Echo-planar techniques in MRI use a rapidly oscillating frequency-encoding gradient with the potential to produce peripheral nerve stimulation. To evaluate the incidence, type, and location of stimulation in a commercial whole-body scanner, we studied two groups: (a) 173 consecutive individuals scanned by echo-planar imaging for other purposes and (b) seven subjects who were scanned with an extensive set of 36 echo-planar sequences (with prompting after each scan to report any peripheral nerve stimulation) to test the effects of various parameters. Although only 5% of group A reported symptoms of peripheral nerve stimulation, all in group B experienced some type of stimulation, dependent primarily on direction of the oscillating gradient and location of the body within the gradient coil. Maximum stimulation typically occurred 30 to 40 cm from isocenter in the region of maximum dB/dt. Generally, y gradients produced truncal stimulation, and x gradients produced stimulation in the head. When hands were clasped over the abdomen, a tingling in the hands occasionally was felt. The properties of a semiconductor laser amplifier as optical switching gate are investigated. Particular attention is paid to gain, contrast ratio, and switching time of the device. These properties are studied experimentally and theoretically with respect to the injection current, optical input power, and cavity resonances. The experimental arrangements and the theoretical method are described. As an example of the various applications of semiconductor laser amplifier gates, packet switching experiments with self-routing, employing cascaded switching gates, are reported. Student academic underachievement is a concern of paramount importance in Europe, where around 15% of the students in the last high school courses do not achieve the minimum knowledge academic requirement. In this paper, we propose a model based on a system of differential equations to study the dynamics of the students’ academic performance in the German region of the North Rhine-Westphalia. This approach is supported by the idea that both good and bad study habits, are a mixture of personal decisions and influence of classmates. Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a granulomatous vasculitis that affects the upper respiratory tract, lung, and kidney. Since T cells make up a significant proportion of cells infiltrating granulomatous lesions in WG, we investigated the proliferative response and cytokine profile of T cells from these patients. PBMCs were isolated from 12 patients with active WG, 7 patients with inactive disease, and 12 healthy normal donors. PBMCs from clinically active WG patients exhibited increased proliferation following stimulation with either PMA/ionomycin or anti-CD2 and anti-CD28, when compared with normal donors. In addition, these PBMCs exhibited increased secretion of IFN-gamma, but not of IL-4, IL-5, or IL-10. Furthermore, TNF-alpha production from PBMCs and CD4+ T cells isolated from patients with WG was elevated, when compared with healthy donors. In further studies, we investigated the ability of WG patients' monocytes to produce IL-12 and showed that both inactive and active patients produced increased amounts of IL-12. Finally, the in vitro IFN-gamma production by WG PBMC is inhibited in a dose-dependent manner by exogenous IL-10. These data suggest that T cells from WG patients overproduce IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha, probably due to dysregulated IL-12 secretion, and that IL-10 may therefore have therapeutic implications for this disease. 相似文献

Au-oxide-semiconductor barriers have been studied in n-type InP. A comparison was made, using the ESCA technique and current/voltage characteristics, between different natural oxides obtained with nitric acid as reagent. Internal reflection ellipsometry was used for detection of the consecutive coating of two polyelectrolytes, poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), onto a tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) substrate until the 10th bilayer. The UV patterned PAH-PAA-multilayer was characterized in air via ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy. Suited optical models enabled the determination of the layer thicknesses in wet and dry states. Linear multilayer formation could be proved by Attenuated Total Reflection — Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy measurements following the increase of the ν(C=O) band depending on the adsorption of the PAA. Streaming potential measurements after each layer deposition step indicated a change in surface charge after each layer deposition due to the consecutive coating of PAH and PAA. In this article the internal reflection ellipsometry is shown to be a convenient possibility to analyze the modification of a thin transparent Ta2O5 substrate. 相似文献

As the nascent field of food studies takes shape, insights from queer studies have the potential to enrich our understandings of the interrelationships among food, gender, and sexuality. The project of queering food studies invites us to consider how food practices and beliefs reinforce and resist heterosexual gender ideologies. In this article, I analyze foodways in recent Chicana lesbian literature, examining writings that illustrate the cultural endurance of heteronormative constructions of gender even as they demonstrate how these beliefs are disrupted, destabilized, and transformed in queer literary kitchens. Poetry and essays by Chicana lesbians challenge dominant models of Chicana culinary roles by emphasizing women's efforts to satisfy their physical and sexual appetites.In particular, Carla Trujillo's 2003 novel, What Night Brings, highlights the figure of the hungry lesbian as a provocative counterpoint to the literary image of the Chicana as cook. Literature by Chicana lesbians not only invites scholars to question heteronormative assumptions about food, gender, and identity, but also demonstrates the potential of queer studies to enrich a variety of topics in food scholarship. 相似文献
