The relative reactivities as well as the stoichiometric coefficients for a number of flavonoids, catechols, and—for comparison—standard phenolic antioxidants were determined by analyzing the kinetics of oxygen consumption in organic and micellar systems, with peroxidation initiated by lipid- and water-soluble azo initiators. The results demonstrated that the flavonoids did not behave as classic phenolic antioxidants such as α-tocopherol, but showed only moderate chain-breaking activities. The results were in line with other structure-activity relationship studies on the importance of the B-ring catechol structure, the 2,3-double bond, and the 3,5-hydroxy groups. The data are discussed in view of possible explanations of the deviations flavonoids reveal in their behavior compared with regular phenolic antioxidants.  相似文献

Reviews the book, Human cognitive abilities: A survey of factor-analytic studies by J. B. Carroll (see record 1993-97611-000). Carroll divides his book into three parts. The first is a historical and conceptual review of psychometric theory. Carroll begins by clearly defining and differentiating key concepts such as ability, aptitude, achievement, latent trait, and intervening variable, although recognizing that in practice it is often difficult to make absolute distinctions. The second part, and the bulk of the book, is a detailed analysis and synthesis of a myriad of findings in the area of cognitive abilities. In the third part of his book, Carroll summarizes his undertaking and addresses traditional concerns and controversies. He compares and contrasts his model of cognitive abilities with that of others. Although Carroll's book does not and indeed cannot resolve the issues and controversies concerning the nature of human cognitive abilities, it does represent a notable contribution to our ongoing endeavours. It undoubtedly is a book that anyone interested in cognitive abilities would wish to explore because of its encyclopedic, in-depth coverage of the topic. Terrain analysis using radar shape-from-shading   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
This paper develops a maximum a posteriori (MAP) probability estimation framework for shape-from-shading (SFS) from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The aim is to use this method to reconstruct surface topography from a single radar image of relatively complex terrain. Our MAP framework makes explicit how the recovery of local surface orientation depends on the whereabouts of terrain edge features and the available radar reflectance information. To apply the resulting process to real world radar data, we require probabilistic models for the appearance of terrain features and the relationship between the orientation of surface normals and the radar reflectance. We show that the SAR data can be modeled using a Rayleigh-Bessel distribution and use this distribution to develop a maximum likelihood algorithm for detecting and labeling terrain edge features. Moreover, we show how robust statistics can be used to estimate the characteristic parameters of this distribution. We also develop an empirical model for the SAR reflectance function. Using the reflectance model, we perform Lambertian correction so that a conventional SFS algorithm can be applied to the radar data. The initial surface normal direction is constrained to point in the direction of the nearest ridge or ravine feature. Each surface normal must fall within a conical envelope whose axis is in the direction of the radar illuminant. The extent of the envelope depends on the corrected radar reflectance and the variance of the radar signal statistics. We explore various ways of smoothing the field of surface normals using robust statistics. Finally, we show how to reconstruct the terrain surface from the smoothed field of surface normal vectors. The proposed algorithm is applied to various SAR data sets containing relatively complex terrain structure.  相似文献

Scores were analyzed from two samples of undergraduate university students in the Toronto area who answered a questionnaire on exam anxiety (the "Test Anxiety Inventory": TAI). The samples (n = 645 and n = 462), which were both made up of women and men, some with English as their mother tongue and others having a mother tongue other than English, showed very comparable result patterns. Women reported a higher exam anxiety level than men on both dimensions of the questionnaire: Worry (TAIW) and Emotionality (TAIE). Students with a mother tongue other than English, an indicator of recent immigration--reported a higher level of anxiety than students whose mother tongue is English, for both the worry component and the emotionality component. Also, and moreover generally, the worry component of TAI (but not the emotionality component) appeared to have a negative correlation with the results obtained by the students in the final exam for the psychology introductory course in which they were registered. This correlation was not attenuated when a general intelligence test was taken into account. Finally, the TAI factorial structure was similar for both samples, with a model using two correlated factors showing better adjustment to the data than a unifactorial model. Given the strong correlation between the two factors, however, (r = 0,80), this hierarchical design of the TAI was supported. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The synthesis of chemically stabilized cristobalite (CSC) by a wet-chemical route is described. CSC is a form of silica (containing small amounts of other oxides) which is similar in many ways to β-cristobalite, but does not invert to α-cristobalite upon cooling. The effects of changing the dopant levels and various synthetic parameters on the phases formed in the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 system have been investigated. Stabilization of cristobalite with a number of different dopant combinations has been attempted, with mixed results. The use of wet-chemical techniques has led to the synthesis of apparently phase-pure CSC in a composition region where traditional solid-state synthetic techniques yield a mixture of other phases.  相似文献

