文学伦理学批评把伦理意义上的人看成是"一种斯芬克斯因子的存在",由人性因子与兽性因子组成。文章运用文学伦理学批评方法,通过对《哈利·波特》系列中哈利和伏地魔两个主要人物在社会化过程中做出的伦理选择及其背后的动因进行考察,认为哈利与伏地魔被建构成一对具有同源结构的镜像人物,其中一个是"善"的体现,另一个是"恶"的化身。他们二者你中有我、我中有你,是一种相互寄托、相互依存的共生关系。这对相互对立又相互依存的镜像人物,恰如一个硬币的正反两面,可以象征性地看成是一个人兽同体的斯芬克斯因子:伏地魔代表斯芬克斯的兽身,象征着被欲望驱动、表现为自然意志的兽性因子;而哈利则代表斯芬克斯的人头,象征着受伦理意识控制、表现为理性意志的人性因子。在小说结尾,哈利所代表的正义力量对伏地魔所代表的邪恶力量的胜利,隐喻着哈利人格发展过程中人性因子对兽性因子的胜利,即人性因子有效地制约了兽性因子,使他获得理性的成熟,走向人格的完善。

The reviewer maintains that this work stands in a class by itself, following, as it does, with studious care and curiosity, the unfolding of Sullivan's life from 1892 to 1949. Perry discusses various aspects of the indigenously American character of Sullivan's conceptions. It is noted that a new generation of psychoanalysts has emerged since 1949, and places this biography against the backdrop of the evolving shift in American social thought, cultural mood, and psychic experiences since the Second World War. It is argued that Perry's work is most useful here. For the first time (to the reviewer's knowledge), does a biography of Sullivan give the historical sense of his environed unfolding through the various abrupt changes and unaccounted fractures in his own life, and put his conceptions into a developing nexus with the cultural period of their occurrence. This brief article is a reaction to Kilburg and Levinson's (2008; see record 2008-03845-003) important article on the coaching and professional perspectives of Harry Levinson. Levinson's 50 years of seminal psychoanalytic thinking in business and organizations has shone a bright light in some very dark corners of work environments and executive suites. Reports the death of Harry Goichi Yamaguchi (1921-2002) and notes his contributions to to teaching, research, and clinical supervision and research.
