Possibilities and extension of XRD material response analysis in failure research for the advanced evaluation of the damage level of Hertzian loaded components

Due to clearly distinguishable damage symptoms, it is differentiated between the surface and sub‐surface failure mode of rolling bearings. Material states red out by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) residual stress measurements point to a variety of loading conditions especially at raceway surfaces that are associated with several competing failure mechanisms. The corresponding lifetime reduction can range from the lower fatigue strength region to material ratcheting in extreme cases. Relevant position of the microstructural changes and nature of the failure mechanisms are characterized. The time alteration of the XRD material parameters measured at or near the surface and at the depth of the maximum equivalent stress correlates, in a different manner, with the statistical parameter of the 10 % bearing life. Both failure modes are illustrated by concrete examples. Contaminated lubricant and boundary lubrication, which represent practically important surface‐induced failures, are discussed in more detail. Gray staining, i.e. shallow pitting, often occurs without distinct indication of global material aging by means of XRD characteristics. Here, scanning electron microscopy observations and electron microprobe analyses point to corrosion fatigue as acting surface failure mechanism. The interaction between material and lubricant under complex loading regimes particularly of mixed friction and corrosion opens further failure research areas in the field of tribology.     

Einsatz moderner Informationstechnik im militärischen Bereich: Für den Verteidiger notwendig und verantwortbar

Zusammenfassung Nach Pädagogen, Ärzten etc. haben sich nun auch Informatiker für den Frieden organisiert. So sehr sich der Verfasser mit den Zielen von Friedensinitiativen identifizieren kann, so sieht er doch die Gefahr, daß diese Bemühungen insgesamt eher destabilisierend und damit kontraproduktiv wirken. Bevor im folgenden Beitrag dieser Gedankengang weiter ausgeführt wird, soll zunächst versucht werden, die Bereiche darzustellen, in denen bislang und in absehbarer Zukunft Rechensysteme in modern ausgerüsteten Streitkräften eingesetzt werden, wobei besonders auf die Situation in Mitteleuropa und speziell auf die Bundeswehr eingegangen wird. Es wird aufgezeigt, daß gerade der Verteidiger auf moderne Führungs- und Aufklärungssysteme angewiesen ist, insbesondere in der kritischen Anfangsphase eines Konflikts, und daß die Vertreter alternativer Verteidigungsstrukturen, die den Schwerpunkt auf defensiv ausgerüstete Verbände mit struktureller Nichtangriffsfähigkeit legen, wie auch offizielle Programme der NATO zur Verbesserung der konventionellen Verteidigungsfähigkeit auf moderne Technologie setzen. In diesem Zusammenhang wird ein Forschungsprojekt vorgestellt, das zum Ziel hat, die Wirksamkeit derartiger reaktiver, rüstungskontrollfreundlicher Verteidigungs- und Bewaffnungsstrukturen sowie moderner Technologie im Gefecht der verbundenen Waffen zu untersuchen. Entsprechend der Themenstellung dieses Sonderheftes soll schließlich auch auf moralisch-ethische Aspekte des Einsatzes moderner Informationstechnik für die Verteidigungsplanung eingegangen werden. Dies geschieht in der Form von Thesen, um die Aussagen als persönliche Meinung des Verfassers besonders zu kennzeichnen.

Purifying Bodies,Translating Race: The Lantern Slides of Sir Everard im Thurn

In 1893 the colonial administrator and anthropologist, Everard Ferdinand im Thurn, gave an illustrated lecture, entitled Anthropological Uses of the Camera, in which he used more than thirty lantern slides. Im Thurn argued that, in addition to photographing the measured physical body, ‘primitive folk’ as ‘living beings’ in their ‘natural conditions’ could also be captured on film for the advancement of anthropological science. Although this lecture has been seen as representing a humanistic turn in anthropological photography, little attention has been given to the ways in which lantern slide technology participated in and facilitated this shift. The present paper demonstrates that im Thurn used the lantern slide to re‐assert and re‐define the scope of anthropological inquiry, altering the connections between morality and race and culture and nature. Lantern slides not only permitted heightened public visibility of particular selections of the body but also normalized classifications of race, nature, and culture. By situating lantern slides as photographic translations that travel through various spaces, we can begin to understand how the lantern slide was enlisted by im Thurn to uphold anthropology as a science, to alter what constituted a proper anthropological subject for the photograph, and ultimately to legitimize himself as a scholar.
