We investigated cues that mediate the aggregation behavior of immature pentatomid bugs by using nymphs of six different pentatomid bug species (Nezara viridula, Acrosternum hilare, Chlorochroa ligata, Chlorochroa sayi, Thyanta pallidovirens, and Euschistus conspersus). When first instars of any two species were put together in a Petri dish, they readily formed heterospecific aggregations similar to their natural conspecific aggregations. The chemical profiles of first and second instar nymphs of each species were determined by solvent extraction with pentane, followed by GC-MS analysis. Immature bugs of the different species had some compounds in common, and some that were more species specific. Within a species, there were distinct differences in the profiles of compounds extracted from first and second instars. Bugs did not aggregate around untreated polysulfone beads (1 mm diam) that were glued together in groups approximating bug egg masses, suggesting that tactile cues alone were insufficient to induce aggregation. Furthermore, when tested over a range of doses, groups of polysulfone beads treated with crude whole-body extracts of bugs did not induce or maintain aggregations. However, first instar N. viridula nymphs did respond to beads treated with two of the three major components of bug extracts. 4-Oxo-(E)-2-decenal induced significant aggregations at two doses, whereas tridecane, the major component in extracts from all six species, did not, and (E)-2-decenal was repellent. The repellence of (E)-2-decenal may explain why we and previous researchers were unable to induce aggregations of first instar N. viridula using whole-body extracts.  相似文献

Adult Cosmopepla bimaculata discharge a volatile secretion from paired ventral metathoracic glands (MTG) when disturbed. Collected volatiles were similar in both sexes and consisted of n-tridecane (67%), (E)-2-decenal (12%), (E)-2-decenyl acetate (12%), (E)-2-hexenal (3%), hexyl acetate (2%), n-dodecane (2%), a tridecene isomer (1%), and n-undecane, n-tetradecane, and n-pentadecane (all <1%). In addition, undisturbed males produced a novel insect compound, (E)-8-heneicosene, whose function is unknown. The MTG secretion emerges as an enlarging droplet, which is held in place by a cuticular projection and a pleural scent area consisting of specialized rough cuticle surrounding the gland opening. Insects can selectively discharge from either the right or left gland or both glands simultaneously, can control the amount of fluid ejected, and can resorb the ejected secretion droplet back into the gland reservoir. In feeding trials, killdeer (Charadrius vociferous), starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), robins (Turdus migratorius), and anole lizards (Anolis carolinensis) rejected or demonstrated aversion to feeding on the bugs. Furthermore, bugs that lacked the secretion were more susceptible to predation than bugs with secretion, suggesting that the secretion functions in defense against predators.  相似文献

We investigated the exocrine secretions from the five nymphal instars in the southern green stink bug,Nezara viridula, by analyzing separately the contents of the three dorsal abdominal reservoirs. All DAGs 1 produced a mixture of five alkanes with 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 carbons. No differences were found between DAGs 2 and DAGs 3, for the five instars: the glands of first instars produce the same alkanes as DAGs 1,n-tridecane, traces of (E)-2-decenal, and a specific compound: (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal. In the other instars (second to fifth), (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal is absent from the secretion but another compound is present: (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal. The kinetics of production of the different compounds were studied, the maximum amounts produced occurring 36 hr after hatching. The biological function of (E)-4-oxo-2-decenal was investigated. Using olfactometry, we showed that this compound acts as an attractant and an arrestant on second instars, at physiological doses. Moreover, this semiochemical was shown to be repellent to the fire-antSolenopsis geminata, a potential predator ofN. viridula and we established the dose-response curve for the repellent activity.  相似文献

Production of the male specific compound, 6,10,13-trimethyltetra- decyl isovalerate by the predatory stink bug Eocanthecona furcellata (Wolff) was dramatically affected by rearing conditions. Male bugs kept isolated after eclosion produced an average of 1,948 ng of 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecyl isovalerate per bug, whereas male bugs reared in groups of 5–8 bugs produced an average of only 4 ng of 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecyl isovalerate per bug. Same-sex or mixed-sex pairs of bugs produced less than 50 ng per bug. Male bugs kept isolated for 1~wk and then grouped for 1~wk produced 3 ng of 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecyl isovalerate per bug, whereas male bugs grouped first and then isolated produced 135 ng of 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecyl isovalerate. A total of 11 minor components in relative amounts of less than 1% of the major 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecyl isovalerate were found in the sternal gland secretion. These included 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecanol, acetate, propionate, and butyrate esters of 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecanol, and isovalerate or valerate esters of homologs of 6,10,13-trimethyltetradecanol.  相似文献

In the predatory spined soldier bug,Podisus maculiventris, the dorsal abdominal glands are much smaller in adult females than males. Females produce a mixture of (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-hexenoic acid, benzaldehyde, and nonanal in these glands. The female dorsal abdominal gland secretion may be a close-range pheromone since the dorsal abdominal gland secretion from males has been shown to be a long-range aggregation pheromone in this species. The metathoracic scent gland secretions of male and female spined soldier bugs are apparently identical, and similar to that of other pentatomids, except for the presence of the monoterpene alcohol, linalool.Mention of a commercial product does not constitute an endorsement of this product by the USDA.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior of the stink bug Chlorochroa sayiwas studied in the laboratory. There was a sexual maturation period of about 10 days before bugs began mating. Sexually mature adult bugs engaged in courtship consisting of antennation and head-butting of the female by the male, before the female adopted a receptive posture and copulation occurred. Both sexes mated multiple times during their life-spans, with the mean duration of copulations of virgin bugs (42.3 ± 19.6 min) and experienced bugs (37.3 ± 28.4 min) being similar. Most matings were initiated in the late afternoon or evening, when pheromone production by males was greatest. Males transferred sperm and nutrients constituting about 17% of their body weight to females during mating. Three male-specific components, methyl geranate, methyl citronellate, and methyl (E)-6-2,3-dihydrofarnesoate in a ratio of 100 : 0.45 : 1.6, were first detected in volatiles collected from male bugs on green beans about 9–12 days after the final molt to the adult stage. In vertical Y-tube bioassays, females were attracted to odors from mature male bugs, and to a blend of the three male-produced components. Low numbers of females also were attracted in field trials with the three-component blend. The relatively weak attraction may be a result of other, as yet unknown cues being required in addition to the pheromone, such as visual or substrate-borne vibrational cues.  相似文献

