Ground failure in Adapazari, Turkey during the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake was severe. Hundreds of structures settled, slid, tilted, and collapsed due in part to liquefaction and ground softening. Ground failure was more severe adjacent to and under buildings. The soils that led to severe building damage were generally low plasticity silts. In this paper, the results of a comprehensive investigation of the soils of Adapazari, which included cone penetration test (CPT) profiles followed by borings with standard penetration tests (SPTs) and soil index tests, are presented. The effects of subsurface conditions on the occurrence of ground failure and its resulting effect on building performance are explored through representative case histories. CPT- and SPT-based liquefaction triggering procedures adequately identified soils that liquefied if the clay-size criterion of the Chinese criteria was disregarded. The CPT was able to identify thin seams of loose liquefiable silt, and the SPT (with retrieved samples) allowed for reliable evaluation of the liquefaction susceptibility of fine-grained soils. A well-documented database of in situ and index testing is now available for incorporating in future CPT- and SPT-based liquefaction triggering correlations. 相似文献

This paper discusses the development of virtual structural analysis program (VSAP). This is a virtual environment (VE) based structural analysis system developed through a collaborative effort between the School of Architecture + Design and the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univ. (Virginia Tech). The VSAP was developed by linking a visualization routine using the simple VE library and a structural analysis software, the PC-SAP4. Details of the design of four user interfaces for the VSAP are presented. These user interfaces are: the immersive pen and tablet interface, the desktop interface, the portable immersive interface, and the cave automatic VE immersive interface. Usability studies for each interface were conducted. Results of these studies indicated that the users of VSAP were highly satisfied with the experience. In addition, all the developed interfaces were found to be successful for their specific application. 相似文献

Cable-stayed bridges are flexible structures, and control of their vibrations is an important consideration and a challenging problem. In this paper, the wavelet-hybrid feedback least mean squared algorithm recently developed by the writers is used for vibration control of cable-stayed bridges under various seismic excitations. The effectiveness of the algorithm is investigated through numerical simulation using a benchmark control problem created based on an actual semifan-type cable-stayed bridge design. The performance of the algorithm is compared with that of a sample linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller using three different earthquake records: the El Centro (California, 1940), Mexico City (Mexico, 1985), and Gebze (Turkey, 1999) earthquakes. Simulation results demonstrate that the new algorithm is consistently more effective than the sample LQG controller for all three earthquake records. Additional numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the sensitivity of the new control algorithm. It is concluded that the algorithm is robust against the uncertainties existing in modeling structures. 相似文献

Operations including borehole fluid injections are typical for exploration and development of hydrocarbon or geothermic reservoirs. Microseismicity occurring during such operations has a large potential for understanding physics of the seismogenic process as well as in obtaining detailed information about reservoirs at locations as far as several kilometers from boreholes. We propose that the phenomenon of microseismicity triggering by borehole fluid injections is related to the process of the Frenkel–Biot slow wave propagation. In the low-frequency range (hours or days of fluid injection durations) this process reduces to the pore-pressure diffusion. We search for diffusion-related features of induced microseismicity. Two types of such signatures are considered. The first one is related to the geometry of microseismic clouds. Another type of signature is related to the probability of microearthquakes. On this basis we introduce a concept for interpretation of microseismic data which provides a possibility to infer information about hydraulic properties of rocks. Such information can be of significant importance for industrial applications and for understanding physical properties of geological structures. 相似文献

This paper addresses the first generation benchmark problem on structural health monitoring developed by the ASCE Task Group on Structural Health Monitoring. The focus of the problem is a four-story model of an existing physical model at the University of British Columbia where simulated data are used for the system identification. Modal parameters were extracted using the frequency domain decomposition method. Rather than relying on data from the undamaged structure, a new proposed methodology based on ratios between stiffness and mass values from the eigenvalue problem is presented to identify the undamaged state of the structure. Once the structural identification is complete, the damage index method is used to detect the location and severity of damage. By not relying on undamaged structure information, this approach may be applicable to existing structures that may already incorporate some amount of damage. 相似文献

A relatively simple rigid plastic multiblock computational model has been developed to predict the permanent seismic displacement of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. The model formulation was based on many observations made from a series of centrifuge tests carried out on many different configurations of MSE walls. The proposed model is similar to the sliding block method of Newmark. The approach accounted for the variation in acceleration within the backfill and the nonuniform nature of the permanent wall face deformation. The predictive capability of the proposed model has been verified using centrifuge test results obtained for four MSE walls each subjected to three earthquake excitations with strength varying between 0.48 and 0.9g. The analytical model captures many aspects of the characteristic deformation behavior of MSE walls observed in the centrifuge tests. In each of the eleven wall displacement cases studied, the backfill friction angle that yielded a good match between the computed and measured maximum wall displacement was consistent with the corresponding laboratory measured values. 相似文献

