Observations on isovolemic hemodilution in acute ischemic stroke

The reduction of blood viscosity is an alternative of the improvement of the cerebral flow during an acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We studied 18 patients with AIS, ranging in age from 44 to 72 years (mean age 57 years), 11 females and 7 males. We applied an isovolemic hemodilution for 2 days starting with an emission of 250 or 500 ml blood, followed by the infusion of an equal amount of 6% HAES-steryl solution. We made determination of hematocrit, plasma density, plasma viscosity 1, 3 and 6 hours before and after the infusion; a decrease was noted in all the studied hemorheologic parameters, and the short term clinical course was an improvement. In conclusion, the isovolemic hemodilution using 6% HAES solution reduced hematocrit, plasma density, plasma viscosity but no changes were noted in the hemodynamic parameters; isovolemic hemodilution as the single therapeutic method in AIS does not solve the therapy, involving only one pathogenetic link, i.e., the microcirculation.     

Quinone‐Fused Pyrazoles through 1,3‐Dipolar Cycloadditions: Synthesis of Tricyclic Scaffolds and in vitro Cytotoxic Activity Evaluation on Glioblastoma Cancer Cells

A novel and straightforward synthesis of highly substituted isoquinoline‐5,8‐dione fused tricyclic pyrazoles is reported. The key step of the synthetic sequence is a regioselective, Ag₂CO₃ promoted, 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition of C‐heteroaryl‐N‐aryl nitrilimines and substituted isoquinoline‐5,8‐diones. The broad functional group tolerability and mild reaction conditions were found to be suitable for the preparation of a small library of compounds. These scaffolds were designed to interact with multiple biological residues, and two of them, after brief synthetic elaborations, were analyzed by molecular docking studies as potential anticancer drugs. In vitro studies confirmed the potent anticancer effects, showing promising IC₅₀ values as low as 2.5 μm against three different glioblastoma cell lines. Their cytotoxic activity was finally positively correlated to their ability to inhibit PI3K/mTOR kinases, which are responsible for the regulation of diverse cellular processes in human cancer cells.     

Directed self-assembly of epitaxial CoFe2O(4)-BiFeO3 multiferroic nanocomposites

CoFe(2)O(4) (CFO)-BiFeO(3) (BFO) nanocomposites are an intriguing option for future memory and logic technologies due to the magnetoelectric properties of the system. However, these nanocomposites form with CFO pillars randomly located within a BFO matrix, making implementation in devices difficult. To overcome this, we present a technique to produce patterned nanocomposites through self-assembly. CFO islands are patterned on Nb-doped SrTiO(3) to direct the self-assembly of epitaxial CFO-BFO nanocomposites, producing square arrays of CFO pillars.     

Immobilization of monolayer protected lipophilic gold nanorods on a glass surface

We present a novel process of immobilization of gold nanorods (GNRs) on a glass surface. We demonstrate that by exploiting monolayer protection of the GNRs, their unusual optical properties can be completely preserved. UV-visible spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy analysis are used to reveal the optical and morphological properties of monolayer protected immobilized lipophilic GNRs, and molecular dynamics simulations are used to elucidate their surface molecule arrangements.