The reproductive behaviors of the stink bugs Chlorochroa ligata and C. uhleri were studied in the laboratory. Adults of both species became sexually mature about 12–14 days after the final molt, and both sexes mated multiple times during their lifetimes. The mean duration of copulation was 54 ± 24 min for virgin bugs and 46 ± 33 min for experienced bugs for C. ligata and 78 ± 55 min for field-collected C. uhleri of unknown mating status. Male C. ligata were found to transfer a significant fraction of their body mass (19%) to females during mating. Sexually mature C. uhleri males produced three sex-specific compounds, methyl (R)-3-(E)-6-2,3-dihydrofarnesoate, methyl (2E,6E)-farnesoate, and methyl (E)-5-2,6,10-trimethyl-5,9-undecadienoate, in a ratio of 100:0.9:0.6. These three compounds were also produced by sexually mature male C. ligata in a ratio of 100:0.5:0.4. Identifications of the compounds were confirmed by synthesis. Production of the male-specific compounds peaked in late afternoon to early evening, coincident with the peak period of reproductive activity. Laboratory and field bioassays demonstrated that female bugs were attracted to odors from live males and to reconstructed blends of the male-specific compounds.  相似文献

A mixture oftrans-2-hexenal;n-tridecane (60:40, w/w), the natural combination present in the defensive secretion ofCoridius janus (Hemiptera; Pentatomidae) was shown by comparison with similar aldehyde mixtures having longer and shorter chainn-alkanes, to be the optimal combination as a fumigant and a repellent against three test insect species,Anoplolepis longipes, Sitotroga cerealella, andCulex quinquefasciatus. Toxic values obtained for the three insects, respectively: 1/LC50, 1.72, 4.54, and 6.66 ppm while repellencies were 63%, 50%, and 69%. This study revealed that amongt-2-hexenal:n-alkane combinations those with medium carbon chains,viz C-11 and C-12, also possessed high toxicities and repellencies comparable to that of the natural combination while those with shorter and longern-alkanes possessed lower activity. Toxicities and repellencies ofn-alkane series were only moderate to low showing highest toxic values forn-tridecane at 1/LC50, 0.39, 2.32, and 2.32 ppm and repellencies at 31%, 30%, and 32% for the three test insects, respectively. This series, nevertheless, showed similar variation, medium length chains, C-11, C-12, and C-13 showing comparatively higher activity than other alkanes of shorter and longer chains. This study also revealed that the fumigant property of both alkane and aldehyde are of equal importance while repellency is heavily dependent on the aldehyde.  相似文献

In addition to the primarily defensive metathoracic glands, adult Pentatomoidea possess a pair of active exocrine glands that open between the III and IV abdominal tergites. In the southern green stink bug,Nezara viridula, and other phytophagous species examined, the glands are small (< 10 g secretion/individual) and of approximately equal size in both sexes. In some, but not all, of the predaceous pentatomids (Asopinae), the III-IV dorsal abdominal glands are small in females (< 10 g secretion/individual) and extremely large in males (>500 g secretion/individual). Using a GC-MS system, the secretion from both males and females ofN. viridula (Pentatominae) was found to contain (E)-2-hexenal, hexanal, 1-hexanol, andn-tridecane. Females contained about three times moren-tridecane than males. The capacious glands ofPodisus maculiventris (Asopinae) males produce (E)-2-hexenal, benzyl alcohol, -terpineol, linalool, terpinen-4-ol, andcis-piperitol. The composition of the previously unanalyzed secretions from the adult III-IV dorsal abdominal glands is compared and contrasted to that of secretions from the metathoricic gland, and the role of coexisting exocrine glands in adult Heteroptera is discussed.  相似文献

The two-spotted stinkbug, Perillus bioculatus, is a predator of the Colorado potato beetle (CPB), Leptinotarsa decemlineata. Behavioral tests revealed that P. bioculatus is attracted to potato plants, Solanum tuberosum L. (Solanaceae), infested by the CPB. Electroantennograms from the antennae of P. bioculatus were recorded in response to compounds present in the headspace of CPB-infested potato plants. (Z)-3-Hexen-1-ol and 2-phenylethanol elicited the highest EAG amplitudes. Linalool, 4,8-dimethyl-1,3(E),7-nonatriene, nonanal, decanal, and (R)-(+)-limonene evoked lower EAG amplitudes. The major headspace components -caryophyllene and -selinene produced only weak EAG responses. Antennal sensitivity of the CPB to (Z)-3-hexen-1-ol was higher than that of P. bioculatus, whereas the stinkburg was more sensitive to 2-phenylethanol, -caryophyllene, (R)-(+)-limonene, and decanal. Among these compounds, 2-phenylethanol is of special interest since it was observed to be emitted by potato foliage only after being damaged by CPBs.  相似文献
