The discovery in 1985 of C-fullerenes, a novel carbon allotrope with a polygonal structure made up solely by 60 carbon atoms, and in 1991 of C-nanotubes, thin carbon filaments (1-3 μm in length and 0.001 μm in diameter) with extraordinary mechanical properties, opened a wide field of activity in carbon research. While toxicity and biocompatibility of C-fullerenes have been widely investigated, literature data concerning the biological properties and biotoxicity of C-nanotubes are poor and contradictory. Here we test the ability of highly purified C-Single-Walled-Nanotubes (SWNTs) and C-fullerenes to elicit an inflammatory response by murine and human macrophage cells in vitro. In order to determine the potential of these C-derivatives as biological inducers of inflammatory reactions we evaluate the ability of C-single-walled nanotubes and C-fullerenes to induce the release of NO by murine macrophages cells, to stimulate the phagocytic activity of human macrophage cells and to be cytotoxic against these cells. We show that SWNTs-C-nanotubes, when highly purified, as well as C-fullerenes, do not stimulate the release of NO by murine macrophage cells in culture, their uptake by human macrophage cells is very low, and they possess a very low toxicity against human macrophage cells.  相似文献

Core cross-linked amphiphilic star-block copolymers were prepared by hydrolysis of the outer shell of star-block copolymers prepared using copper mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In an arm-first approach, linear poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) macroinitiators (PtBMA-Cl) were extended with styrene to yield PtBMA-b-PS-Cl and then cross-linked with divinylbenzene (DVB) in order to yield (PtBMA-b-PS)arms-PDVBcore star-block copolymers. Then, PMAA-b-PS block and (PMAA-PS)arms-PDVBcore star-block copolymers were obtained by hydrolysis of the PtBMA blocks in both linear and cross-linked copolymers, as confirmed by 1H NMR analyses. The amphiphilic character of these copolymers was confirmed by solubilisation in water. Several factors affecting the polymer aggregation and solubility such as the length, the composition of the arms and the catalyst used were studied. An acrylate analogue, that is, (PAA-b-PS)arms-PDVBcore, was also prepared for comparison purposes. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to elucidate the morphology and the thermal behaviour of the star-block copolymers.  相似文献

Although cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have received much attention from biologists because of their important role in insect communication, few studies have addressed the chemical ecology of clonal species of eusocial insects. In this study we investigated whether and how differences in CHCs relate to the genetics and reproductive dynamics of the parthenogenetic ant Cerapachys biroi. We collected individuals of different ages and subcastes from several colonies belonging to four clonal lineages, and analyzed their cuticular chemical signature. CHCs varied according to colonies and clonal lineages in two independent data sets, and correlations were found between genetic and chemical distances between colonies. This supports the results of previous research showing that C. biroi workers discriminate between nestmates and non-nestmates, especially when they belong to different clonal lineages. In C. biroi, the production of individuals of a morphological subcaste specialized in reproduction is inversely proportional to colony-level fertility. As chemical signatures usually correlate with fertility and reproductive activity in social Hymenoptera, we asked whether CHCs could function as fertility-signaling primer pheromones determining larval subcaste fate in C. biroi. Interestingly, and contrary to findings for several other ant species, fertility and reproductive activity showed no correlation with chemical signatures, suggesting the absence of fertility related CHCs. This implies that other cues are responsible for subcaste differentiation in this species.  相似文献

A standard flash desolventizing system has been combined with horizontal agitated meal stripping and cooking vessels operating at atmospheric pressure to provide an integrated system for the production of high, intermediate, or low protein dispersability index edible soybean flakes from extracted solvent-wet flakes. Flash desolventizing removes most of the hexane in the wet flakes by evaporation at low temperature in a turbulent stream of superheated hexane vapor. The small remaining hexane quantity is removed in a stripping process capable of producing the full range of protein dispersability index values in the flakes by treating the flash desolventized flakes with either dry superheated steam or wet saturated steam under carefully controlled conditions of steam temperature, pressure, flow rate, and moisture content. Weighted walkthroughs are a quantitative model for representing the spatial relation between two raster features in image databases. In this paper, we establish a correspondence between the weighted walkthroughs and qualitative models for spatial reasoning. We provide rules for estimating qualitative geometric properties and topological relations from the quantitative data that are computed for each pair of pixel sets. The approach has been tested through experiments with raster regions.  相似文献

