It has been shown that with careful grazing management and addition of Pand K, but not N, fertilisers Brachiaria pastures are ableto maintain sustainable live weight gains over many years. However, standardon-farm practice, which generally involves high stocking rates, leads after afew years to pasture decline due mainly to N deficiency for grass regrowth. Togenerate an understanding of the mechanism of pasture decline and possiblemanagement options to mitigate this process, a study was performed in theAtlantic forest region of the south of Bahia state to study the N dynamics inpastures of Brachiaria humidicola subject to threedifferent stocking rates of beef cattle, with and without the presence of theforage legume Desmodium ovalifolium. Despite the fact thatthe C:N ratio of the deposited litter was high (60 to 70) the rate ofdecomposition was very rapid (k –0.07 gg–1 day–1) and annual rates of Nturnover through the litter pathway were between 105 and 170 kg Nha–1 year–1. In the grass-onlypasturesas stocking rate increased from 2 to 3 head ha–1, N recycledinthe litter decreased by 11%, but a further increase to 4 headha–1 decreased N recycling by 30% suggesting thatbeyonda certain critical level higher grazing stocking rates would lead to pasturedecline if there was no N addition. High stocking rates decreased theproportionof the legume in the sward, but at all rates the concentration of N in both thegreen and dead grass in the forage on offer and in the litter was higher in themixed sward. The presence of the legume caused a decrease in the C:N ratio ofthe microbial biomass while both soil N mineralisation and nitrificationincreased. This increased rate of turnover of the microbial biomass and thecontribution of N2 fixation to the legume resulted in largeincreasesin the N recycled via litter deposition ranging from 42 to 155 kg Nha–1 year–1.  相似文献

The identification of the dominant sources of carbon supporting consumer biomass in aquatic food webs is often difficult but essential to understanding the limits to aquatic secondary production. Stable isotope analysis (SIA) is a powerful tool to estimate the contribution of different sources to consumers, but most food web studies using this approach limit analyses to a few key consumer taxa rather than measuring biomass‐weighted contribution of sources to the entire community. Here we combined stable isotope analysis with standardized measurements of abundance and biomass of fishes and invertebrates in seven waterholes of a wet–dry tropical river sampled early and late in the dry season. We showed that periphyton (as opposed to phytoplankton and terrestrial C3 plant detritus) was responsible for most standing fish biomass (range 42%–97%), whereas benthic invertebrates were reliant on a mixture of the three sources (range 26%–100%). Furthermore, larger, older fishes at high trophic levels (catfish Neoarius spp., sleepy cod Oxyeleotris lineaolatus and barramundi Lates calcarifer) were supported almost exclusively by periphyton. Phytoplankton and detritus supported a considerable biomass of benthic and pelagic invertebrates, but only in taxa that occupied low trophic levels (e.g. snails). These measurements provide further evidence that although periphyton is relatively inconspicuous relative to other sources, it contributes disproportionately to metazoan biomass in wet–dry tropical rivers. As a result of the 25 January 1999 Armenia earthquake, the city of Pereira (400,000 inhabitants), located on a volcanic ash-covered alluvial fan in the western limit of the Central Cordillera (Colombia), suffered 250 slope movements. After a complete inventory, a monitoring process of unstable areas was designed, based on repeated topographic surveys, soil pore saturation levels and visual inspections. The participation of the communities was crucial and permitted the prediction of slope movements between 2 weeks and 3 months in advance and the evacuation of the inhabitants. Three specific examples are discussed. The method could be improved by excavating observation trenches and observing in detail local rainfall. In all cases, the strong involvement of the community was considered indispensable for the success of the process.  相似文献

Transformation of calcium cyanamide and its inhibitory effect on urea nitrification was studied in some tropical soils. Three soils, from Onne, Mokwa and Samaru, representing different agro-climatological zones of Nigeria were incubated with calcium cyanamide, urea or a mixture of both for eight weeks at 30 °C and at field capacity moisture content. The recovery of inorganic N (NH 4 + plus NO 2 - plus NO 3 - )from calcium cyanamide varied from 64% to 87% in different soils. Most of the inorganic N accumulated was in NH 4 + form. Nitrification of the accumulated NH 4 + in all the soils was slow.Urea (75 mg N kg–1 soil) was completely nitrified within a week in the Samaru and Mokwa soils whereas in the Onne soil the rate of nitrification was slow. Addition of CaCN2 at the rate of 10 mg N kg–1 soil generally delayed ammonification of urea and nitrification was severely inhibited in all the soils. Addition of CaCN2 at the rate of 20 mg N kg–1 soil further reduced the ammonification of urea and completely inhibited the nitrification. High recovery of inorganic N from calcium cyanamide and its effective reduction of nitrification of urea make it suitable source of N for plants in the tropics, provided it is managed to avoid phyto-toxicity.  相似文献

Two age groups of Casuarina equisetifolia (Forst.) plantation stands in the Renukoot forest division of the Vindhyan plateau were investigated over the span of three years for total and component biomass, annual net primary production, energy storage and annual net energy fixation. A high range of biomass (44–81 t ha−1) was recorded in a densely populated stand at ages 5–7 years in comparison to a sparsely populated stand at ages 8–10 years. The contribution of the hole component gradually increased with increasing diameter class while foliage and branch components had a large proportion of biomass in the lower diameter classes. Maximum litterfall occurred in May and foliage litter contributed 87–95% of total litterfall. The energy content and storage in component parts were higher than some other promising tree species for energy plantation in the dry tropics. Production estimates of 19–29 t ha−1 yr−1 showed that the performance of Casuarina is good for dry tropical conditions. The biomass accumulation ratio and production efficiency showed a significant positive and negative (logarithmic) relationship, respectively with plantation age. The energy conserving efficiency of the 5-year old stand was more than twice that of the 8-year old stand.  相似文献

