一种快速并行关联规则算法研究及仿真*

在比较了当前几种并行关联规则挖掘算法的基础上,对并行关联规则算法进行了比较全面的分析,为了解决其性能和效率方面存在的问题,提出了一种快速挖掘策略的并行处理算法（FPARM）,并对这种快速并行关联规则算法的性能作了比较分析。经过计算机仿真实验的性能比较,采用快速并行算法的性能和效率提高了,达到了算法优化的目的。

基于学科竞赛背景的光电核心课程教学改革

采用竞赛模式作为教学改革背景,从“聚焦学习成果的多形成性评价”和“培养学生解决复杂工程问题能力”等方面入手,开展了基于学科竞赛的光电核心课程的教学改革。在核心课程的教学环节中,通过培育和孵化学科竞赛项目,提供学生将理论知识与实践操作有机结合的机会,培养解决复杂工程问题的能力,弥补了传统教学中缺乏实践机会的不足。同时,在竞赛培育环节中,引入多元化的评价方式,注重学生对学习内容的实际运用和创新实践能力的表现,解决了评价方式过于单一的问题。     

哲匠之路──近代中国建筑师的先驱者孙支厦研究

孙支厦是最早的近代中国建筑师,他所代表的土木工程专业出身的建筑师至今仍在中国的建筑业中发挥重要作用。他又是近代中国建筑师产生过程中的非主流的过渡性人物,在他之后才出现近代意义上的、建筑学专业出身的建筑师,但这井不影响他的历史地位。

Psychology, history, and the press: The case of William McDougall and The New York Times..

A number of reasons have been suggested for the rapid decline in influence and credibility experienced by William McDougall after his arrival in America. To obtain some evidence on this issue, all articles appearing in The New York Times between 1906 and 1940 in which McDougall was mentioned were coded for the nature of the image conveyed. Articles mentioning the two authors most similar to McDougall in terms of number of citations, Joseph Jastrow and Edward L. Thorndike, were also coded for the nature of the image conveyed. In contrast to the images of Jastrow and Thorndike, the image McDougall conveyed was significantly more negative. McDougall was more often satirized, and references to McDougall were significantly less likely to be simple reporting of something he had said or done. Results are discussed in terms of the role of the press in "deciding" controversies in which the scientific community has lost interest. Analysis of a class of distributed queues with applications

Recently we have developed a class of media access control algorithms for different types of Local Area Networks. A common feature of these LAN algorithms is that they represent various methods by which the processors in the LAN can simulate the availability of centralized packet transport facility, but whose service incorporates a particular type of changeover time known as ‘moving server’ overhead. First we describe the operation of moving server systems in general, for both First-Come-First-Served and Head-of-the-Line orders of service, together with an approach for their delay analysis where we transform the moving server system into a conventional queueing system having proportional waiting times. Then we describe how the various LAN algorithms may be obtained from the ideal moving server system, and how a major component of their performance characteristics is determined by the performance characteristics of that ideal system. Finally, we evaluate the compatibility of such LAN algorithms with separable queueing network models of distributed systems by computing the interdeparture time distribution for M/M/1 in the presence of moving server overhead. Although it is not exponential except in the limits of low server utilization or low overhead, the interdeparture time distribution is a weighted sum of exponential terms with a coefficient of variation not much smaller than unity. Thus, we conjecture that a service centre with moving server overhead could be used to represent one of these LAN algorithms in a product form queueing network model of a distributed system without introducing significant approximation errors.     

Looking Beyond Informality

It is all too easy to be optimistic about the economic and social future of Latin America. Daniela Fabricius , the author of 100% Favela: The Informal Geographies of Rio de Janeiro (forthcoming), calls into question architects working within the realpolitik of a globalised, post-nationalist world. Could an all too ready acceptance of existing conditions and the adoption of informality leave inhabitants short-changed? For to live informally is also to live precariously - no substitute for secure and prosperous living.     

On Sequenial Tests of the Bincknial Distribution

In this paper, we consider the detailed characteristics of the standard sequential test of a simple hypothesis versus a single alternative for the case of the binomial distribution. A method is developed which permits evaluation of the associated probabilities of acceptance and/or rejection of the null hypothesis at each stage. From this information, the quantitative features of the test (Operating Characteristic and test termination probability) are completely determined. Curves are presented to facilitate assessment of the sequential procedure in practical cases. A sequential test is compared with a fixed sample size test having approximately the same Operating Characteristic. Wald's approximation for the average sample number is compared with exact values.     

Reliability of an Independent Component,s-Spare System with Exponential Life Times and General Repair Times

In this paper, the reliability of a system with N independent components supplied with a pool of s spares is investigated. The components have an exponential life time distribution and the failed components are repaired, one at a time, with a general repair time distribution. Numerical results are presented for the mean time to system failure (system is said to fail when a component fails with no spare available) and the reliability of the system in some special cases of interest.
