Bamboo strips treated with caustic solutions of different concentrations, e.g., 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 50%, were subjected to mechanical testing giving stresses on tensile strength, percent elongation at break, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and toughness. The change in average density was ?15%, and the weight loss value shows a maximum of 21.94% at 50% alkali treatment. The mechanical properties of bamboo strips increase steadily with increasing concentration of caustic soda, showing a comparable increased value at 15 and 20%, and then exhibiting a gradual fall. The percent elongation at break corroborates these observations showing a continuous decreasing trend. The properties under investigation exhibit a clear transition in between 15 and 20% alkali concentration. The morphology of strips was studied by scanning electron microscope and polarizing light microscope. The crystal structure of both untreated and treated strips was compared by XRD analysis. In both cases, the breakdown of the crystal structures of the cellulose fibers and the recrystallization or reorientation of the degraded chains that are devoid of hemicellulose are quite apparent. However, at a very high concentration (to the extent of 25%) the breakdown of structure predominates much more over the reorientation or recrystallization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In developing nations, Internet infrastructure in scarce; however, majority of people in developing countries also need access to information that matter for their daily life and livelihood. As cost of computers are higher than mobile phones and infrastructure for running computers by stable electricity is not widely available at many places of under developed and developing (hence, referred as developing) countries. One of the major options for under-privileged people in developing countries to access information is through mobile phone. A mobile device with GPRS for access to Internet services is still expensive for a common man to afford in developing countries. Therefore, to offer mobile web for the developing countries, we need to look at SMS (Short Message Service) as transport bearer, which is cheaper and can support most of the actionable services (many important services which needs a few bytes to exchange the information). SMS as transport bearer has one constraints – it does not interoperate (i.e., a user belong to one service provider is not able to access services by SMS-data of another service provider). In this paper, we propose a routing algorithm that makes SMS-data interoperable. We also propose architecture for mobile web over SMS as transport bearer for seamless application access in roaming, number portability, and vehicular condition. Substantial researches have been done on performance of TCP/IP for wireless web that mainly focused on three applications viz., file transfer, Electronic mail, and World Wide Web. This paper presents performance of actionable information through online transaction over TCP/IP and SMS under similar conditions; it shows SMS is not at a disadvantage compared to TCP/IP.  相似文献

Resol resin composites reinforced with alkali‐treated bamboo strips were fabricated with a hand‐lay‐up technique. This study was aimed at the evaluation of the influence of the caustic concentration on the mechanical properties of bamboo‐strip‐reinforced resol composites with a constant 50% loading of the reinforcement. The treatment of bamboo fiber in a solution of sodium hydroxide with increasing concentration percentages resulted in more and more rigid composites; as a result, the strength and modulus values exhibited improvements. The maximum improvement in the properties was possibly achieved with 20% caustic treated reinforcements. An infrared study indicated the formation of aryl alkyl ether with ? OH groups of cellulose and methylol groups of resol. Beyond 20%, there was degradation in all the strength properties due to the failure of the mechanical properties of the reinforcement itself. A correlation was found to exist between the mechanical properties and the morphology that developed. Another set of composites with variable loadings of 20% alkali treated fiber (40, 50, and 60%) was fabricated, and a 60% fiber loading showed the best mechanical properties. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene (PP) was melt blended with Vectra B‐950 [a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP)], in a single screw extruder in presence of different doses of ethylene acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer, as modifier. The effect of incorporation in different proportions of EAA at a fixed dose of 5% LCP, on mechanical, thermal, morphological, and rheological properties of such blends was studied and the same were compared with that of pure PP and amongst themselves. Mechanical analysis (tensile properties) of the prepared blends exhibited improvements in ultimate tensile strength (UTS), modulus, toughness, hardness, and impact strength of PP matrix with the incorporation of EAA. The improvement in mechanical properties is associated with the formation of LCP fibrils as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A strong interaction through H‐bonding between the segments of Vectra B‐950 and EAA was established by FTIR study. