Three electrical effects in an approximately stoichiometric propane-oxygen flame seeded with aluminum powder were studied: a) increase in flame current caused by the addition of aluminum, b) effect of transverse electrical field on the rate of aluminum oxide deposition onto a solid surface, c) effect of the field on the rate of heat transfer to a flat plate immersed in the flame. The maximum field was limited by breakdown to about 450 v/cm. It appears that the oxide deposition rate and the heat transfer rate can be influenced by relatively small electric fields.  相似文献

Horizontal pipeline and tubular loop aerators are of interest for fermentation and waste water treatment and are ideally suited for continuous processing. A major drawback is that these pipeline contactors invariably operate in the “elongated bubble and plug” regime in which the mass transfer rate is low. This article evaluates the performance of a horizontal pipeline aerator fitted with nozzles equispaced along its length to enhance mass transfer rates by promoting turbulence and augmenting effective interfacial area. Such devices can also be advantageously used in long pipe lines as in the case of treating waste while it is being transported. Pressure drop and overall liquid-side mass transfer coefficient data are reported as functions of liquid (water) and gas flow rates and nozzle size and spacing. It is shown that for all the conditions studied, kLa = 0.026(ΔP/L)1.036 and that the pressure gradient is given by a simple correlation, provided an empirical parameter which characterises a nozzle is known. Preliminary investigations on the effect of surfactant ad the presence of suspended solids (size 75 μm) on mass transfer coefficient are also reported. Very high values of power dissipation can be achieved in such aerators without mechanically moving parts and high values of mass transfer coefficient can be realized.  相似文献

The gastrointestinal tract of humans is a complex microbial ecosystem known as gut microbiota. The microbiota is involved in several critical physiological processes such as digestion, absorption, and related physiological functions and plays a crucial role in determining the host’s health. The habitual consumption of specific dietary components can impact beyond their nutritional benefits, altering gut microbiota diversity and function and could manipulate health. Phytochemicals are non-nutrient biologically active plant components that can modify the composition of gut microflora through selective stimulation of proliferation or inhibition of certain microbial communities in the intestine. Plants secrete these components, and they accumulate in the cell wall and cell sap compartments (body) for their development and survival. These compounds have low bioavailability and long time-retention in the intestine due to their poor absorption, resulting in beneficial impacts on gut microbiota population. Feeding diets containing phytochemicals to humans and animals may offer a path to improve the gut microbiome resulting in improved performance and/or health and wellbeing. This review discusses the effects of phytochemicals on the modulation of the gut microbiota environment and the resultant benefits to humans; however, the effect of phytochemicals on the gut microbiota of animals is also covered, in brief.  相似文献

Traditional quality measures for image coding, such as the peak signal-to-noise ratio, assume that the preservation of the original image is the desired goal. However, pre-processing images prior to encoding, designed to remove noise or unimportant detail, can improve the overall performance of an image coder. Objective image quality metrics obtained from the difference between the original and coded images cannot properly assess this improved performance. This paper proposes a new methodology for quality metrics that differentially weighs the changes in the image due to pre-processing and encoding. These new quality measures establish the value of pre-processing for image coding and quantitatively determine the performance improvement that can be thus achieved by JPEG and wavelet coders.  相似文献

