There is an increasing demand for the development of a simple Si‐based universal memory device at the nanoscale that operates at high frequencies. Spin‐electronics (spintronics) can, in principle, increase the efficiency of devices and allow them to operate at high frequencies. A primary challenge for reducing the dimensions of spintronic devices is the requirement for high spin currents. To overcome this problem, a new approach is presented that uses helical chiral molecules exhibiting spin‐selective electron transport, which is called the chiral‐induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. Using the CISS effect, the active memory device is miniaturized for the first time from the micrometer scale to 30 nm in size, and this device presents memristor‐like nonlinear logic operation at low voltages under ambient conditions and room temperature. A single nanoparticle, along with Au contacts and chiral molecules, is sufficient to function as a memory device. A single ferromagnetic nanoplatelet is used as a fixed hard magnet combined with Au contacts in which the gold contacts act as soft magnets due to the adsorbed chiral molecules.  相似文献

The study applies Winnicott's conceptualization of potential space to the alexithymia construct by using a new Rorschach index, the Reality-Fantasy Scale (RFS). The scale uses variables derived from the Rorschach Comprehensive System (Exner, 2000, 2001) to detect different types of psychopathological manifestations conceptualized as forms of collapse of potential space. Following previous research, the present study further evaluates the construct validity of the RFS in a sample of 92 patients with inflammatory bowel disease, categorized on the basis of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) as alexithymic, indeterminate alexithymia, and nonalexithymic groups. As hypothesized, the RFS significantly correlated with the TAS-20, discriminated among the 3 groups, and showed incremental validity in detecting alexithymia over isolated Rorschach markers. We have developed a model to test several underlying assumptions of bacterial source tracking (BST) when the BST method is based on detection of discrete genetic markers from source-specific bacteria. The model consists of an environment and discrete-time input signals that represent sources of contamination partitioned into marker-bearing and nonmarker-bearing units "shed" into the environment. Simulations run for different types of environmental contamination patterns indicate that if hosts shed different percentages of BST markers, the environment cannot be accurately characterized unless a correction method is used. The correction method, which requires the solution to a linear system, reduces the mean error in estimating the proportions of host contamination to below 3%. The effectiveness of the method depends on accurate knowledge of the occurrence and prevalence of markers in the various hosts; this may be a challenging task, especially if these values vary across populations in space and time. In addition, the correction method does not compensate for environments with low-density or unmixed contamination. In conclusion, our simulations highlight several fundamental challenges that may prevent absolute quantification of fecal input using discrete marker BST.  相似文献

Acoustic holography is a transmission‐based ultrasound imaging method that uses optical image reconstruction and provides a larger field of view than pulse‐echo ultrasound imaging. A focus parameter controls the position of the focal plane along the optical axis, and the images obtained contain defocused content from objects not near the focal plane. Moreover, it is not always possible to bring all objects of interest into simultaneous focus. In this article, digital image processing techniques are presented to (1) identify a “best focused” image from a sequence of images taken with different focus settings and (2) simultaneously focus every pixel in the image through fusion of pixels from different frames in the sequence. Experiments show that the three‐dimensional image information provided by acoustic holography requires position‐dependent filtering for the enhancement step. It is found that filtering in the spatial domain is more computationally efficient than in the frequency domain. In addition, spatial domain processing gives the best performance. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The disadvantage of current biodegradable metals such as Mg and Fe is the release of hydrogen gas in vivo that can cause gas embolism and the production of voluminous iron oxide that can cause inflammation, respectively. Such considerations have turned focus towards Zn as an alternative. This is based on the fact that Zn plays a crucial role in many physiological processes, as well as potentially being biocompatible and capable of with biodegradation. As such, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate the in vivo performance of pure Zinc and Zn–2%Fe implants. The use of iron as an alloying element was aimed at accelerating the corrosion rate of pure zinc by a micro-galvanic effect so as to maintain the post-implantation biodegradation characteristics of the implant. In vivo assessment was carried out using cylindrical disks implanted in the back midline of 16 male Wistar rats for up to 24 weeks. Post-implantation evaluation included monitoring the well-being of rats, weekly examination of hematological parameters: serum Zn levels, red and white blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels, X-ray radiography, histological analysis and corrosion rate assessment. The results obtained in terms of well-being, hematological tests and histological analysis of the rats indicate that the in vivo behavior of pure Zn and Zn–2%Fe implants was adequate and in line with the results obtained by the control group containing inert Ti–6Al–4V alloy implants. The corrosion rate of Zn–2%Fe alloy in in vivo conditions was relatively increased compared to pure Zn due to micro-galvanic corrosion.  相似文献

A novel synthesis method of very high aspect ratio metal nanowires is described. The synthesis utilizes a nanoporous membrane as a template and self-electrophoresis as a directed force that continuously push formed nanowires out of the pores in a rate that is identical to the rate of their elongation. As a result, while the pores of membranes are only 6 microm long, the formed nanowires could be more than 100 microm long.  相似文献

We show how simple mechanical agitation of precipitated CdSe quantum dot aggregates causes partially reversible color changes (clearly visible to the eye) in the absorption spectrum of the CdSe (about 4 nm size). The color changes, which are due to changes in size quantization, are not accompanied by change in quantum dot size. This phenomenon is explained by partial deaggregation of the precipitates, leading to reduced charge overlap between neighboring dots. Shaking was shown to result in a looser aggregate structure. It is suggested that CdSO3 particles (an initial product of the CdSe formation reaction) act as weak bridges between CdSe quantum dots, mediating the interparticle interactions and allowing the deaggregation to occur on shaking.  相似文献

This study examined the impact of killing on posttraumatic stress symptomatology (PTSS), depression, and alcohol use among 317 U.S. Gulf War veterans. Participants were obtained via a national registry of Gulf War veterans and were mailed a survey assessing deployment experiences and postdeployment mental health. Overall, 11% of veterans reported killing during their deployment. Those who reported killing were more likely to be younger and male than those who did not kill. After controlling for perceived danger, exposure to death and dying, and witnessing killing of fellow soldiers, killing was a significant predictor of PTSS, frequency and quantity of alcohol use, and problem alcohol use. Military personnel returning from modern deployments are at risk of adverse mental health symptoms related to killing in war. The study explores the DSM-IV-TR classification of eating disorders that is constituted of four subtypes, two of them defined as anorexia (restricting and binge eating/purging) and two as bulimia (purging and non-purging). This classification is based on body weight as the distinguishing criterion. However, psychoanalytic thinking substantially distinguishes between restricting anorexia and the other three subtypes, all of them involving binge eating. Accordingly, binge eating patients are assumed to present different personality characteristics and different dynamics including dissociation proneness as a core component of the disturbance. The dissociative component of binge eating is examined by using the Rorschach Reality-Fantasy Scale (RFS; Tibon, Handelzalts, & Weinberger, 2005) and other Rorschach measures in a sample of 61 female adolescent inpatients diagnosed with eating disorders. This sample was divided into two groups by using the criterion of whether or not the symptoms involve binge eating behavior. The results support the view that dissociation between reality and fantasy is an important facet of binge eating disorders. A case study that demonstrates the utility of the RFS is presented.
