Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology: Judith V. Torney-Purta.

Judith V. Torney-Purta, recipient of the Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology, is cited for leadership of rigorous research on the development of democratic attitudes and civic knowledge among adolescents from more than 30 countries that has served as a catalyst for education and youth policy reform. Torney-Purta led research projects that are prime examples of international collaboration. She drew on these experiences in contributing to an initiative on international collaboration among behavioral and social scientists sponsored by the U.S. National Committee for the International Union of Psychological Science. Along with the citation, a biography and selected bibliography of Torney-Purta's works are presented. Also included is her paper, entitled "International psychological research that matters for policy and practice," a version of which she presented at the American Psychological Association's annual convention. The Culture of the Copy

Is copying necessarily a bad thing? Theorists from Walter Benjamin to Richard Dawkins, and from Judith Butler to Homi Bhabha, have suggested not. Conversely, Kevin Nute , Professor of Architecture at the University of Oregon, puts the case for the present over the future and the past. To enhance experiences of the present, he describes how architects can harness the effects of changing temporal and weather conditions – sun and shadow, wind and rain. Design can heighten the sensory stimuli these conditions generate, keeping us ‘in the moment’ while still enjoying the comfort of being indoors.     

Judith Rodin: Early Career Awards for 1977.

Judith Rodin received an Early Career Award for major theoretical contributions to our understanding of the relationship between obesity and general sensitivity to external stimulation, and for seminal studies on altruism, on aging and the effects of control or helplessness, and on the consequences of overcrowding. Rodin's work, in collaboration with Stanley Schachter, places human obesity in a broader theoretical context involving information processing correlates and potential physiological mechanisms. Her eclectic contributions on altruism, overcrowding, and control brilliantly combine field and laboratory procedures, illustrating the implications of social psychological principles and phenomena for an understanding of human problems and suggesting directions for their remedy. 100 Year City (Maribor): The Virtual Concourse Reframed

For interactivity, the virtual world so often relies on a physical component, but how might virtual spaces be made more tangible as spatial environments for exchange? Under the direction of architect and RMIT University professor Tom Kovac, in 2012 the 100 Year City project rose to this challenge as part of the Maribor European Capital of Culture programme. Here, Guest-Editor and Deputy Curator of the project, Fleur Watson , describes how this ‘super studio’ incites cross-disciplinary exchange and the sharing of progressive design ideas for sustainable blueprints for our cities. It is an initiative that is to be continued under Kovac's directorship with the 100 Year City-themed Malaysian Biennale in the summer of 2015.
