Correlations between the macroscopic bulk polymer properties storage modulus (E′) and loss modulus (E″) and the microscopic property of cross-polarization as represented by the time constant TCH have been established for a series of polyurethane elastomers. The dependence of E′, E″, and TCH as a function of molecular weight, rigid domain concentration, and temperature are graphically presented as a series of log plots. An experimental relationship is presented that shows that the distribution of motions of the flexible domains appears to be the major factor in the success of these correlations.  相似文献

A stability criterion is developed for linear, asynchronous multirate sampled-data systems. Such systems typically include a linear, time variant, continuous-time plant and several unsynchronized digital controllers. The analysis method uses a time-domain approach based on the closed-loop state transition matrix. This study examined whether chronic stress impairs the immune system's capacity to respond to hormonal signals that terminate inflammation. Fifty healthy adults were studied; half were parents of cancer patients, and half were parents of healthy children. Parents of cancer patients reported more psychological distress than parents of healthy children. They also had flatter diurnal slopes of cortisol secretion, primarily because of reduced output during the morning hours. There was also evidence that chronic stress impaired the immune system's response to anti-inflammatory signals: The capacity of a synthetic glucocorticoid hormone to suppress in vitro production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 was diminished among parents of cancer patients. Samples of plasticized poly(vinyl butyral-co-vinyl alcohol) (PVB) are found to exhibit multiple thermal transitions as observed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Arrhenius plots using DSC and DMA data suggest that two of the transitions are glass-type ones. Variable temperature solid-state 13C-NMR experiments show a temperature-dependent line-broadening pattern for all PVB backbone carbons with maximum broadening at 55°C or at about 50°C above the second-order-type transitions α1 and α2 as measured by DSC. Using Arrhenius plots, the NMR transition is found to best correlate with α1, which is consistent with glass transition behavior. The solid-state NMR spectra also show that vinyl alcohol tacticity remains unresolved up to a temperature of about 95°C, beyond which line narrowing begins to occur. High-temperature thermal transitions are also observed by DSC and DMA, which suggest that the onset of motion involving vinyl alcohol sequences may be responsible for these transitions.  相似文献

Individuals with one aerodigestive tract malignancy have a high incidence of second primary aerodigestive tumors. The mechanism for this field effect has not been determined. We studied an individual with widespread dysplastic changes in the respiratory epithelium but no overt carcinoma. The entire tracheobronchial tree obtained at autopsy was embedded in paraffin, and bronchial epithelial cells were isolated by microdissection. DNA extracted from the microdissected cells was analyzed for point mutations in the p53 tumor suppressor gene. A single, identical point mutation consisting of a G:C to T:A transversion in codon 245 was identified in bronchial epithelium from 7 of 10 sites in both lungs. Epithelium at sites containing the p53 mutation was morphologically abnormal, exhibiting squamous metaplasia and mild to moderate atypia. No invasive tumor was found in the tracheobronchial tree or any other location. Cells from peripheral blood, kidney, liver, and lymph node exhibited no abnormality in the p53 gene. The widespread presence of a single somatic p53 point mutation in the bronchi of a smoker suggests that a single progenitor bronchial epithelial clone may expand to populate broad areas of the bronchial mucosa-a novel mechanism for field carcinogenesis in the respiratory epithelium that may be of importance in assessing individuals for risk of a second primary tumor as well as in devising effective strategies for chemoprevention of lung cancer.  相似文献

