The structure of the recently introduced Brazilian government programme for monitoring pesticide residues in six major agricultural products is described. Residues found from the analysis of samples of tomatoes and strawberries are discussed in detail. The much greater frequency of detection of pesticide residues, many of which are not approved for use in Brazil, in produce being sold on the domestic market, as opposed to that produced for export, is of major concern. It is perceived that this new monitoring programme will become permanent and be used to underpin enforcement actions that will need to be taken to reduce the numbers of incidents of illegal residues occurring, particularly in fresh fruits and vegetables. 相似文献

Consumer awareness, pesticide and fertilizer contaminations and environmental concerns have resulted in significant demand for organically grown farm produce. Consumption of berries has become popular among health-conscious consumers due to the high levels of valuable antioxidants, such as anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds. The present study evaluated the influence that organic farming (OF) and integrated pest management (IPM) practise exert on the total phenolic content in 22 strawberry samples from four varieties. Postharvest performance of OF and IPM strawberries grown in the same area in the centre of Portugal and harvested at the same maturity stage were compared. Chemical profiles (phenolic compounds) were determined with the aid of HPLC-DAD/MS. Total phenolic content was higher for OF strawberry extracts. This study showed that the main differences in bioactive phytochemicals between organically and IPM grown strawberries concerned their anthocyanin levels. Organically grown strawberries were significantly higher in antioxidant activity than were the IPM strawberries, as measured by DPPH and FRAP assays. 相似文献

The effect of non-thermal technologies (ozone in aqueous solution, ultrasound and ultraviolet C radiation) and washings with chemical solutions (sodium hypochlorite and hydrogen peroxide) on safety and quality features of strawberries was studied. These treatments were applied before fruit storage at two different temperatures (4 and 15 °C). The overall impact on microbial loads (total mesophiles, and yeasts and moulds) and selected quality attributes (colour, firmness, pH, total anthocyanins and ascorbic acid content) was assessed.During storage under refrigerated temperature, washing with hydrogen peroxide solutions resulted in strawberries with lower microbial loads, when compared to the other treatments. However, it produced significant key quality attributes losses, such as colour and total anthocyanins content. The results presented show that ozone and ultrasound are promising alternatives to thermal treatments. The application of such technologies, before refrigerated storage of strawberries, allowed a satisfactory retention of all quality characteristics analysed, while being efficient in controlling microbial contamination. 相似文献

The in vitro binding of bile acids by blueberries (Vaccinium spp.), plums (Prunus spp.), prunes (Prunus spp.), strawberries (Fragaria X ananassa), cherries (Malpighia punicifolia) cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) and apples (Malus sylvestris) was determined using a mixture of bile acids secreted in human bile at a duodenal physiological pH of 6.3. Six treatments and two blank incubations were conducted to testing various fresh raw fruits on an equal dry matter basis. Considering cholestyramine (bile acid binding, cholesterol lowering drug) as 100% bound, the relative in vitro bile acid binding on dry matter (DM), total dietary fiber (TDF) and total polysaccharides (PCH) basis was for blueberries 7%, 47% and 25%; plums 6%, 53% and 50%; prunes 5%, 50% and 14%; strawberries 5%, 23% and 15%; cherries 5%, 37% and 5%; cranberries 4%, 12% and 7%; and apple 1%, 7% and 5%, respectively. Bile acid binding on DM basis for blueberries was significantly (P ? 0.05) higher than all the fruits tested. The bile acid binding for plums was similar to that for prunes and strawberries and significantly higher than cherries, cranberries and apples. Binding values for cherries and cranberries were significantly higher than those for apples. These results point to the relative health promoting potential of blueberries > plums = prunes = strawberries = cherries = cranberries > apples as indicated by their bile acid binding on DM basis. The variability in bile acid binding between the fruits tested maybe related to their phytonutrients (antioxidants, polyphenols, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, flavonols, proanthocyanidins, catechins), structure, hydrophobicity of undigested fractions, anionic or cationic nature of the metabolites produced during digestion or their interaction with active binding sites. Inclusion of blueberries, plums, prunes, strawberries, cherries and cranberries in our daily diet as health promoting fruits should be encouraged. Animal studies are planned to validate in vitro bile acid binding of fruits observed herein to their potential of atherosclerosis amelioration (lipid and lipoprotein lowering) and cancer prevention (excretion of toxic metabolites). 相似文献

The potential of using Rhodotorula glutinis alone or in combination with salicylic acid (SA) for the control of postharvest Rhizopus rot of strawberries, and their effects on enzyme activities of fruits were investigated. The combination of R. glutinis (1 × 108 CFU ml−1) with SA (100 μg ml−1) resulted in a significant reduction in the disease incidence and lesion diameter of Rhizopus rot on the strawberry fruits at 20 °C and 4 °C, and more so than with SA or yeast alone. SA at the concentration of 100–1000 μg ml−1 significantly inhibited spore germination of Rhizopus stolonifer. About 100 μg ml−1 of SA did not inhibit the growth of the antagonistic yeast, and could significantly increase the population growth of R. glutinis in strawberry wounds at 20 °C. SA, combined with R. glutinis, increased the activity of strawberry host defence enzymes (POD) and cell wall lytic enzymes (β-1,3-glucanase). 相似文献

