A comparison between different PMD compensation techniques   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17  
We quantify the benefits of using different techniques for compensation of polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in fiber-optic communication systems by means of numerical simulations. This is done both with respect to PMD-induced pulse broadening and in terms of system outage probability for different data formats [nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ)]. Attention is focused on simple and relevant single- and double-stage post-transmission compensators with a few degrees of freedom (DOF). It is generally believed that a PMD compensator with a polarization controller and a variable delay line can only compensate the PMD to the first order. We show, from analytical results, the counterintuitive fact that this scheme can also partially compensate for higher order PMD. We also investigate the benefit of using a polarizer as compensation element where the optical average power can be used as a feedback signal  相似文献

Short return-to-zero pulses (/spl sim/2 ps) are generated at bit rates of 40, 80, and 160 Gb/s using a fiber-optical parametric amplifier. The performance of the parametric pulse source is evaluated both back-to-back and in a 110-km transmission link. A receiver sensitivity of -33 dBm back-to-back was achieved after demultiplexing from 160 to 10 Gb/s. The power penalty at 160 Gb/s due to 110-km transmission was less than 2 dB. Very short pulses (0.5 ps) were also achieved when using the parametric amplifier as a compressor.  相似文献

A novel, purely optical technique for demultiplexing high-speed time-division multiplexed data is proposed and demonstrated. The technique uses optical fibre nonlinearity induced four-wave mixing with a data signal and a probe signal located at different wavelengths. Using only semiconductor laser light sources, 1:4 demultiplexing of 20 ps long, subpicojoule, 2/sup 15/-1 RZ pulses at a data rate of 16 Gbit/s with less than 1 dB penalty is demonstrated.<>  相似文献

We have, for the first time, observed and experimentally quantified the soliton robustness to polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) in a dispersion-managed (DM) fiber link. Long-term measurements were performed in a system where the PMD-characteristics were varying randomly over time. The longitudinal mode-hopping and the associated terminal electrical noise in AlGaAs buried heterostructure lasers in an external-cavity configuration are investigated. It is found that the electrical mode-hopping noise has a1/f-dependence when two external-cavity modes are involved in the mode-hopping. Furthermore, it is found that the optical feedback can suppress the electrical noise significantly below the noise level of the free-running laser. This corresponds to a reduction of the emission line width which is in agreement with the reduction of the electrical noise level. A novel, nonoptical, scheme for active elimination of mode-hopping attributable to thermal drift or mechanical disturbances in CW-operated external-cavity lasers is also proposed and demonstrated. Using this method, where the electrical noise is used as an error signal in a control loop, long-term single external-cavity mode operation and low electrical noise and optical intensity noise levels were maintained.  相似文献

An evaluation of a fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA)-based pulse source in terms of pulse width and chirp is presented. Experiments are performed when operating the FOPA as a pulse source, requiring a sinusoidally modulated pump. The FOPA is generating pulses at 10 GHz, and are measured using a streak camera capable of measuring pulses as a function of time, wavelength, and intensity. Experimental results are presented together with a theory for chirp and pulse widths that show good agreement.  相似文献

Measurements of the spectral properties of ridge waveguide graded index separate-confinement heterostructure single-quantum-well GaAs/AlGaAs lasers are discussed. Long cavity lasers (800 μm) exhibit remarkably pure single-longitudinal mode spectra under continuous operation in spite of the short cavity mode spacing. At an output power of 5 mW, the sidemode suppression exceeds 24 dB and the linewidth is 1.5 MHz. The linewidth-power product is 6.4 MHz-mW. Measurements of the linewidth power product as a function of cavity length L gives an L-2 dependence in agreement with theory for lasers with small internal loss. The results are used to deduce the linewidth enhancement factor α at the gain peak wavelength ant its dependence on the excitation level. A decrease in α was observed for lasers operating at the second quantized state due to a recovery of the differential gain  相似文献

The noise figure (NF) properties of an undepleted and lossless dual-pump fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) are theoretically and numerically investigated. The theoretical study takes into account the noise characteristics of the two pump waves that are considered to have parallel polarization states for gain maximization. It is shown that noisy pump waves degrade the amplifier's NF, especially when the amplifier is operating at high gain values and when the input signal is high. The theoretical observations are validated by Monte Carlo numerical simulations, and the agreement between them is excellent. Finally, a comparative study concerning the noise characteristics of dual-pump and single-pump FOPAs is performed.  相似文献

We present an all-optical time-division demultiplexer with 22 dB conversion efficiency, using four-wave mixing (FWM) at 1550 nm in a single-mode dispersion-shifted fiber. Error-free demultiplexing of 20 Gb/s data to 10 Gb/s is obtained, with 1.4 dB power penalty at BER=10 -9. We also derive theoretical expressions for the conversion efficiency, the maximum bit rate that is possible to demur and the shape of the switching window. In particular we emphasize the importance of phase-matching in order to achieve a flat switching window. Furthermore the pump must remain undepleted to avoid a detrimental reduction of the extinction ratio due to instantaneous parametric gain saturation  相似文献