PURPOSE: National Wilms' Tumor Study (NWTS)-4 was designed to evaluate the efficacy, toxicity, and cost of the administration of different regimens for the treatment of Wilms' tumor (WT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between August 6, 1986 and September 1, 1994, 905 previously untreated children aged younger than 16 years with stage II favorable histology (FH) WT (low-risk [LR]), stages III to IV FH WT, or stages I to IV clear-cell sarcoma of the kidney (high-risk[HR]) were randomized after the completion of 6 months of chemotherapy to discontinue (short) or continue for 9 additional months (long) treatment with chemotherapy regimens that included vincristine and either divided-dose (standard [STD]) courses (5 days) or single-dose (pulse-intensive [PI]) treatment with dactinomycin. HR patients also received either divided-dose (STD) courses (3 days) or single-dose (PI) treatment with doxorubicin. RESULTS: The 4-year relapse-free survival (RFS) rates after the second randomization for LR patients were 83.7% for the 190 patients treated with short and 88.2% for the 187 patients treated with long chemotherapy (P = .11). The 4-year RFS rates after the second randomization for HR FH patients were 89.7% for the 256 patients treated with short and 88.8% for the 246 patients treated with long chemotherapy (P = .87). The charge for treatment with the short PI treatment regimens for all children with stages I through IV FH WT was approximately one half of that with the long STD treatment regimens. CONCLUSION: The short administration schedule for the treatment of children with WT is no less effective than the long administration schedule and can be administered at a substantially lower total treatment cost.  相似文献

A structure/property relationship is developed between the dynamic storage modulus, E′, and the cross-polarization time constant TCH for a series of polyurethane elastomers. The correlations made are based on the standard linear solids model (SLSM) and on the concept that TCH is modulated by near static molecular motions. The use of the SLSM to describe the main viscoelastic range of these polyurethanes is contrasted to previous models used to develop similar correlations. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Focused ion beam (FIB) sputtering is used to shape a variety of cutting tools with dimensions in the 15–100 μm range and cutting edge radii of curvature of 40 nm. The shape of each microtool is controlled to a pre-specified geometry that includes rake and relief features. We demonstrate tools having rectangular, triangular, and other complex-shaped face designs. A double-triangle tip on one tool is unique and demonstrates the versatility of the fabrication process. The FIB technique allows observation of the tool during fabrication, and, thus, reproducible features are generated with sub-micron precision. Tools are made from tungsten carbide, high-speed tool steel, and single crystal diamond. Application of FIB-shaped tools in ultra-precision microgrooving tests shows that the cross-section of a machined groove is an excellent replication of the microtool face. Microgrooves on 40–150 μm pitch are cut into 3 mm diameter polymer rods, for groove arc lengths greater than 12 cm. The surface finish of machined features is also reported; groove roughness (Ra) is typically less than 0.2 μm. Ultra-precision machining of cylindrical substrates is extended to make bound metal microcoils having feature sizes of 20–40 μm.  相似文献

Peat samples from three locations in Quebec, Canada, were characterized by 13C CP/MAS n.m.r. spectroscopy. The n.m.r. analysis indicates that the peats contain a significant amount of unaltered plant components including cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, waxes and resins. Integration of specific regions of the spectra can give semi-quantitative estimates of some of these plant components and, in limited cases, information about the degree of decomposition can be obtained from the 13C CP/MAS n.m.r. spectrum. Dipolar dephasing experiments and difference spectroscopy were found to be valuable techniques for spectra assignments and enhancement of compositional differences.  相似文献

The evolution of residual stresses found within a silicon carbide/silicon carbide (SiC/SiC) ceramic matrix composite through thermal treatments was investigated using Raman microspectroscopy. Constituent stress states were measured before, during, and after exposures ranging from 900 to 1300°C for varying times between 1 and 60 minutes. Silicon carbide particles in the as-received condition exhibited average hydrostatic tensile stresses of approximately 300 MPa when measured at room temperature before and after heat treatment. The room temperature Raman profile of the silicon matrix was altered in both shape and location with heat treatment cycles due to increasing activation of boron within the silicon lattice as heat treatment temperatures increased. By accounting for boron activation in the silicon–boron system, little to no permanent change of any constituent stresses were observed, and the silicon matrix subsequently exhibited a complimentary average hydrostatic compressive stress of approximately 300 MPa at room temperature, measured before and after heat treatment. This result builds upon previous literature and offers increased insight into boron activation phenomena measured through Raman spectroscopy methods.  相似文献
