Gender gaps within management

Traditional roles need not become self-fulfilling prophecies if managers can bridge the gender gap. Feminine, as well as masculine, characteristics can be incorporated into managerial styles to enhance effective leadership. Autonomy, decision-making and assertiveness are as important as nurturing and caring. What are little girls made of? Little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. What are little boys made of? Little boys are made of rats and snails and puppy dog tails.     

Investigation of a heat stress-related death of a fire fighter

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Division of Surveillance, Hazard Evaluations and Field Studies (DSHEFS) conducts investigations of health hazards in the workplace under the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) program. In September 1990, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) requested that NIOSH assess the health and safety practices used by fire personnel during a brush fire on September 6, 1990, in Sedgwick County, Kansas. A 25-year-old fire fighter died of heat stroke at the scene.The NIOSH site visit to Sedgwick County, Kansas included a tour of the fire scene, personal interviews with 25 fire fighters and support personnel, and a review of incident reports, incident command procedures and other documents. NIOSH investigators concluded that a preventable series of events preceded the fire fighter's death. Recommendations were made for incident command and safety procedures, as well as medical monitoring, rehabilitation of fire fighters at fire scenes, and rehydration schedules.     

Design concepts of instruments for vector parameter identification

The concepts for design of phase-sensitive measuring instruments, based on two-phase synchronous detection, are proposed. The main idea of the design is to utilize the advantages of both analog and digital signal processing methods via combining the principles of synchronous detection and averaging with the principles of integrating analog-to-digital and functional digital-to-analog conversion

A direct laboratory technique for fabricating dental laminate restorations is described; the method provides good soft tissue compatibility and esthetic appearance with reduced chair time and enhanced patient comfort.     

Analysis and reproduction of a signal's periodic components by means of an extended block-adaptive Fourier analyzer

This paper presents some results of developing a signal analyzer for performing spectral analysis and simultaneous reproduction/filtering of the input signal's periodic components of different (in general, not harmonically related) frequencies and waveforms/spectra. The proposed analyzer accomplishes this task by applying adaptive recursive Fourier analysis.     

Dispositional Attribution: Multiple Inferences About Motive-Related Traits.

This research views dispositional inference as a process whereby perceivers integrate multiple inferences about a target person's motives and traits. The findings suggest that although perceived motives may stimulate extra attributional processing (S. Fein, 1996), the content of the inferred motive is important as well. Perceivers learned about situational forces implying that a target person had free choice, no choice, or an ulterior motive for helpful behavior. Inferences about the target's helpfulness differed depending on whether the target's behavior was attributed to an obedience motive (no-choice condition) or to a selfish motive (ulterior-motive condition). In general, inferences about motives were more predictive of dispositional inferences than were global causal attributions (to situational vs. dispositional forces) or base rate assumptions.