The use of vegetable‐oil‐based polymeric plasticizers with nanotechnology can create new applications for plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Epoxidized Mesua ferrea L. (Ceylon Ironwood) seed oil was used as a plasticizer for PVC. Further, nanocomposites were prepared through an ex‐situ technique using epoxidized‐oil‐swelled organically modified montmorillonite (5 wt%) and PVC. Notable improvement in thermal and processing characteristics of the nanocomposites was observed over those of the virgin polymer (in both unplasticized and plasticized PVC), as studied by TGA. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques. A dramatic decrease in viscosity (7‐fold) was observed in THF for a 10% solution of epoxidized‐oil‐modified PVC compared to unplasticized PVC in THF, as measured by Brookfield viscometer. Isothermal analysis at three different temperatures (100, 150, and 200°C) reveals sufficient stability of the epoxidized oil modified PVC nanocomposites, as confirmed by gravimetric and FTIR analysis. Augmentation of thermostability and good retention of mechanical properties of the (Mesua ferrea L.)‐plasticized‐PVC/clay nanocomposites with respect to rigid PVC vouch for the utility of the former as advanced industrial materials. A biodegradable poly(ester amide) resin was synthesized from N,N-bis(2-hydroxy ethyl) fatty amide of castor oil with maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and isophthalic acid (100:30:35:35 mole ratio) by the polycondensation process. The fatty amide of the oil was obtained for the first time with 95% yield. The chemical structure of the synthesized resin was characterized by spectroscopic techniques like FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. Various physical properties such as acid value, saponification value, iodine value, specific gravity and viscosity of the resin were also determined. Further the rheological behavior, studied in the steady shear mode showed shear thinning behavior of the resin. The epoxy cured poly(ester amide) thermoset using poly(amido amine) hardener exhibited better properties than with the cycloaliphatic amine hardener cured system. TGA studies also revealed higher thermal stability of the former system than the latter. In vitro-biodegradation study of the poly(ester amide) thermoset using Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilus bacteria revealed superior biodegradability of the thermoset using the former bacterial strain. Excellent chemical resistance against various chemical media including alkali was observed for epoxy-poly(amido amine) cured poly(ester amide) resin over epoxy-cycloaliphatic amine one. The epoxy-poly(amido amine) cured poly(ester amide) thermoset thus has the potential to be used as surface coating material.  相似文献

The aggregation behaviour of two cationic surfactants, viz. cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and N-cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC), in different concentrations of water-soluble polyacrylamide has been studied in alkaline medium by electrical conductivity and surface tension measurements. A decrease in the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the surfactant with an increase in polymer content in the mixture was observed. The thermodynamic and surface parameters have been determined and discussed. The results indicate that micellisation becomes more favourable at higher polymer content.  相似文献

The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) by phytochemicals was investigated using aqueous leaf extracts of Colocasia esculenta and Mesua ferrea Linn. and an aqueous peel extract of orange (Citrus sinensis). The prepared GO and phytoextract reduced GO (RGO) were characterized by ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared analyses to provide a clear indication of the removal of oxygen-containing groups from the graphene and the formation of RGO. The extent of reduction was determined from elemental analysis. Formation of few layers of graphene was indicated by transmission electron microscopy. The obtained RGO exhibited good specific capacitance (17–21 Fg?1), high electrical conductivity (3032.6–4006 Sm?1) and high carbon to oxygen ratio (5.97–7.11).  相似文献

21st Century is treated as the century for highly branched macromolecules, because of their unique structural architecture and outstanding performance characteristics, in the field of polymer science. In the present study, castor oil-based two hyperbranched polyurethanes (HBPUs) were synthesized via A2 + B3 approach using castor oil or monoglyceride of the castor oil as the hydroxyl containing B3 reactant and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) as an A2 reactant along with 1,4-butane diol (BD) as the chain extender and poly(?-caprolactone) diol (PCL) as a macroglycol. The adopted ‘high dilution and slow addition’ technique offers hyperbranched polymers with high yield and good solubility in most of the polar aprotic solvents. Fourier transforms infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses confirmed the chemical structure of synthesized polymers, while wide angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) resulted the insight of their physical structures. The degree of branching was calculated from 1H NMR and found to be 0.57 for castor oil based hyperbranched polyurethane (CHBPU), while it was 0.8 for monoglyceride based hyperbranched polyurethane (MHBPU). The studies showed that MHBPU and CHBPU exhibited tensile strength 11 MPa and 7 MPa, elongation at break 695% and 791%, scratch hardness 5 kg and 4.5 kg, gloss 84 and 72, respectively. Thermal properties like thermo stability, melting point, enthalpy, degree of crystallinity and glass transition temperature (Tg); and chemical resistance in different chemical media were found to be almost equivalent for both the polyurethanes. The measurements of dielectric constant and lost factor indicated that both the HBPUs behave as dielectric materials. Thus the synthesized HBPUs have the potential to be used as advanced surface coating materials.  相似文献
