Behaviors and emotions during specific visits may reveal the interpersonal processes of mother-daughter ties, yet most research uses global assessments of these ties. Forty-eight mother-daughter pairs participated in audiotaped conversations and completed surveys. All mothers were over age 70 and in good health. Daughters tended to take a central role in structuring the conversations. Conversations were characterized by high levels of felt and expressed positive emotions and behaviors for mothers and daughters. Nevertheless, mothers reported more positive and fewer negative emotions, whereas daughters expressed more positive behaviors than did mothers. Mothers' positive feelings and behaviors were associated with daughters'. Finally, mothers' and daughters' emotions and behaviors were associated with their destructive responses to being upset with each other, providing support for the ambivalence perspective of parent-offspring relationships. Older adults report more positive feelings and fewer problems in their relationships than do younger adults. These positive experiences may partially reflect how people treat older adults. Social partners may treat older adults more kindly due to their sense that time remaining to interact with these older adults is limited. Younger (n = 87, age 22 to 35) and older (n = 89, age 65 to 77) participants indicated how positively they would behave (i.e., express affection, proffer respect, send sentimental cards) and what types of conflict strategies they would use in response to hypothetical negative interactions with two close social partners, a younger adult and an older adult. Multilevel models revealed that participants were more avoidant and less confrontational when interacting with older adults than when interacting with younger adults. Time perspective of the relationship partially mediated these age differences. Younger and older participants were also more likely to select sentimental cards for older partners than for younger partners. Findings build on socioemotional selectivity theory and the social input model to suggest that social partners facilitate better relationships in late life. Tensions are normative in the parent–child tie, but there is less information on the strategies used to cope with such tensions. This study examined strategies parents and adult children use in reaction to interpersonal tensions and the implications of those strategies for relationship quality. Parents and their adult sons and daughters (aged 22 to 49 years; N = 158 families, 474 individuals) reported the strategies they used in response to tensions with one another (constructive, destructive, and avoidant). Across dyads, parents and adult children reported using constructive strategies more often than destructive or avoidant strategies. Strategy use varied between and within dyads by generation, gender of parent, ethnicity, education, and age of child. Constructive strategies predicted better relationship quality, whereas avoidant and destructive strategies predicted poorer relationship quality. Parents may be more likely to use constructive strategies, which are meant to maintain the relationship because of their greater investment in the tie. Little is known about the transposable elements of species closely related to Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We present a novel transposable element in Saccharomyces paradoxus, a close congener of S. cerevisiae. Sequence analysis of this element, designated Ty3-1p, indicates that it is a homologue of the S. cerevisiae Ty3 element. Ty3-1p shares 82% nucleotide identity with an S. cerevisiae Ty3 element and appears to be structured identically to Ty3, containing two overlapping open reading frames, six retroviral-like domains, a J domain, and flanking sigma-like elements. A sigma element from Ty3-1p is 75% identical to a Ty3 sigma element. There is no evidence of horizontal transfer of Ty3 in Saccharomyces sensu stricto. We assess the distributions of Ty3p and Ty3 element insertions in natural population samples of S. paradoxus and S. cerevisiae. The S. paradoxus population sample exhibits Ty3p insertions present at a variety of sites at low frequency; this suggests that Ty3p elements are active in the sampled population. The S. cerevisiae population sample exhibits a uniform Ty3 hybridization profile in which all element insertions appear to be fixed. We comment on the possible causes of these contrasting observed distributions (GenBank Accession Nos AY198186 and AY198187).  相似文献

Close friends and family play an important role in adults' lives, but little is known about the implications of infrequent or peripheral social ties that adults maintain. Eighty-seven adults, ranging in age from 24 to 87 years (M?=?51.25) provided information about their holiday card networks. Participants completed surveys for up to 25 cards that they received during one holiday season (n?=?1,405 surveys completed) and provided the holiday greetings as well, if they were willing (n?=?1,152 cards). Over half of the cards participants received were from individuals whom participants did not consider to be close friends or family members and whom they had not seen in over a year. Adults of all ages described emotional reactions to approximately one third of the cards they received. Younger adults tended to view their holiday greetings as a means of maintaining or building new social ties, whereas older adults were more likely to view their holiday greetings as a link to their personal past. Receiving a greater number of holiday cards and receiving cards from close social contacts were associated with increased feelings of social embeddedness. Similarities and differences between peripheral ties and close social ties are considered. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Aging parents tend to perceive greater compatibility between themselves and offspring than do offspring, but there is little research examining differences in perceptions of conflicts. Ninety-six older mothers (M age?=?76) and their daughters (M age?=?44) together selected a conflictual incident, then individually rated the degree to which they and the other person had engaged in destructive, constructive, or avoidant conflict behaviors. Mothers and daughters reported using constructive approaches more than other approaches. Mothers claimed to engage in constructive behaviors more than daughters recognized. Daughters reported engaging in destructive and avoidant behaviors more than mothers realized. Mothers also thought daughters felt better about the incident than daughters reported feeling about it. Findings suggest older mothers' underestimate daughters' negative behaviors and feelings in conflict situations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
