In parasitic wasps, various kinds of antennal plates have been interpreted as olfactory organs due to the presence of numerous pores. However, on the basis of ultrastructural investigations, some of these multiporous plates were revealed as being release sites of exocrine glands while others were postulated to have a gustatory function. Such sensilla, present only on female antennae, show unique features, found exclusively in Platygastroidea, with some differences between Scelionidae and Platygastridae. The cuticular apparatus consists of a short basiconic shaft with an apical multiporous area, the pores of which are covered by movable structures. The cellular components are made up of a remarkable number of sensory neurons, from 200 to 220, and an undefined number of sheath cells. These multiporous sensilla have tubular accessory glands that release their secretion through the socket sensillum only in scelionids. These morphological characters, combined with behavioral observations, strongly suggest a gustatory function, although electrophysiological studies are still needed to confirm this. A new terminology for antennal multiporous plates is discussed in relation to their different functions.  相似文献

A short-chain ,-unsaturated aldehyde, (E)-2-decenal, present in the defensive metathoracic gland ofNezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), stimulates a behavioral response in the egg parasitoidTrissolcus basalis (Woll.) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Preliminary studies showed thatT. basalis are attracted to an area containing adultN. viridula, but we also found that femaleT. basalis would examine and probe glass beads coated with an acetone extract of the metathoracic gland from males or females. Using this bioassay, the kairomone was isolated by bioassay directed by preparative gas chromatography and identified by NMR and mass spectrometry as (E)-2-decenal. The biological activity of the identified aldehyde was compared with analogs to determine specificity. An unstable Z isomer was found to be more active but not present in detectable or behaviorly relevant levels in the host, based on the bell-shaped dose-response curve of the two isomers. An investigation was also designed to determine if theE isomer was also responsible for the egg recognition kairomone activity previously reported. However, no 2-decenal isomers were detected in host egg extracts and the chemical characteristics of the 2-decenal isomers differ from the unidentified egg recognition kairomone. The role of the (E)-2-decenal in attracting femaleT. basalts toN. viridula was demonstrated in a Y-tube olfactometer; this alk-2-enal appears to act as a long-range kairomone orientingT. basalis toNezara populations.  相似文献

Bean plants (Vicia faba L. and Phaseolus vulgaris L.) damaged by feeding activity of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), and onto which an egg mass had been laid, produced volatiles that attracted the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Extracts of volatiles of broad bean and French bean plants induced by adults of N. viridula as a result of their feeding activity, oviposition activity, and feeding and oviposition activity combined were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and tested in Y-tube olfactometer bioassays as attractants for T. basalis females. In extracts from undamaged leguminous plants, green-leaf volatiles were absent or scarcely detected, and monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were present at trace levels. No significant differences were detected in the profiles of volatiles of undamaged plants, and undamaged plants on which bugs were allowed only to lay eggs. In contrast, feeding and oviposition by adults of N. viridula induced in both leguminous plants a significant increase in terpenoids such as linalool, (E)-beta-caryophyllene, (E,E)-4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene, and (3E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, which was induced only in French bean plants. Quantitative comparisons revealed increased levels of (E)-beta-caryophyllene in extracts from feeding-damaged plants with N. viridula egg masses compared to feeding-damaged plants without egg masses. In Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, T. basalis females were attracted by extracts of both leguminous plants only when N. viridula adults were allowed to feed and oviposit upon them. Fractionation of extracts of volatiles from broad bean plants with N. viridula feeding damage and egg masses yielded two fractions. but only the fraction containing (E)-beta-caryophyllene was attractive to the egg parasitoid. These findings indicate that N. viridula feeding and oviposition induce leguminous plants to produce blends of volatiles that are characterized by increased amounts of (E)-beta-caryophyllene, and these blends attract female T. basalis. The role of (E)-beta-caryophyllene as a potential synomone for T. basalis is discussed.  相似文献

Host location and recognition by the egg parasitoid Trissolcus brochymenae were analyzed in terms of response to kairomones from several stages of its host, Murgantia histrionica. In a Y-tube olfactometer, parasitoid females responded by increasing residence time and/or reducing linear speed to chemical cues from gravid females, virgin females and males, fifth and third instars, and eggs. In an open arena, T. brochymenae females also responded to patches contaminated by chemicals from the host in the same stages, sexes, and/or physiological conditions as those tested in the olfactometer. The parasitoid displayed arrestment behavior, increased residence time, changed walking pattern, and intense substrate examination. When host egg clusters or glass dummies with a chemical egg extract were placed on the host-contaminated open arena, these elicited an orientation response in the parasitoid. In addition, the chemical egg extract without dummies elicited the same response, whereas dummies without extract did not influence parasitoid behavior. In a closed arena, the parasitoid females recognized and attempted to probe glass beads treated with chemical extracts of host eggs. There were no significant differences compared with their response to the host eggs, and they did not respond to untreated beads. Host recognition was elicited by chemicals from the follicular secretion used by the host to glue the eggs on the substrate. These results are discussed in relation to the level of the host selection sequence influenced by these cues.  相似文献

