This paper describes the development of a simple system for measurement of net water movement through biological membrane barriers. The system is based on the detection of a water meniscus inside a polyethylene tube, which reflects the water movement inside one hemichamber of a modified Ussing chamber containing a membrane barrier. The detection device consists of a commercial computer-controlled flat bed scanner and specifically developed software. This system allows one to perform a relatively high number of individual experiments per physical unit. It is a flexible and affordable device, which allows comparatively more information per unit to be obtained than previously described methods. 相似文献

Vibration characteristics of an elastic plate in the shape of an infinite strip are changed by applying a lateral concentrated
force to the plate. The homogeneous, isotropic, elastic plate is infinite in the x-direction and the sides are simply supported. The size of the force is changed in proportion to the displacement measured
at a certain point of the plate. The proportionality constant serves as the control parameter. The mathematical formulation
of this distributed control problem and its analytical solution in terms of the vibration frequencies of the plate are given.

Blended cements containing high volume of natural zeolites: Properties, hydration and paste microstructure 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, properties and hydration characteristics as well as paste microstructure of blended cements containing 55% by weight zeolitic tuff composed mainly of clinoptilolite mineral were investigated. Free Ca(OH)2 content, crystalline hydration products and decomposition of zeolite crystal structure, pore size distribution and microstructural architecture of hydrated cement pastes were examined. Superplasticizer requirement and compressive strength development of blended cement mortars were also determined. The blended cements containing high volume of natural zeolites were characterized with the following properties; (i) no free Ca(OH)2 in hardened pastes at the end of 28 days of hydration, (ii) less proportion of the pores larger than 50 nm when compared to portland cement paste, (iii) complete decomposition of crystal structure of zeolite at the end of 28 days of hydration, (iv) presence of tetra calcium aluminate hydrate as a crystalline product of pozzolanic reaction, (v) more compatibility with the melamine-based superplasticizer when compared to the naphthalene based product, and (vi) similar 28 days compressive strength of mortars to that of reference portland cement. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of the analysis of cell wall‐bound hydroxycinnamic acids and the composition of lignin to evaluate the in vivo digestibility of a silage collection with unknown botanical composition was evaluated. RESULTS: Syringyl units content and total etherified phenols showed the highest correlation coefficients with in vivo dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) (r = ? 0.792 and r = ? 0.703, respectively), while guaiacyl units and total phenols showed the highest correlation coefficients with in vivo organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) (r = ? 0.871 and r = ? 0.817, respectively). Using the above‐mentioned chemical parameters, 10 equations were also developed to predict in vivo digestibility. The prediction of IVDMD produced a high adjusted R2 value (0.710) using syringyl, total lignin, etherified total phenols, esterified ferulic acid and total phenol content as predictors. The prediction of IVOMD produced a higher adjusted R2 value (0.821) using guaiacyl, total phenols, total ferulic acid and etherified p‐coumaric acid content as predictors. CONCLUSION: Cell wall digestibility depends on a multiplicity of factors and it is not possible to attribute a causal effect on in vivo digestibility to any single factor. However, syringyl and guaiacyl content and etherified phenols emerge as good predictors of digestibility. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry 相似文献

We have conducted a retrospective study of deaths on a paediatric medical intensive care unit over a two-year period and reviewed similar series from outside the UK. There were 89 deaths out of 651 admission (13.7% mortality). In almost two-thirds of the cases death occurred with a decision to limit medical treatment or withdraw mechanical ventilation, implying that additional or further therapy was considered futile. We highlight this as a crucially important issue in the practice of intensive care. More comprehensive studies are needed to help clinicians derive consensus on what constitutes a futile intervention, and therefore when such an intervention should be withheld. This will help families and society better understand the limitations of intensive care. 相似文献

Brucellosis in sheep, caused by Brucella ovis, is primarily a chronic infectious disease of rams with epididymitis as its most characteristic lesion. Six hundred rams from an infected farm were clinically and serologically examined once a year, over a 3-year period. An increase from 2.1% to 6.3% in the prevalence of animals serologically positive to B. ovis occurred over the 3 years. However, the prevalence of rams with lesions in the reproductive tract declined from 14.2% to 6.5% in the third year following one year of strict culling of clinically affected and rams that were serologically positive for B. ovis. Clinical lesions found in the 179 affected rams fell into two main categories: rams with epididymitis and rams with affected lymph nodes. These results suggest that the prevalence of the disease relates mainly to the sexual activity of the animal and not to age in itself. A single cull based on the results of clinical examination and serological test results was unable to decrease the prevalence of B. ovis in an extensive Corriedale sheep flock. 相似文献

This study aims at coupling of activated sludge treatment with nanofiltration to improve denim textile wastewater quality to reuse criteria. In the activated sludge reactor, the COD removal efficiency was quite high as it was 91+/-2% and 84+/-4% on the basis of total and soluble feed COD, respectively. The color removal efficiency was 75+/-10%, and around 50-70% of removed color was adsorbed on biomass or precipitated within the reactor. The high conductivity of the wastewater, as high as 8 mS/cm, did not adversely affect system performance. Although biological treatment is quite efficient, the wastewater does not meet the reuse criteria. Hence, further treatment to improve treated water quality was investigated using nanofiltration. Dead-end microfiltration (MF) with 5 microm pore size was applied to remove coarse particles before nanofiltration. The color rejection of nanofiltration was almost complete and permeate color was always lower than 10 Pt-Co. Similarly, quite high rejections were observed for COD (80-100%). Permeate conductivity was between 1.98 and 2.67 mS/cm (65% conductivity rejection). Wastewater fluxes were between 31 and 37 L/m2/h at 5.07 bars corresponding to around 45% flux declines compared to clean water fluxes. In conclusion, for denim textile wastewaters nanofiltration after biological treatment can be applied to meet reuse criteria. 相似文献
