Industrial Text and French Neo-structuralism

Parallel to, and to some degree inreaction to French poststructuralisttheorization (as championed by Derrida,Foucault, and Lacan, among others) is a Frenchneo-structuralism built directly on theachievements of structuralism using electronicmeans. This paper examines some exemplaryapproaches to text analysis in thisneo-structuralist vein: SATOR's topoidictionary, the WinBrill POS tagger andFrançois Rastier's interpretativesemantics. I consider how a computer-assisted``Wissenschaft' accumulation of expertisecomplements the neo-structuralist approach.Ultimately, electronic critical studies will bedefined by their strategic position at theintersection of the two chief technologiesshaping our society: the new informationprocessing technology of computers and therepresentational techniques that haveaccumulated for centuries in texts.Understanding how these two informationmanagement paradigms complement each other is akey issue for the humanities, for computerscience, and vital to industry, even beyond thenarrow realm of the language industries. Thedirection of critical studies, a small planetlong orbiting in only rarefied academiccircles, will be radically altered by the sheersize of the economic stakes implied by a newkind of text, the industrial text, thetechnological heart of an information society.     

Adverse impact: Is it a viable concept?

It appears that those federal agencies responsible for enforcement persist in the belief that a given test score can mean one thing in one subgroup and something else in another and/or that inferences from a set of test scores can be valid for one subgroup but not for another. First surfacing in early agency regulations in connection with the now discontinued "differential validity" requirement, the belief still manifests itself in the concepts of "unfairness" and "adverse impact." Furthermore, the determination of the presence or absence of adverse impact on the basis of the impact ratio involves numerous statistical and measurement issues. 梁邦正先生做为湖北现代陶艺发展进程最早的见证者和亲历者之一,与其他老一辈陶艺家在拓展现代陶艺创作和影响带动中青年陶艺家方面做出了有益的探索和贡献。通过对他近30年各个时期代表作的分析,不难发现其作品题材多样、主题鲜明且大多作品有着丰富的文本背景,风格或含蓄内敛、幽默诙谐或带有强烈的讽喻性和社会批判色彩。无论何种题材、何种手法始终贯穿着一条主线即对传统文化的眷恋和当代观念的表达。

针对艺术类大学生批评鉴赏能力的培养,通过同伴反馈及教师反馈相结合的方式,结合现代新型媒体,如QQ群、网络博客、微博等,让学生参与到对同学的艺术作品创作效果反馈中,通过这种开放式的反馈训练,增强了学生交流、参与、合作意识和艺术鉴赏与批评能力的提高,同时教师的反馈介入,使得学生的艺术审美及批评更加客观,更加系统化、理论化和学术化。     

Worker control: A reply to Ronan.

Argues that W. W. Ronan (1980) presents a one-sided picture of "work force control" by the "entrepreneur–capitalist–management group" and discredits the contributions of many psychologists to workers' well-being. Ronan's contentions that (1) psychological concepts are applied to programs that are motivated by management's desire to avoid unionization, (2) psychological experiments and interventions are unilaterally imposed on workers by management, and (3) economic benefits of psychological interventions should be shared equally with workers are discussed. It is concluded that psychologists have every reason to be proud of their colleagues' contributions to making companies more profitable while improving the work environment for employees.