Effects of methyl ketone (2-tridecanone and 2-undecanone)/glandular trichome-based resistance to insects ofLycopersicon hirsutum f.glabratum C.H. Mull, PI 134417, on the behavioral responses ofTrichogramma pretiosum Riley andTelenomus sphingis (Ashmead) were observed in the laboratory. ForT. pretiosum, these effects included (1) longer time required by the wasps to cross a leaf disk (diam. 16.3 mm), (2) higher percentage of wasps initiating flight from disks before reaching the edge, and (3) entrapment of wasps in trichome exudates. In tomato genotypes with varying densities of type VI glandular trichomes (3.1–9.2/mm2) but with no methyl ketones in the trichome tips, no such adverse effects were observed. The time taken to cross a disk or initiate flight byT. sphingis, a larger wasp thanT. pretiosum, was not significantly affected on 16.3-mm leaf disks, although the percentage ofT. sphingis initiating flight was directly correlated with trichome density among lines with no ketones. When placed on whole leaflets of plant lines with or without methyl ketones,T. sphingis was entangled by trichome exudates. However, unlikeT. pretiosum, T. sphingis was eventually able to free itself from entanglement. Landing rates byT. sphingis on PI 134417 foliage contained in dialysis tubes were also reduced. Data indicate that suppression of egg parasitism byT. sphingis on resistant foliage is due to both repellent action of its foliar volatiles and reduced searching rates by the parasitoids. Results indicate that a significant portion of the reduction of egg parasitism byT. pretiosum andT. sphingis is attributable to the effects of 2-tridecanone and/or 2-undecanone present in the tips of type VI glandular trichomes on PI 134417 foliage, although the trichomes also adversely affect the wasps even in plant lines without ketones.  相似文献

The olfactory cues involved in the host-finding behavior of Telenomus busseolae Gahan, a solitary egg parasitoid of the corn stalk borer, Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre), were studied. The female wasp was attracted to odors from calling virgin females of S. nonagrioides in a Y-tube olfactometer. No response was elicited by noncalling virgin female moths and/or mated female moths. A four-component commercially available sex pheromone of the corn borer was also tested, as were the individual components of the mixture. T. busseolae respond to the whole blend [(Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate, (Z)-11-hexadecenol, (Z)-11-hexadecenal, and dodecyl acetate in the ratio of 8.5:1:1:2]. Z11–16:OH was the only compound that elicited no significant activity. These results suggest that the sex pheromone released by the host female S. nonagrioides is used by T. busseolae as an indirect cue to locate egg masses of this host.  相似文献

The Scelionidae are small to minute insects which are endoparasitoids in the eggs of insects and some other arthropods. A number of species are important as biocontrol agents in tropical countries. A total of 11 new species of Dyscritobaeus are described in this paper: eight from the Neotropical Region and three from the Australasian Region. The previously unknown male of Dyscritobaeus armatus (Dodd) is also described.  相似文献

Many terrestrial Heteroptera have small, but functional, dorsal abdominal glands as adults. The chemistry, and associated intra- and inter-specific behavior, for dorsal abdominal gland secretions from 10 species representing four genera of Pentatomidae was investigated. Eighteen volatile compounds were identified in species-specific blends from the dorsal abdominal gland secretions ofEuschistus, Acrosternum, andEurydema adults, including aliphatic, aromatic, and terpenoid constituents. Evidence from bioassays is presented that parasitic Tachinidae (Diptera) and Scelionidae (Hymenoptera) use these secretions as kairomones. A field experiment was performed to test the hypothesis that minor volatiles increase the specificity of the main pheromone component from NearcticEuschistus species, methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate. However, significantly fewer individuals ofE. tristigmus were captured in traps baited with the complete blend for this species than in traps baited with methyl (2E,4Z)-decadienoate alone. Thus, at the concentrations tested, these kinds of dorsal abdominal gland secretions may be epideictic, promoting spacing in the natural habitat.  相似文献