The dechlorinating and genotoxicity-removing activities of nitrifying fluidized-bed reactor biomass towards chlorinated organic compounds in water were shown at level below 1 ppm. The removal rates of adsorbable organic halogens were 200 micrograms Cl (g VS day)-1 for chlorinated humic ground water and 50 micrograms Cl (g VS day)-1 for chlorinated lake water when studied in batch mode. In a sequenced batch mode the removal rates [micrograms Cl (g VS day)-1] were 2000 from chlorohumus, 1400-1800 from chlorophenols in chlorinated ground water, and 430-720 from chlorohumus in chlorinated lake water. Genotoxicity was removed to a large extent (60%-80%) from the chlorinated waters upon incubation with nitrifying reactor biomass. 2,6-Di-, 2,4,6-tri and 2,3,4,6-tetrachlorophenols competed with chlorinated water organohalogens for dechlorination. The dechlorination of chlorophenols and chlorohumus required no ammonia and was not prevented by inhibitors of ammonia oxidation, nitrapyrin, parathion, sodium diethyldithiocarbamate, or allylthiourea. Electron microscopical inspection of the biomass showed the dominance of clusters of bacteria resembling known nitrifying species, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter, and Nitrosospira. This was supported by polymerase chain reaction amplification of the biomass DNA with four different primers, revealing the presence of 16S rDNA sequences assignable to the same species. The most intensive band obtained with the Nitroso4E primer was shown to be closely related to Nitrosomonas europaea by restriction analysis.  相似文献

Using rats in a cross-fostering design, we examined the effects of pre- and post-weaning rearing environments on feeding neophobia, open field activity, runway training, and visual discrimination learning. Fostering had no effect on the offspring behaviors. The animals reared, post-weaning, in an enriched environment consumed more food in a novel situation, were less active in the open field, and learned the first of two discrimination tasks faster than did the animals reared in the standard condition. Inter-correlations among these measures were nonsignificant, suggesting that the effect of environment on learning cannot be reduced to temperamental factors. The deficit in learning resulting from rearing in standard environment does not, however, appear to be irreversible; animals reared in the standard condition reached performance levels on the second discrimination task characteristic of those reared in the enriched environment. Most of the basic knowledge about radical reactions comes from radiation chemical studies in vitro. In view of the rapidly increasing knowledge on radical reaction in vivo, it is important to reconcile the fundamental physico-chemical reaction characteristics of radicals with the need to explain their alleged biological effects. Severe problems in the understanding of their in vivo action remain unsolved. An example is phagocytosis, which seems to be a paradigm of a 'deleterious' radical process. The exact mechanism is not clear; so it is an open question whether the intruder is eventually killed by radicals (like OH) or by endproducts of radical reactions (like H2O2 and/or HOCl). It is even more difficult to understand signalling by radicals: owing to their chemical nature they are 'unspecifically' reacting species--they withdraw or add electrons--and thus their reactions are governed by redox-properties. Since all radicals have different redox characteristics and different molecular shapes, the usual key-and-keyhole picture for molecular interaction does not apply, as there, is no reactive site conceivable which has the property of reacting with radicals 'specifically. Our intent in this article is: (i) to briefly review some fundamental characteristics of in vitro radical reactions, (ii) to extrapolate from this to the conditions in vivo, and (iii) to discuss current hypotheses concerning the redox-regulation of cellular signalling. This leads us to the tentative conclusion that radicals per se must be tolerated by the cell and do not threaten its life, if they stay below a certain concentration limit. The main biological implication of radical-reactions seems to be that the cell derives signals from the balance of oxidative versus reductive processes and that radicals may interact with pathways of intra- and intercellular communication.  相似文献

The importance of thyroid hormones in the regulation of development, growth, and energy metabolism is well known. Over the last decades, mass spectrometry has been extensively used to investigate thyroid hormone metabolism and to discover and characterize new molecules involved in thyroid hormones production, such as thyrotropin-releasing hormone. In the earlier period, the quantification methods, usually based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, were complicated and time consuming. They were mainly focused on basic research, and were not suitable for clinical diagnostics on a routine basis. The development of the modern mass spectrometers, mainly coupled to liquid chromatography, enabled simpler sample preparation procedures, and the accurate quantification of thyroid hormones, of their precursors, and of their metabolites in biological fluids, tissues, and cells became feasible. Nowadays, molecules of physiological and pathological interest can be assayed also for diagnostic purposes on a routine basis, and mass spectrometry is slowly entering the clinical laboratory. This review takes stock of the advancements in the field of thyroid metabolism that were carried out with mass spectrometry, with special focus on the use of this technique for the quantification of molecules involved in thyroid diseases.  相似文献

Pre‐processing is a prerequisite to conduct effective and efficient downstream data analysis. Pre‐processing pipelines often require multiple routines to address data quality challenges and to bring the data into a usable form. For both the construction and the refinement of pre‐processing pipelines, human‐in‐the‐loop approaches are highly beneficial. This particularly applies to multivariate time series, a complex data type with multiple values developing over time. Due to the high specificity of this domain, it has not been subject to in‐depth research in visual analytics. We present a visual‐interactive approach for preprocessing multivariate time series data with the following aspects. Our approach supports analysts to carry out six core analysis tasks related to pre‐processing of multivariate time series. To support these tasks, we identify requirements to baseline toolkits that may help practitioners in their choice. We characterize the space of visualization designs for uncertainty‐aware pre‐processing and justify our decisions. Two usage scenarios demonstrate applicability of our approach, design choices, and uncertainty visualizations for the six analysis tasks. This work is one step towards strengthening the visual analytics support for data pre‐processing in general and for uncertainty‐aware pre‐processing of multivariate time series in particular.  相似文献