An artificial neural network (ANN) model for estimating sky luminance was developed. A 3-year period (2007–2009) of sky luminance data obtained from measurements at Nakhon Pathom (13.82°N, 100.04°E) and a 1-year period (2008) of the same type of data at Songkhla (7.20°N, 100.60°E), Thailand were used in this study. The ANN model was trained using a back propagation algorithm, based on 2 years data (2007–2008) at Nakhon Pathom for clear, partly cloudy and overcast skies. The trained ANN model was used to predict sky luminance at Nakhon Pathom for the year 2009 for the case of clear, partly cloudy and overcast skies. The results were compared with those of the CIE model. It was found that the ANN model performed better than CIE models for most cases. The ANN model trained with Nakhon Pathom data were also used to predict sky luminance at Songkhla and satisfactory results were obtained.  相似文献

The potential benefits of closed adult nucleus multiple ovulation and embryo transfer (MOET) and conventional progeny testing (CNS) schemes, and the logistics of their integration into large-scale continuous production of crossbred cattle were studied by deterministic simulation. The latter was based on F1 (Bos taurus x Bos indicus) production using AI or natural mating and MOET, and continuous F2 production by mating of F1 animals. The gene flow and the cumulative discounted expressions (CDES) were also calculated. Both schemes had 8, 16, 32, or 64 dams with 2, 4, 8, 16, or 32 sires selected. In the MOET nucleus scheme (MNS), the test capacity was 1, 2, 8, or 16 offspring, and the number of matings per dam per year was 1, 2, or 4. A scheme of 8 sires with 64 dams and a test capacity of 4 female offspring per dam per year resulted in an annual genetic gain (in phenotypic standard deviation) of 0.324 and 0.081 for MNS and CNS, respectively. In the MNS, there was substantial genetic gain with a relatively small number of animals compared with a CNS. The F1 had the highest, and the F2 scheme the lowest CDES. However, a very large number of B. indicus females would be required in the F1 scheme. This scheme may not be practical under conditions in developing countries. The F2 scheme was logistically attractive because it produces its own replacements, and the number of B. taurus females required would be easy to attain. Accompanying technical and financial constraints of nucleus schemes should be addressed before applying them.  相似文献

The dynamics of fish assemblages in reservoirs depend on factors such as the morphometry of the catchment, habitat structure, and the uses of the reservoir. In the Paraíba do Sul (PSR) basin in southeastern Brazil, there are several types of reservoirs, some on the main channel, some are cascade reservoirs originated from a diversion of the waters of the PSR, and others are isolated reservoirs from tributaries. This study aimed to evaluate the influences of these three types of reservoirs on the taxonomic and functional distinctness of the fish assemblages. It was hypothesized that reservoirs on the main channel (more inflowing waters and habitat availability) have higher taxonomic and functional distinctness compared to cascade reservoirs, which in turn, have greater distinctness than isolated reservoirs. In addition, we expect assemblage structure to differ among these types of reservoirs because of the close relationship with local environmental conditions and habitat structure. Thirty measurements (26 quantitative and 4 categorical) from 34 fish species representing functional traits associated with locomotion, feeding, life strategy, and habitat use were taken. Fish assemblages differed among the three types of reservoirs, which was probably associated with different environmental and local habitat conditions. Higher taxonomic and functional distinctness were found for the isolated reservoirs, and lower for reservoirs on the main channel. This suggests that the fish fauna in this latter type of reservoir were probably composed of phylogenetically close and morphologically similar species. It is likely that limitation of the available resources induces fish to partition the available niches to coexist, favoring assemblages with species adapted to different functions. Our results demonstrate that assessing fish functional and taxonomic distinctness can be used to advance understanding of fish communities from reservoirs in Neotropical regions.  相似文献

The use of finely ground phosphate rocks (PRs) as directly applied P fertilizers in tropical farming systems is a cheaper alternative to acidulated, water-soluble P products. However, the effectiveness of PRs in tropical environments depends on the extent to which the required P uptake rate of the crop plant can be maintained by the rate of PR dissolution in that soil. That extent that this outcome is achieved depends on the properties of the PR, the soil, climate, plant factors, and on management practice. Environmental conditions in the surface layers of highly weathered soils in the humid tropics are generally conducive of the attainment of satisfactory rates of PR dissolution, especially as the reactivity of the PR increases. In soils with very high P sorption capacities, however, the agronomic effectiveness of PRs is reduced as the acquisition of dissolved P by plant roots is restricted by competition from P sorption processes in the soil.In determining the required reactivity of PRs for use in tropical regions one must consider the rate of P demand by the crop or pasture and the suitability of the soil environment for PR dissolution. The use of some water-soluble P in combination with the PR might enable PRs of low reactivity to also be used, where alone they would be relatively ineffective. The ability of PRs to provide Ca, in addition to P, needs further study because subsoil Ca deficiency is becoming more widely recognized as a production constraint in highly weathered tropical soils. The future use of PRs in tropical agriculture is expected to expand for plantation crops and pastures and especially for landlocked countries with local deposits of PR. Increased use of PRs will also occur where more reactive PRs can effectively be used to increase the yield of annual food crop.  相似文献
