Optimization of photo‐aligned ferroelectric liquid‐crystal display under passively addressed driving

Abstract— A ferroelectric liquid‐crystal (FLC) passively addressed 64 × 64 display based on the photo‐alignment technique has been developed. The display matrix has dimensions of 33 × 33 mm2, and the FLC layer thickness is about 5 μm. Asymmetric boundary conditions, when only one of ITO surfaces of the display matrix is covered with the photo‐aligning layer while another one is not, have been used for providing both high contrast ratio and steady multiplex operation. The electro‐optical performance of the 5‐μm FLC display is presented, including bistable switching in static operation, optimization in multiplexing operation, and gray‐scale generation. 相似文献

AbstractThe time evolution of entanglement between two quantum dots (QDs) trapped inside a cavity driven by a coherent quantized field is studied. In the presence of dissipation, entanglement shows many interesting features such as sudden death and revival, and finite steady state value after sudden death. We also investigate dependence of entanglement on dot variables and its relation to bistability. It is found that entanglement vanishes when the cavity field intensity approaches the upper branch of the bistability curve. When the cavity is driven by a modulated field in the presence of dissipation, it can periodically generate entanglement, which is much larger than the maximum value attained in the steady-state for this system but the dots are never fully entangled. 相似文献

Bistability is a fundamental phenomenon in nature. In biology, a number of fine properties of bistability have been identified. However, these properties are only consequences of bistability at the physiological level, which do not explain why it had to emerge during evolution. Using optimal homeostasis as the first principle, I find that bistability emerges as an indispensable control mechanism. It is the only solution to a dilemma in glucose homeostasis: high insulin efficiency is required to confer rapidness in plasma glucose clearance, whereas an insulin sparing state is required to guarantee the brain''s safety during fasting. The optimality consideration renders a clear correspondence between the molecular and physiological levels. This new perspective can illuminate studies on the twin epidemics of obesity and diabetes and the corresponding intervening strategies. For example, overnutrition and sedentary lifestyle may represent sudden environmental changes that cause the lose of optimality, which may contribute to the marked rise of obesity and diabetes in our generation. Because this bistability result is independent of the parameters of the mathematical model (for which the result is quite general), some other biological systems may also use bistability to control homeostasis. 相似文献

Dual phosphorylation of proteins is a principal component of intracellular signalling. Bistability is considered an important property of such systems and its origin is not yet completely understood. Theoretical studies have established parameter values for multistationarity and bistability for many types of proteins. However, up to now no formal criterion linking multistationarity and bistability to the parameter values characterizing dual phosphorylation has been established. Deciding whether an unclassified protein has the capacity for bistability, therefore requires careful numerical studies. Here, we present two general algebraic conditions in the form of inequalities. The first employs the catalytic constants, and if satisfied guarantees multistationarity (and hence the potential for bistability). The second involves the catalytic and Michaelis constants, and if satisfied guarantees uniqueness of steady states (and hence absence of bistability). Our method also allows for the direct computation of the total concentration values such that multistationarity occurs. Applying our results yields insights into the emergence of bistability in the ERK–MEK–MKP system that previously required a delicate numerical effort. Our algebraic conditions present a practical way to determine the capacity for bistability and hence will be a useful tool for examining the origin of bistability in many models containing dual phosphorylation. 相似文献

Peculiarities in catalytic activity in carbon monoxide oxidation as well as some structure, electronic and magnetic properties of the three oxide catalysts, Mn3+–O/Al2O3 (1), Mn3+–O–Fe/Al2O3 (Mn-substituted spinel, 2) and -Fe2O3/Al2O3 (3), were studied by kinetic measurements and by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The catalysts 1 and 2 showed a kinetic bistability with a sharp transition towards more reactive state at 200°C (ignition point). In contrast, for catalyst 3, at 200–250°C, the behavior of reaction rate against temperature did not display noticeable hysteresis. On cooling the catalysts 1 and 2, extinction was observed at about 170 and 120°C, respectively, i.e., at 30–80°C lower than the corresponding ignition points. Proximity of activation energy for the high and low activity (15–19 kJ/mol) for both Mn-containing catalysts suggests an increase in the number of active sites at high temperature with no changes in the reaction mechanism. The considerable difference between Mn-containing catalysts 1, 2 and Fe-containing catalyst 3 may be caused by Jahn–Teller (JT) type distortions of the oxygen polyhedron around Mn3+. A significant spontaneous axial bond stretching within the local polyhedron seems to diminish Mn–O binding energy, facilitate the participation of surface oxygen species, OS, in the oxidation of CO by a redox mechanism and promote oxygen vacancies at the surface that would cause considerable effect on the activity. An increase in the width of the counterclockwise hysteresis loop for the catalyst 2 compared to the catalyst 1 indicates that clusters of mixed spinel provide more active sites and more labile OS species than clusters of the binary Mn oxide. 相似文献