Despite fruit, vegetables and many processed products counting towards achieving the recommended five-a-day strategy, it is inevitable that produce choice will affect the benefits delivered. Fruits locally produced and commonly consumed in Scotland were compared for their phenolic acid content and form. The phenolic acid composition was highly variable, but the locally produced fruits were significantly (p < 0.001) higher in total concentration (1.61–4.89 g/kg compared to 0.06–0.22 g/kg). The majority of the phenolic acids were conjugated to other plant components, suggesting that any health benefits derived from these compounds are likely to be after they are released/metabolised by the colonic microbiota. Although the potential protective effects of the individual compounds will not be ascertained until the exact role of these compounds in disease prevention has been clarified, it is clear that the total amount of phenolic acids in the diet will vary enormously depending on the types of fruits consumed. 相似文献

This work demonstrates the influence of changes in parameters of vacuum drying (temperature and pressure) on the sorption properties of dried strawberries. Fruits were dried at 50 and 70°C under pressures of 4 and 16 kPa. Vacuum drying was also conducted during the first 4 h at 70°C and then the temperature was decreased to 50°C at a pressure of 4 kPa. The other combination included increasing the pressure after the first 4 h from 4 to 16 kPa at a drying temperature of 70°C. Sorption isotherms were determined in the dried strawberries. It was shown that with increasing drying temperatures, there was a notable deterioration in the capacity for absorbing water vapor by the vacuum-dried fruit. On the other hand, the pressure at which vacuum drying proceeded did not significantly affect water vapor absorption. Changing the parameters of vacuum drying—that is, temperature in the range of 50–70°C and pressure in the range of 4–16 kPa—affected the shape and structure of the resultant dried strawberries. The combination of vacuum drying with convective drying also influenced the shape and structure of the dried fruit. 相似文献

Strawberries are vulnerable to harboring microbial pathogens because they are generally not washed due to their perishable nature. The focus of this study was to quantify the reduction in infection risks associated with non-O157 Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli serotypes contaminated strawberries if the strawberries are exposed to low doses ∼1 kGy (kiloGray) of electron beam (eBeam) irradiation. A cocktail of six serotypes of non O157 E. coli namely, O26:H11, O45:H2, O103:H2, O111:NM, O121:H19, and O145 was employed. Strawberry puree rather than whole strawberries were used in this study to ensure dose uniformity that is critical for accurate interpretation of microbial reduction. The results show that when these serotypes are exposed to ≤1 kGy eBeam dose, there is approximately 4-log reduction in their numbers when they are present within a strawberry matrix (puree). Quantitative microbial risk assessments suggest that if a typical strawberry serving (150 g) was heavily contaminated (∼105 CFU/serving size), 2 out of 10 susceptible individuals (20%) would get sick (without eBeam treatment). However, if these contaminated strawberries had been treated with 1 kGy of eBeam dose, the infection risks would have be significantly reduced to approximately 4 out of every 100,000 individuals (0.004%). Similarly, even at low levels of contamination (∼102 CFU/serving), the infection risks would be reduced from 6 out of 10,000 susceptible individuals to approximately 4 out of 100 million susceptible individuals. 相似文献

The present investigation studied the freezing of strawberries by immersion in CaCl2 solutions, analysing drip loss, pectin content and the degree of esterification of the pectins, total and cell-wall bonded calcium contents, the ratio bonded calcium/total calcium, and textural parameters. In addition, the effect of immersion in pectin methylesterase (PME) solutions prior to immersion freezing (IF) was analysed. The firmness of thawed fruit decreased by approximately 74% with respect to fresh strawberries, and neither IF-CA (freezing by immersion in CaCl2 solution) nor PME–IF-CA (immersion in PME solution + freezing by immersion in CaCl2 solution) provided significant benefit in maintaining firmness when compared to slow freezing (SF). However, IF provided a significant benefit in reducing drip loss of thawed strawberries when compared to SF, but pre-treatment with PME did not provide any additional benefit. 相似文献

For increasing the shelf life of strawberries during storage, bioactive coatings were applied using modified polysaccharides of chitosan. First, antimicrobial tests were performed with selected essential oils to evaluate their antimicrobial capacities against moulds and total flora isolated from strawberries. Red thyme (RT) and oregano extract (OR) were found as strong bioactive agents against moulds and total flora isolated from strawberries, whereas limonene (LIM) and peppermint (PM) had lower antimicrobial properties. These essential oils were also used as bioactive compounds which were sprayed onto strawberries and evaluated for their potential to increase shelf life during storage at 4 °C. RT, PM and LIM were found to be more efficient preservative agents for strawberries during 14 days of storage. Finally, chitosan was functionalized by acylation with palmitoyl chloride to increase its hydrophobicity, to ensure a controlled release and improve its stability and adhesion to the fruit product. LIM and PM were incorporated into the modified chitosan to create bioactive edible coatings and these were tested for their ability to extend the shelf life of fresh strawberries during storage. Formulations based on modified chitosan containing LIM and Tween®80 were shown to perform better than other formulations. 相似文献