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies indicated substantial increase in melting point of the blends, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the thermal stability of PP was improved with the addition of LCP and EAA. Rheological properties showed that LCP and EAA drop down the melt viscosity of PP and thus facilitate processibility of blends. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Six methyl pheophorbide-a derivatives were prepared by linking a tryptamine side chain at the C-13 1 , C-15 2 and C-17 3 positions of pheophorbide-a. P repared conjugates were characterized and evaluated for their photocytotoxicity against A549 cells. The conjugate 6 a with strong absorption at 413 nm (Soret band), 663–671 nm (Q bands) and comparable fluorescence quantum yield (0.26) was found to exhibit significant cytotoxicity (659 nM). Molecular integration of pheophorbide-a and tryptamines showed synergistic effects as the most potent conjugate 6 a was identified with enhanced photocytotoxicity when compared to methyl pheophorbide-a. T he conjugate 6 a was smoothly taken up by A549 cells and exhibited intracellular localization predominantly to lysosome in the cytoplasm. Upon photoirradiation 6 a generated singlet oxygen to show potent cytotoxicity toward A549 cells.  相似文献

A new kind of pH and temperature responsive poly(acrylamide‐co‐itaconic acid) hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization using ammonium persulfate as initiator and different comonomer ratios. The hydrogels were characterized in terms of chemical composition, swelling‐deswelling behavior, morphology, crystallographic behavior, and drug release properties. All the hydrogels showed high swelling ability in aqueous solutions, the maximum being at pH 7. Swelling decreased on either side of pH 7 (i.e., both in acidic and alkaline region) and increased with increase in temperature. The hydrogel with 10 mol% itaconic acid (IA) absorbed maximum water among the copolymer gels. The cellular structures of the hydrogels were clearly revealed by microscopic analysis and SEM pictures. Swelling of the gels in water followed non‐Fickian type of diffusion principle. The hydrogel was proved to be a controlled release vehicle, for example in drug delivery by using its smart properties. The hydrogel with 10 mol% IA also absorbed maximum amount of drug (ascorbic acid) under study. Incorporation of drug in hydrogel matrix was established from XRD peak analysis. POLYM. ENG. Semi1 and semi2 interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of PVC and in situ formed PMMA have been synthesized using diallyl phthalate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinkers of PVC and PMMA, respectively. These two types of IPNs have been compared w.r.t their physical, mechanical, and thermal properties and an endeavor has been made to find a correlation of these properties with the morphology generated in these systems. The semi1 IPNs displayed a decrease in their mechanical parameters and the physical properties as well, while in contrast, the semi2 IPNs exhibited a marginal increase in the corresponding values after an initial drop upto about 15% of crosslinked PMMA incorporation when compared to the crosslinked PVC in the case of semi1 IPN and linear PVC in the case of semi2 IPN. The various samples of semi1 and semi2 IPNs showed a two‐stage degradation typical of PVC, while confirming the increased stability with the samples having higher percentages of PMMA. The influence of crosslinking of the major matrix in semi1 IPN was almost counterbalanced by the influence of crosslinking in the dispersed PMMA phase in the case of semi2 IPN. The softening characteristics as detected by the extent of penetration of the probe, as has been detected by thermomechanical analysis, are in conformity with their mechanicals. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper describes the growth of barium chromate (BaCrO4) nanocrystallites within thermally evaporated thin films of stearic acid (StA) and sodium bis-2-ethylhexyl-sulfosuccinate by a process of Ba2+ ion entrapment followed by in situ reaction with CrO42− ions. Dense spherical assemblies of BaCrO4 nanocrystallites of very uniform size (∼50 nm) were obtained within the two different host matrices. The spherical assemblies were composed of smaller (ca. 5–10 nm size) BaCrO4 crystals indicating that efficient size control over crystal size may be exercised by the matrix. Contact angle measurements of the BaCrO4–StA and BaCrO4–sodium bis-2-ethylhexyl-sulfosuccinate films indicated that they were hydrophobic, thus pointing to the possible role of hydrophobic interaction between the StA and sodium bis-2-ethylhexyl-sulfosuccinate monolayer-covered BaCrO4 crystals in the assembly process.  相似文献
