index (SSI = minimum/maximum lumen diameter) > or = O.7, and a stent-reference lumen area ratio (SRR = Minimum intrastent lumen area/Average of proximal and distal reference lumen area) > or = O.8. In all cases a smooth angiographic lumen and a negative diameter stenosis, on the basis of a distal reference, was achieved. For the Wallstents ICUS showed a higher SSI (2D, 0.95 +/- 0.04 vs 0.85 +/- 0.09; p < 0.001; 3D, 0.90 +/- 0.09 vs 0.82 +/- 0.11, p < 0.05) and a lower SRR (2D, 0.66 +/- 0.12 vs 0.81 +/- 0.13, p < 0.005; 3D, 0.63 +/- 0.14 vs 0.74 +/- 0.15, p < 0.05) than for the Palmaz-Schatz stents. Ninety percent of failure in meeting these criteria resulted from a low SRR. The incidence of incomplete stent apposition (one in both stents) or SSI <0.7 was low and generally associated with an SRR <0.8. The Wallstents met the ICUS criteria less often (2D, 2(1O%) vs 10(50%), p < 0.01; 3D, 3(15%) vs 9(45%), p < 0.05), were significantly longer (35.1 +/- 7.7 mm and 14.3 +/- 3.3 mm, p < 0.0001), and generally demonstrated a larger vessel tapering, measured as proximal minus distal ICUS reference lumen area (1.33 +/- 2.91 mm2 vs 0.44 +/- 1.97 mm(2), not significant). Wallstents meeting the ICUS criteria, however, showed less vessel tapering (0.18 +/- 1.64 mm(2)). Thus optimized stent expansion was followed by excellent angiographic results for both Palmaz-Schatz and Wallstent. Although angiographic results and visual assessment of the ICUS examination suggested a good outcome, few Wallstents met the ICUS criteria in contrast to the Palmaz-Schatz stents. The low value of the SRR in the Wallstents is likely to be caused by vessel tapering, suggesting that this criterion may be unsuitable in assessing the adequacy of the expansion of relatively long stents such as the Wallstent.  相似文献

The main topic of this study was to study how cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) could change in response to pH, temperature and inulin; Lactobacillus acidophilus La‐5 was used as a model microorganism. pH, temperature, inulin and incubation time (exposure to prebiotic or incubation at pH 4.0 and 9.0) were combined through a full factorial design and a Central Composite Design; the results were analysed using a multifactorial anova (first step) and a stepwise regression (second step). Temperature and pH significantly affected CSH: an increase in the temperature determined a significant increase in CSH, whereas the correlation pH vs. CSH was negative, as an increase in pH caused a significant decrease in CSH. Inulin played a significant role, but its effect could be influenced by temperature, pH and exposure time. This study is the first approach on the effects of some environmental factors on CSH and suggests that the culturing conditions and/or the exposure to some prebiotics could modify it with positive or negative effects.  相似文献

The analysis of cell confluence and proliferation is essential to design biomaterials and scaffolds to use as bone substitutes in clinical applications. Accordingly, several approaches have been proposed in the literature to estimate the area of the scaffold covered by cells. Nevertheless, most of the approaches rely on sophisticated equipment not employed for routine analyses, while the rest of them usually do not provide significant statistics about the cell distribution. This research aims at studying confluence and proliferation of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) adherent on OSPROLIFE®, a commercial biomaterial in the form of granules. In particular, we propose a Computer Vision approach that can routinely be employed to monitor the surface of the single granules covered by cells because only a standard widefield fluorescent microscope is required. In order to acquire significant statistics data, we analyse wide-area images built by using MicroMos v2.0, an updated version of a previously published software specific for stitching brightfield and phase-contrast images manually acquired via a widefield microscope. In particular, MicroMos v2.0 permits to build accurate “mosaics” of fluorescent images, after correcting vignetting and photo-bleaching effects, providing a consistent representation of a sample region containing numerous granules. Then, our method allows to make automatically a statistically significant estimate of the percentage of the area of the single granules covered by cells. Finally, by analysing hundreds of granules at different time intervals we also obtained reliable data regarding cell proliferation, confirming that not only MSC adhere onto the OSPROLIFE® granules, but even proliferate over time.  相似文献

The interaction of aromatic hydrocarbons benzene, toluene, o-, m- and p-xylene and of methyl pyridines (in particular 2,6-lutidine) with H-ZSM-5 and H-FER zeolites has been studied. Two different H-ZSM-5 samples with strongly different intensity ratios between the two main OH stretching bands have been used. Benzene, toluene and p-xylene enter easily the cavities and give rise to three different H-bonded complexes. Two of them are strongly bonded while the third is likely a very hindered and distorted one. o-Xylene enters slowly the cavities and m-xylene even more slowly. Faster diffusion occurs at higher temperatures. On the contrary, xylenes do not enter the FER cavities. In spite of its steric hindrance, supposed to be the same of m-xylene, 2,6-lutidine enters fast the ZSM channels and is protonated by the internal sites. On the contrary, it does not enter the FER cavities, but it is protonated too on the external silanols sites. Evidence is provided for some kind of heterogeneity of the internal sites of ZSM-5 zeolite. Additionally, it is concluded that other effects besides the molecular sieving effect may play a role in the access and diffusion of molecules into the zeolite channels.  相似文献