We present a comparative study of parallel Schwarz preconditioners in the solution of linear systems arising in a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) procedure for turbulent plane channel flows. This procedure applies a time-splitting technique to suitably filtered Navier–Stokes equations, in order to decouple the continuity and momentum equations, and uses a semi-implicit scheme for time integration and finite volumes for space discretisation. This approach requires the solution of four sparse linear systems at each time step, accounting for a large part of the overall simulation; hence the linear system solvers are a crucial component in the whole procedure. Several preconditioners are applied in the simulation of a reference test case for the LES community, using discretisation grids of different sizes, with the aim of analysing the effects of different algorithmic choices defining the preconditioners, and identifying the most effective ones for the selected problem. The preconditioners, coupled with the GMRES method, are run within SParC-LES, a recently developed LES code based on the PSBLAS and MLD2P4 libraries for parallel sparse matrix computations and preconditioning.  相似文献

Retreatment of silicon slurry by membrane processes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The purpose of the present study is to develop a process to regenerate the polish liquid used in Chemical and Mechanical Polishing (CMP), called “slurry”, and more specifically Silicon CMP slurry. Physico-chemical analyses show a considerable dilution of slurry through washing waters used in polishing. Thus, this effluent has been characterised for a better identification of the deviations from the slurry of reference (Point Of Use). Hence, the principle is to regenerate this effluent by membrane processes. The ultrafiltration results obtained at laboratory scale have led to the development of an industrial prototype. An optimal utilisation of this treatment allows completing a two-step process: the reconcentration by ultrafiltration and a chemical adjustment by addition of concentrated slurry. A stable behaviour of the slurry at the different steps of the process has been observed. Polishing results are similar with retreated and POU slurries. Furthermore, the functioning at industrial scale permits to maintain the performances obtained on the laboratory pilot.  相似文献

Drug resistance is emerging in many important microbial pathogens, including Candida albicans. We performed fungal susceptibility tests with archived isolates obtained from 1984 through 1993 and fresh clinical isolates obtained from 1994 through 1997 by testing their susceptibilities to fluconazole, ketoconazole, and miconazole and compared the results to the rate of fluconazole use. All isolates recovered prior to 1993 were susceptible to fluconazole. Within 3 years of widespread azole use, we detected resistance to all agents in this class. In order to assess the current prevalence of resistant isolates in our hematologic malignancy and transplant patients, we obtained rectal swabs from hospitalized, non-AIDS, immunocompromised patients between June 1995 and January 1996. The swabs were inoculated onto sheep's blood agar plates containing 10 microg of vancomycin and 20 microg of gentamicin/ml of agar. One hundred one yeasts were recovered from 97 patients and were tested for their susceptibilities to amphotericin B, fluconazole, flucytosine, ketoconazole, and miconazole. The susceptibility pattern was then compared to those for all clinical isolates obtained throughout the medical center. The antifungal drug histories for each patient were also assessed. The yeasts from this surveillance study were at least as susceptible as the overall hospital strains. There did not appear to be a direct linkage between prior receipt of antifungal agent therapy and carriage of a new, drug-resistant isolate. Increased resistance to newer antifungal agents has occurred at our medical center, but it is not focal to any high-risk patient population that we studied. Monitoring of susceptibility to antifungal agents appears to be necessary for optimizing clinical therapeutic decision making.  相似文献

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry is a modern efficient technique that allows reconstructing the height profile of the observed scene. However, apart for the presence of critical nonlinear inversion steps, particularly crucial in abrupt topography scenarios, it does not allow one to separate different scattering mechanisms in the elevation (height) direction within the ground pixel. Overlay of scattering at different elevations in the same azimuth-range resolution cell can be due either to the penetration of the radiation below the surface or to perspective ambiguities caused by the side-looking geometry. Multibaseline three-dimensional (3-D) SAR focusing allows overcoming such a limitation and has thus raised great interest in the recent research. First results with real data have been only obtained in the laboratory and with airborne systems, or with limited time-span and spatial-coverage spaceborne data. This work presents a novel approach for the tomographic processing of European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS) real data for extended scenes and long time span. Besides facing problems common to the airborne case, such as the nonuniformly spaced passes, this processing requires tackling additional difficulties specific to the spaceborne case, in particular a space-varying phase calibration of the data due to atmospheric variations and possible scene deformations occurring for years-long temporal spans. First results are presented that confirm the capability of ERS multipass tomography to resolve multiple targets within the same azimuth-range cell and to map the 3-D scattering properties of the illuminated scene.  相似文献
