Gelatin is one of the most important multifunctional biopolymers and is widely used as an essential ingredient in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics. Porcine gelatin is regarded as the leading source of gelatin globally then followed by bovine gelatin. Porcine sources are favored over other sources since they are less expensive. However, porcine gelatin is religiously prohibited to be consumed by Muslims and the Jewish community. It is predicted that the global demand for gelatin will increase significantly in the future. Therefore, a sustainable source of gelatin with efficient production and free of disease transmission must be developed. The highest quality of Bovidae-based gelatin (BG) was acquired through alkaline pretreatment, which displayed excellent physicochemical and rheological properties. The utilization of mammalian- and plant-based enzyme significantly increased the gelatin yield. The emulsifying and foaming properties of BG also showed good stability when incorporated into food and pharmaceutical products. Manipulation of extraction conditions has enabled the development of custom-made gelatin with desired properties. This review highlighted the various modifications of extraction and processing methods to improve the physicochemical and functional properties of Bovidae-based gelatin. An in-depth analysis of the crucial stage of collagen breakdown is also discussed, which involved acid, alkaline, and enzyme pretreatment, respectively. In addition, the unique characteristics and primary qualities of BG including protein content, amphoteric property, gel strength, emulsifying and viscosity properties, and foaming ability were presented. Finally, the applications and prospects of BG as the preferred gelatin source globally were outlined.  相似文献

Breast and prostate cancers are frequently treated with chemotherapy. Several novel chemicals are being reported for this purpose, particularly synthetic and natural benzophenones. This work reports the synthesis of substituted 2-hydroxybenzophenones through 1,4-conjugate addition/intramolecular cycloaddition/dehydration of nitromethane on key intermediate chromones. Structures were extensively studied by means of 2D NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal XRD. Their cytotoxicity was evaluated in vitro in two breast cancer cell lines (MDA-MB-231 and T47-D) and one prostate cancer cell line (PC3). The most potent compound exhibited good cytotoxic effects against the three cancer cell lines (IC50 values ranging from 12.09 to 26.49 μm ) and induced cell-cycle retardation only on prostate cancer cells, which suggested that it might exert cell-type-specific effects.  相似文献

Strains of Bacteroides fragilis associated with diarrheal disease (enterotoxigenic B. fragilis) produce a 20-kDa zinc-dependent metalloprotease toxin (B. fragilis enterotoxin; BFT) that reversibly stimulates chloride secretion and alters tight junctional function in polarized intestinal epithelial cells. BFT alters cellular morphology and physiology most potently and rapidly when placed on the basolateral membrane of epithelial cells, suggesting that the cellular substrate for BFT may be present on this membrane. Herein, we demonstrate that BFT specifically cleaves within 1 min the extracellular domain of the zonula adherens protein, E-cadherin. Cleavage of E-cadherin by BFT is ATP-independent and essential to the morphologic and physiologic activity of BFT. However, the morphologic changes occurring in response to BFT are dependent on target-cell ATP. E-cadherin is shown here to be a cellular substrate for a bacterial toxin and represents the identification of a mechanism of action, cell-surface proteolytic activity, for a bacterial toxin.  相似文献

Martensitic 12% chromium stainless steel is generally used for the manufacture of water vapour turbine blades. This material, under these environmental conditions, develops fatigue corrosion with failure as a result of the segregation of certain constituent elements such as phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S),[1–3] or the presence of some types of inclusions.[2–4] To be able to understand and explain these phenomena, in situ characterization of the fractured surfaces were performed for two types of samples: steel 1 as manufactured turbine material whose fracture mode is intergranular and steel 2 issued from last stage turbine blades after 100 000 h service at 40 °C whose fracture mode is transgranular. The techniques used for characterization were scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with the x-ray analysis by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The Auger results enabled the understanding of the brittle to ductile transition for the material by showing the simultaneous diffusion of carbon from grain boundaries (GB) to grains (G) and chromium from G to GB. Furthermore, the heavy segregation of phosphorus at the GBs could explain the intergranular crack rupture traces observed in steel 2. SEM observations coupled with EDS analysis showed the presence of different types of non-metallic inclusions such as silicon-based complex inclusions and manganese sulfides (MnS). The presence of silicon-based complex inclusions at GB could explain the intergranular fracture mode previously reported. The characterization of the fracture appearance suggests also that MnS inclusions can act as nucleation sites for secondary microcracks at the GB level that were observed after service.  相似文献