Local and superficial near-infrared (NIR) optical-property characterization of turbid biological tissues can be achieved by measurement of spatially resolved diffuse reflectance at small source-detector separations (<1.4 mm). However, in these conditions the inverse problem, i.e., calculation of localized absorption and the reduced scattering coefficients, is necessarily sensitive to the scattering phase function. This effect can be minimized if a new parameter of the phase function gamma, which depends on the first and the second moments of the phase function, is known. If gamma is unknown, an estimation of this parameter can be obtained by the measurement, but the uncertainty of the absorption coefficient is increased. A spatially resolved reflectance probe employing multiple detector fibers (0.3-1.4 mm from the source) is described. Monte Carlo simulations are used to determine gamma, the reduced scattering and absorption coefficients from reflectance data. Probe performance is assessed by measurements on phantoms, the optical properties of which were measured by other techniques [frequency domain photon migration (FDPM) and spatially resolved transmittance]. Our results show that changes in the absorption coefficient, the reduced scattering coefficient, and gamma can be measured to within +/-0.005 mm(-1), +/-0.05 mm(-1), and +/-0.2, respectively. In vivo measurements performed intraoperatively on a human skull and brain are reported for four NIR wavelengths (674, 811, 849, 956 nm) when the spatially resolved probe and FDPM are used. The spatially resolved probe shows optimum measurement sensitivity in the measurement volume immediately beneath the probe (typically 1 mm(3) in tissues), whereas FDPM typically samples larger regions of tissues. Optical-property values for human skull, white matter, scar tissue, optic nerve, and tumors are reported that show distinct absorption and scattering differences between structures and a dependence on the phase-function parameter gamma.  相似文献

In the present paper it is shown how to achieve special interpolation functions that can be applied to the finite element method, least squares methods or other related numerical techniques. We call these functions sequential interpolation functions since one of the main characteristics of this technique refers to the fact that the refinement of the solution does not require the redefinition of the interpolation funtions used in a previous step, as the case for instance in the FEM. The present theory and the FEM using an isoparametric element were compared for a plane stress problem. The results show that both have the same degree of accuracy. The choice of the sequential interpolation functions is easier than those used in the finite element formulation and the computer time was reduced by about 50 per cent.  相似文献

Articular cartilage defects do not heal. Biodegradable scaffolds have been studied for cartilage engineering in order to implant autologous chondrocytes and help cartilage repair. We tested some new collagen matrices differing in collagen type, origin, structure and methods of extraction and purification, and compared the behavior of human chondrocytes cultured on them. Human chondrocytes were grown for three weeks on four different equine type I collagen matrices, one type I, III porcine collagen matrix and one porcine type II collagen matrix. After 21 days, samples were subjected to histochemical, immunohistochemical and histomorphometric analysis to study phenotype expression and cell adhesion. At 7, 14 and 21 days cell proliferation was studied by incorporation of [3H]-thymidine. Our data evidence that the collagen type influences cell morphology, adhesion and growth; indeed, cellularity and rate of proliferation were significantly higher and cells were rounder on the collagen II matrix than on either of the collagen I matrices. Among the collagen I matrices, we observed a great variability in terms of cell adhesion and proliferation. The present study allowed us to identify one type I collagen matrix and one type II collagen matrix that could be usefully employed as a scaffold for chondrocyte transplantation.  相似文献

The topic of this paper is the investigation of the antibacterial effect of ultrasound (US) towards Salmonella enterica in a rice beverage. The beverage was inoculated at different levels (8 and 5 log CFU/mL) and US-treated; then, a challenge test under refrigeration was carried out. The maximum net power of the equipment was 130 W; the treatment was carried out at 40–100% of the net power, for 2–10 min; the pulse was set to 2–10 s. For both the inoculum levels, power and time were the most important factors for the antimicrobial effect towards S. enterica. The combinations resulting in the highest inactivation of the pathogen were tested during the challenge test at 4 °C, and in some combinations, S. enterica remained below the detection limit for 13 days.  相似文献

Energy sources have become a focus of legal, ethical, social and economic pressures due to increasing environmental problems. Nonrenewable energy sources are being increasingly replaced by other sources that are renewable and less pollutive, with technologies aimed at sustainability. Companies that adopt alternative forms of energy will be able to increase their competitiveness and use wastes to generate energy, which is an ecological and economical efficiency approach. In the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, a rural producer of pork crackling and coffee evaluated the entire production cycle of his products and wastes, seeking to achieve energy self sufficiency and identify new possibilities for gains through cost reductions. Biodiesel, soap and detergent are produced with the waste animal fat left from the production of pork crackling. Pig farm wastes become biomass for a biodigester, which produces sufficient biogas to keep the piglets warm, dry the coffee, fry the pork crackling, and generate electricity, among other uses. The biofertilizer produced by the biodigester helps fertilize coffee and corn plantations. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the ecological and economic feasibility of the project. The research method used here is a case study involving qualitative analyses of environmental and social variables and quantitative analyses of economic variables. It is concluded that the investment made in this project yields excellent returns, with savings of 100% in fuels, 50% in electric energy and 40% in fertilizer, in addition to gains from the products developed with the wastes.  相似文献
