Efficient utilization of silanol group in rice husk to promote the synthesis of Ni-phyllosilicate for CO2 methanation

It is a challenge to prepare Ni-phyllosilicate catalysts deriving from the reaction of nickel salts and biomass-based silica with high Ni contents. In order to efficiently synthesize nickel phyllosilicate, the acid-treated rice husk without calcination (P-R) was directly used as the raw material. The as-synthesized Ni-phyllosilicate (N/P-R) exhibited high nickel content of 46.7 wt% owing to utilization of the abundant silanol group in the fresh rice husk. On the contrary, the Ni content of Ni-phyllosilicate sample (N/R–S) prepared using the calcinated rice husk-based silica was only 4.8 wt% because of the loss of silanol group during calcination process. As a result, N/P-R displayed much higher catalytic activity for CO₂ methanation than N/R–S. It was found that the silanol group was in favour of forming the important intermediate Si(OH)₄, and thereby facilitated the formation of nickel phyllosilicate. In addition, the N/P-R catalyst demonstrated superior stability and excellent anti-sintering ability in the long lifetime test. In short, the proposed method in this work could not only efficiently synthesize nickel phyllosilicate with high Ni content, but also reduce energy consumption and operation steps compared to the one prepared using biomass-based silica.     

Present status and future prospects of PV activities in Japan

The photovoltaic (PV) power systems in Japan made great strides in the past decade. The PV industry in the 1990s greatly depended on the research projects and dissemination programs carried out by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. However, the industrial structure for full-scale deployment of the PV system is currently being established by the manufacturers’ continuous efforts to reduce the PV system cost and the government’s consecutive supports to create the initial market. It is expected that the synergetic effect of the cost reduction and incentives for introduction will activate the PV industry and its market more and more toward achieving 5000 MW of the capacity in FY 2010.

Affective Experience Measurement in Outdoor Environment via Machine Visual Cognition

Outdoor environments with quality landscapes can benefit people’s physical and mental health. Real-time assessment on individuals’ environmental affective experience can improve the scientism in measuring the quality of outdoor environments. Existing measurement methods are often insufficient for the cases of a larger site area or sample size. The machine visual cognition of Artificial Intelligence can realize the recognition of facial expressions and the changes in video images, which supports high-precision and long-cycle measurements on individuals’ affective experience in outdoor environments. Taking an urban community square as the study site, this research simultaneously collects participants’ facial data from video images and their electrodermal activity data, wherein Convolutional Neural Network algorithm model is trained with a deep learning algorithm, i.e. codec–SVM optimized model, whose reliability is tested through an additional experiment. The research reveals that: 1) The accuracy rate of the main and additional experiments in measuring individuals’ affective experience is 82.01% and 65.08%, respectively; 2) The additional experiment verifies the application potential of the codec–SVM optimized model; And 3) the model works more effective for outdoor scenarios with varying usage behaviors and open views. Therefore, machine visual cognition can be used for emotion measurement in a larger site area or sample size and contributes to the effectiveness of landscape optimization efforts, especially as an instrumental tool to study the affective experience of the ones who have communication or reading disability. The findings also demonstrate the model’s great potential in building Smart Cities with refined public services.     

21世纪中国油气资源远景展望

针对目前对中国石油工业发展的悲观论调 ,作者提出了相反的观点。由于有大量不同类型沉积有巨厚中生界和新生界沉积地层的盆地 ,中国大陆应赋存大量的石油和天然气。中国盆地最重要的特点是它们都经历了多期构造运动和不同类型盆地叠加。这一特点与其它国家不同 ,所以决定了中国石油勘探历程的长期性 ,复杂性和艰巨性。因此 ,坚持持续勘探就有可能获得突破。按照最保守的估计 ,中国的原油剩余可采储量可以一直开采到 2 0 6 3年 ,而天然气则可以延续至 2 2世纪。尽管如此 ,与全球的石油工业同步 ,中国大部分的盆地基本处于勘探的早 中期阶段。与发达国家 (以美国为例 )相比 ,中国的石油工业还相当年轻 ,应从发达国家的石油工业发展历史中吸取经验和教训。科技的发展能够使石油工业快速发展。目前 ,高新技术的应用对石油工业发展所起的作用是革命性的。笔者认为中国石油工业的未来是美好的 ,并针对加强勘探提出 5点建议。

Lessons from nursing theories: Toward the humanisation of technology

The current viewpoint on technology seems to derive from the optimistic idea of the existence of pre-established harmony that any technological progress leads to people's health, and welfare. But history has shown us that this is not always the case, and that we must select the proper direction which leads to health and welfare. For that purpose, this article presents the viewpoint of technology as a kind of human care service, along with the lessons from nursing theories. Five leading nursing theories are introduced as well as their implications for technology. ‘The nursing model of technology’ is then presented.
