Purifying Bodies,Translating Race: The Lantern Slides of Sir Everard im Thurn

In 1893 the colonial administrator and anthropologist, Everard Ferdinand im Thurn, gave an illustrated lecture, entitled Anthropological Uses of the Camera, in which he used more than thirty lantern slides. Im Thurn argued that, in addition to photographing the measured physical body, ‘primitive folk’ as ‘living beings’ in their ‘natural conditions’ could also be captured on film for the advancement of anthropological science. Although this lecture has been seen as representing a humanistic turn in anthropological photography, little attention has been given to the ways in which lantern slide technology participated in and facilitated this shift. The present paper demonstrates that im Thurn used the lantern slide to re‐assert and re‐define the scope of anthropological inquiry, altering the connections between morality and race and culture and nature. Lantern slides not only permitted heightened public visibility of particular selections of the body but also normalized classifications of race, nature, and culture. By situating lantern slides as photographic translations that travel through various spaces, we can begin to understand how the lantern slide was enlisted by im Thurn to uphold anthropology as a science, to alter what constituted a proper anthropological subject for the photograph, and ultimately to legitimize himself as a scholar.     

Beyond low-level activity: on a "non-radioactive" gas mantle

Gas mantles for camping gas lanterns sometimes contain thorium compounds. During the last years, the use of thorium-free gas mantles has become more and more popular due to the avoidance of a radioactive heavy metal. We investigated a gas mantle type that is declared to be "non-radioactive" and that can be bought in Austria at the moment. Methods used were Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), gamma-spectroscopy, and Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC). We found massive thorium contents of up to 259 mg per gas mantle. Leaching experiments showed that only 0.4% of the Th but approximately 90% of the decay products of (232)Th can be leached under conditions simulating sucking and chewing with human saliva. In this paper, the investigation of these gas mantles including the consideration of the environmental hazard caused by disposed mantles and the health hazard for unsuspecting consumers is presented and legal consequences are discussed for this fraud.

基于Proteus的电子电路设计探究

电子电路设计的一个重要环节,就包括电路功能实验调试,在具体设计中为了达到简化电路设计进程及缩短电路设计周期的目的,文章在设计分析典型函数信号发生器,四路彩灯（数字电视）和数显直流稳压电源时,使用了Proteus软件。进行分析设计之后得出,将Proteus运用在电子工程设计领域中的电子电路设计,能够达到省时省力省财目标的同时,还能够达到降低设计成本和提高设计效率的最终目标。     

基于光子灯笼的星地湍流链路耦合效率实验

为了研究基于光子灯笼的模式分集接收系统在星地链路中对大气湍流的补偿作用。采用平行光管模拟星地下行链路的平行光,使用30cm口径的接收望远镜进行了演示验证实验。实验结果表明,采用光子灯笼的接收系统的基模比单模光纤的接收功率大4dB左右,而光子灯笼的3个模式总接收功率比单模光纤的接收功率大5dB左右。采用光子灯笼接收之后,中断概率下降39%以上。     

采用低安装高度LED灯具的道路照明

通过对LED护栏灯的设计和实际使用效果分析表明,LED能够满足该应用场合的照明要求并突破传统、节约成本、简便安全、节能环保、无眩光,强化照明效果等.同样的设计理念也适用于扩展到道路照明领域,这将大大推动低安装高度照明方式的横向发展,为照明方式多元化提供了新方向.     

基于PLC技术LED路灯控制系统设计

目前人们对路灯的智能控制水平要求越来越高,针对这种情况,设计了一套基于电力载波通信(PowerLine Communication,PLC)技术的LED路灯控制系统。采用电力载波芯片MI200E结合HOLTEK单片机的控制方式,完成了集中控制器和单灯控制器的软硬件设计,实现了LED远程开关灯、调光等控制。本系统具有控制简单、稳定性好等优点,经过一定的完善可以运用于实际的LED路灯控制系统中。     

3G技术在LED路灯照明智能监控系统中的应用

利用3G技术的网络覆盖广和传输速率快的特点,提出了一种基于3G无线通信技术的LED路灯照明智能化监控系统.系统主要包括智能控制终端模块、3G区域(路段)集中控制器和远程监控中心,智能控制终端模块通过电力载波通信与集中控制器组网,集中控制器通过3G无线通信网络与监控中心或便携式移动终端进行数据交换,实现对路灯的实时在线监控.该系统具有技术先进、结构简单、通信实时准确、控制范围广、系统容量大等优点,提高了路灯照明系统的智能化控制水平和应用范围,前景广阔.     

Five Cent Fantasies: Photographic Experimentation in Illustrated Song Slides

This article examines the production and consumption of illustrated song lantern slides. Motivated by the commercial success of Tin Pan Alley songs, slide companies began illustrating songs with live action photography in the early years of the twentieth century. Shown between reels of film, the slides were an attraction themselves and an integral part of the filmgoers’ experience. The photographic experimentation in these slides, especially that of the firm Scott and Van Altena, is surprisingly novel. They frequently use multiple photograph negatives to exaggerate spatial and scale differences or frame narrative scenes. The author concludes that the layering and scale differences frequently seen in these slides allowed the company to expedite manufacture by recycling photographic images and also appealed to a popular taste for visual tricks in modern American visual culture. Although the imagery was nostalgic and conventional, the compositions challenged the viewer to see in a new, fragmented way. The often surreal effects show that the line between avant-garde experimental photography and commercial photography was not so clearly drawn.     

探析灯笼文化在产品设计中的传承与发展

目的主要阐述当代产品设计领域中蕴含的灯笼文化,以及如何通过产品设计领域实现传统文化的传承发展。方法通过对传统灯笼文化的内涵理解与设计解读,结合与灯笼文化有关的当代国内外优秀设计案例,提出"形意相通"在灯笼设计与文化传承中的重要性,最终对于灯笼文化如何借助现代产品设计而传承发展提出建议。结论产品设计师应该遵循"形意相通"的原则,从多个设计角度传承灯笼文化,在符合时代审美性与功用性的条件下发展创新灯笼文化。
