The influence of school- and age-related variables was examined separately on 2 tasks involving elementary quantitative skills: conservation of number and mental addition. Performance on these tasks was compared by using a cutoff design with 3 groups of kindergarten and Grade 1 children who differed in age but not amount of schooling (grade), in schooling but not age, or in both age and schooling. The effects of age and schooling were distinct. On conservation of number, performance improved as a function of age but not schooling. On mental arithmetic, accuracy improved with schooling rather than age but children's use of various solution procedures (e.g., retrieval, counting) was not influenced by schooling. Thus, in the domain of elementary mathematical skills, the influence of schooling can be very specific, and age-related variables other than schooling play an important role in the development of elementary mathematical skills. Starches isolated from 23 bread wheats (Triticum aestivum) and 26 durum wheats (T. durum) contained 26.3-30.6% (mean 29.1%) total amylose, 19.3–25.1% (mean 22.9%) apparent amylose and 783–1144mg 100g?1 (mean 977 mg 100g?1) lysophos-pholipids. Gelatinisation temperatures were 57.3–64.9°C (mean 61.8°C) and enthalpies 6.4–11.8 Jg?1 (mean 9.7Jg?1) in excess water, measured by differential scanning calorimetry. There were no correlations between any of these parameters. Starch granule size distributions were determined with a Coulter Counter and 100–channel analyser. A-granule mean volumes were 1235–2585μm3 (av. 1778), modal volumes 863–1804μm3 (av. 1264), mean diameters 13.9–16.0μm (av. 13.99), and specific surface areas 0.236–0.302m2g?1. B-granule mean volumes were 35.4–100.4μm3 (av. 55.9), modal volumes 16.5–54.5μm3 (av. 27.7), mean diameters 3.66–5.07μm (av. 4.09), and specific surface areas 0.684–0.920m2g?1. The solar radiation climate of Indonesia was surveyed from 1969 to 1976 as part of a project of the Meteorological and Geophysics Centre, Jakarta. Summaries of this survey have been presented in reports of the Centre for Meteorological and Geophysics primarily from the point of view of climatic studies. The study reported in the present paper has processed this data into computer compatible form and generated representative data years for use in the analysis of the performance of solar energy collecting systems. The Trichuris muris-mouse model of intestinal helminth infection provides a convenient system to examine the immune mechanisms operating during acute and chronic infection. Particular subsets of helper T lymphocytes (CD4+Th cells) play an important role in regulating infection via the secretion of distinct groups of cytokines. Reciprocal activation of Th cell subsets is associated with either expulsion of the parasites from the intestine (Th2 cells) or chronic infection (Th1 cells). In vivo neutralization experiments using anti-cytokine monoclonal antibodies show that critical cytokines are involved, with interferon-gamma playing an important role in the establishment of chronic trichuriasis and interleukin-4 in expulsion of the parasite from the gut. This model has provided clear evidence of a crucial role for distinct cytokines in mediating host protection against intestinal helminth infection and that manipulation of the immune response through the Th cell-cytokine axis can benefit either the host or the parasite. As such, the T. muris model is poised to generate important new data relevant not only to intestinal helminthiasis but to the wider field of parasite immunity and infection in general. 相似文献

Composition and microbiological contamination was measured in samples of pre-packed dates purchased from a number of stores and retail outlets in Greater Glasgow. The sugar content of dried pitted dates was c . 74%, about 10% more than reported on those packs where nutritional information was given. Potentially pathogenic bacteria like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus were identified in some of the samples together with lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and moulds, Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus . Six experiments are reported that contrasted the effects of frequency and age of acquisition on written word recognition. Age of acquisition affected word-naming speed when frequency was controlled (Experiment 1), but there was no effect of frequency when age of acquisition was controlled (Experiment 2). Experiments 3 and 4 found an effect of age of acquisition upon immediate but not delayed naming speed, but no frequency effect on either immediate or delayed naming once age of acquisition was controlled. Independent effects of frequency and age of acquisition were observed in the lexical decision task (Experiments 5 and 6). Implications for theoretical accounts of word recognition and the possible roles of age of acquisition and frequency in word recognition are discussed. The compositions of the fatty acids in the 1, 2 and 3 positions of the principal glycerolipids and their various stereoisomers
were determined. Fatty acids in the 1 and 3 positions of triglycerides were similar in composition and less unsaturated than
those in the 2 position. Fatty acids in the 1,2-, 1,3- and 2,3-diglycerides were distributed in a pattern which indicated
isomerization ofsn-1,2-diacylglycerol. Lysophosphatidyl choline (the principal monoacyl lipid) consisted of about 80% 1-acyl and 20% 2-acyl
isomers. The fatty acid compositions indicated that most of the 2-lysophosphatidyl choline was formed by isomerization of
1-lysophosphatidyl choline. Most of the digly cerides and lysophosphatidyl choline were synthesized in the ripening wheat
grain. However a small proportion of these partial glycerides and all of the other minor partial glycerides (monoglycerides,
digalactosyl monoglycerides) appeared to be the result of limited lipolysis of the corresponding diacyl lipids in the wheat
or in the freshly-milled flour. Fatty acids in the 2 position of all the fully acylated glycerides were very similar in composition,

A novel stylus based profiling instrument has been developed for rapid measurement of small surface areas. Outlined in the following paper are some of the key features of the prototype system including the wideband stylus pick-up and the dedicated scanning traverse mechanism. This study examined trainee crime-scene investigators' preference for, and accuracy in using, four different computer-based decision support interface designs, each of which incorporated a different reduced processing information acquisition strategy. The interfaces differed on the basis of the number of options that could be considered simultaneously and the level of control that could be exercised over the number and sequence in which feature values were accessed. Forty trainee investigators completed six decision scenarios in which they were asked to acquire information and formulate a decision by selecting one of three options. The study comprised two phases, the first of which involved familiarizing participants with each of the four interface designs and collecting performance and subjective data. The second phase involved trainees selecting one of the four interfaces to engage in a fifth and sixth decision scenario involving high or low levels of time-pressure. The results indicated that the “all options, full control” interface was the preferred option in the low time-pressure condition. Although the strategy remained the most frequently selected in the high time-pressure condition, this preference was not significant. It was concluded that the perceptions of difficulty and the degree of user control over information acquisition were more important than perceived efficiency in the selection of computer-based interface designs.
