A test of the fail-safe N for self-help programs.

A meta-analysis of published studies on the clinical efficacy of selected self-help programs (F. Scogin et al; see record 1990-15222-001) indicated that such conditions were more effective than no-treatment controls. Calculation of a fail-safe N showed that 53 nonsignificant studies would have to exist to render the conclusions of the meta-analysis invalid. Results indicate that unpublished research is unlikely to threaten the validity of the original meta-analysis. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Frank A. Beach’s unpublished textbook on comparative psychology.

At his death in 1988, Frank A. Beach left unpublished a textbook in comparative psychology that he had written in the late 1950s. In it, Beach contrasted comparative behavioral science, as he viewed it, with both ethology and classical human-oriented psychology. He provided a solid background of zoological principles and focused on orienting attitudes. Beach emphasized a functionalist approach to behavior, stressing the role of behavior in the natural lives of animals. It is argued that much of comparative psychology has developed along the lines that Beach advocated at that time but that that development may have been much smoother had the textbook been published. Discusses Freud's unpublished 5-yr treatment of the male patient "E.," whose therapy provides numerous examples of Freud's developing theories of psychodynamics and the role of infantile sexuality. The resonances between E.'s therapy and Freud's self-analysis suggest a number of conjectures about the role of oedipal and pre-oedipal issues in the construction of psychoanalysis. The use of material from E.'s therapy in The Interpretation of Dreams (Freud, 1900) links E.'s therapy to Freud's own anxiety-neurotic difficulties in the late 1890s and to the nascent theories of neurotic etiology, psychoanalytic interpretation, and transference.