Consideration is given to the buoyancy effects on the fully developed gaseous slip flow in a vertical rectangular microduct. Two different cases of the thermal boundary conditions are considered, namely uniform temperature at two facing duct walls with different temperatures and adiabatic other walls (case A) and uniform heat flux at two walls and uniform temperature at other walls (case B). The rarefaction effects are treated using the first-order slip boundary conditions. By means of finite Fourier transform method, analytical solutions are obtained for the velocity and temperature distributions as well as the Poiseuille number. Furthermore, the threshold value of the mixed convection parameter to start the flow reversal is evaluated. The results show that the Poiseuille number of case A is an increasing function of the mixed convection parameter and a decreasing function of the channel aspect ratio, whereas its functionality on the Knudsen number is not monotonic. For case B, the Poiseuille number is decreased by increasing each of the mixed convection parameter, the Knudsen number, and the channel aspect ratio.  相似文献

A composite liquid crystalline elastomer is designed, combining main-chain and side-chain mesogenic polymers in the network, and resulting in micro-phase separated regions of nematic and smectic ordering in the macroscopically homogeneous elastomer. A range of different fractions of the components is explored, from fully nematic main-chain system, across to fully smectic side-chain elastomer. Thermal phase transitions of both phases coexisting in the material are detected by calorimetry, and the nematic/smectic structure investigated by X-ray scattering. The tensile stress–strain data reveal the key effect of such a multi-phase composite, where the nematic fraction adds ductility while the smectic fraction increases the modulus and mechanical stiffness. Varying the composition, the authors are able to optimize the mechanical properties of this material type.  相似文献

In the present article, higher-order shear and normal deformable plate theory together with modified couple stress theory are developed to study the bending analysis of thick functionally graded rectangular micro-plates. One material length scale parameter is used for capturing the size effects. Utilizing the variational approach and also a principle of virtual displacement, a new form of equilibrium equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are derived. It is assumed that material properties vary through the thickness according to the power law function. Finally, an analytical solution for the bending problem of a simply supported FG rectangular micro-plate is presented.  相似文献

In the present work, biofuel derived from industrial fish processing industry waste is used in diesel engines to study its suitability . Biofuel from industry fish waste is produced through catalytic cracking, and its quality has been improved through distillation. A single cylinder 4.5 kW at 1500 rpm was used to find the suitability of biofuel and undistilled biofuel in diesel engine. Experimental results show that the brake thermal efficiency of biofuel and undistilled biofuel is similar. Brake thermal efficiency for diesel, undistilled biofuel and biofuel is 29.98, 32.12 and 32.4%, respectively, at 80% load. Carbon monoxide, unburnt hydrocarbons, particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen emissions increase with undistilled biofuel compared to biofuel. There is a small reduction in carbon dioxide emission with undistilled biofuel compared to biofuel. Even though the cylinder pressure is high with undistilled biofuel, the intensity of premixed combustion is lower than distilled biofuel. The ignition delay and combustion duration increase with undistilled biofuel. Finally, it is concluded that the fuel derived from fish processing industry waste can be used as a fuel for diesel engine after distillation.  相似文献

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in order to identify abnormalities in the brain. Indeed, cortical atrophy, a powerful biomarker for AD, can be detected using structural MRI (sMRI), but it cannot detect impairment in the integrity of the white matter (WM) preceding cortical atrophy. The early detection of these changes is made possible by the novel MRI modality known as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). In this study, we integrate DTI and sMRI as complementary imaging modalities for the early detection of AD in order to create an effective computer-assisted diagnosis tool. The fused Bag-of-Features (BoF) with Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF) and modified AlexNet convolutional neural network (CNN) are utilized to extract local and deep features. This is applied to DTI scalar metrics (fractional anisotropy and diffusivity metric) and segmented gray matter images from T1-weighted MRI images. Then, the classification of local unimodal and deep multimodal features is first performed using support vector machine (SVM) classifiers. Then, the majority voting technique is adopted to predict the final decision from the ensemble SVMs. The study is directed toward the classification of AD versus mild cognitive impairment (MCI) versus cognitively normal (CN) subjects. Our proposed method achieved an accuracy of 98.42% and demonstrated the robustness of multimodality imaging fusion.  相似文献

Relevance feedback (RF) is a technique that allows to enrich an initial query according to the user feedback. The goal is to express more precisely the user’s needs. Some open issues arise when considering semi-structured documents like XML documents. They are mainly related to the form of XML documents which mix content and structure information and to the new granularity of information. Indeed, the main objective of XML retrieval is to select relevant elements in XML documents instead of whole documents. Most of the RF approaches proposed in XML retrieval are simple adaptation of traditional RF to the new granularity of information. They usually enrich queries by adding terms extracted from relevant elements instead of terms extracted from whole documents. In this article, we describe a new approach of RF that takes advantage of two sources of evidence: the content and the structure. We propose to use the query term proximity to select terms to be added to the initial query and to use generic structures to express structural constraints. Both sources of evidence are used in different combined forms. Experiments were carried out within the INEX evaluation campaign and results show the effectiveness of our approaches.  相似文献