This paper presents the performance of a shopping complex in Turkey where the soils were improved with jet-grout columns and preload fills and subjected to the 1999 Kocaeli Earthquake (M = 7.4). Under construction at the time of the earthquake, the Carrefour Shopping Center covers an area of 55,000?m2 and is founded on shallow footings, mats, and slabs-on-grade that rest on soft, saturated alluvial sediments consisting of clays, silts, and sands. High-modulus columns constructed by jet grouting were installed at close-to-moderate spacings to reduce anticipated static settlements in the clays and mitigate liquefaction in the sands. The site was subjected to a peak acceleration of approximately 0.2g during the earthquake. Grouting had been completed for about two-thirds of the site when the earthquake struck. Following the event, a field reconnaissance found stark contrast between the performance of the improved and unimproved sections. The jet-grout-treated areas suffered no apparent damage, whereas the unimproved sections of the complex, along with nearby untreated building sites, commonly suffered liquefaction-related settlements of up to 10 cm. This is the only case history known to the authors that documents the field performance of high-modulus columns used in this manner for liquefaction mitigation and direct instrumented measurement of liquefaction-induced settlements. 相似文献

The State Street Bridge, in Salt Lake City, was designed and built in 1965 according to the 1961 AASHO specifications; the design did not include earthquake-induced forces or displacements since only wind loads were considered. The bridge consists of four reinforced concrete (RC) bents supporting composite welded steel girders; the bents are supported on cast-in-place concrete piles and pile caps. A vulnerability analysis of the bridge was conducted that determined deficiencies in (1) confinement of column lap splice regions, (2) anchorage of longitudinal column bars in the bent cap, (3) confinement of column plastic hinge zones, and (4) shear capacity of columns and bent cap–column joints. Seismic retrofit designs using carbon-fiber-reinforced-polymer (CFRP) composites and steel jackets were performed and compared for three design spectra, including the 10% probability of exceedance in 250 years earthquake. The CFRP composite design was selected for implementation and application of the composite was carried out in the summer of 2000 and 2001, while the bridge was in service. The paper describes the CFRP composite design, which, in addition to column jackets, implemented an “ankle wrap” for improving joint shear strength and a “U-strap” for improving anchorage of column bars in the bent cap; other retrofit measures were implemented, such as bumper brackets and a deck slab retrofit. A capacity versus demand evaluation of the as-built and retrofitted bents is presented. 相似文献

A method to utilize fiber composites for rapid repair of earthquake damaged flared columns was developed. Two 0.4-scale reinforced concrete columns that had been tested to failure in previous research were used. Both columns had been subjected to slow cyclic loads and had failed due to low-cycle fatigue of the longitudinal bars. To repair the columns, the damaged concrete in and around the plastic hinge was removed and the steel bars were straightened. Low-shrinkage, high-strength concrete grout was placed in the column afterward. The broken longitudinal bars were not replaced. Rather, glass and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets with fibers running in the axial direction of the column were added to provide flexural strength to the columns. Additionally, glass FRP sheets with horizontal fibers were attached on the column to provide confinement and shear strength. Cyclic tests of the repaired columns indicated that the method to restore the strength was effective. Analysis using conventional constitutive relationships led to a close estimate of the lateral load response of the models. 相似文献

The design of reinforced earth structures uses idealized two-dimensional (2D) geometry – classifying as a plane-strain analysis. This 2D idealization greatly simplifies design by ignoring stabilizing effects posed by three-dimensional (3D) characteristics. While the outcome of this 2D idealization is conservative in terms of required reinforcement strength, ignoring 3D end effects in back-calculations of experimental and field data may overestimate the contribution of the reinforcement to stability thus possibly leading to unconservative learned lessons related to design. The objective of this study is to explore 3D effects on the required strength of reinforcement in geosynthetic-reinforced earth structures (GRESs) using a modified 3D limit equilibrium (LE) slope stability analysis. To determine the stability of GRESs, a rotational, 3D failure mechanism, derived from variational LE analysis, is applied using a log-spiral surface generalized to 3D conditions. In order to determine the long-term strength of geosynthetics required to ensure sufficient internal stability, the moment equilibrium approach is applied and its respective equations solved. In order to conveniently assess the end effects on the required total strength of reinforcement and the volume of failing mass considering the feasible length of potential failure, a series of design charts are presented. These charts can also be useful in forensic studies when back-calculating the in-situ mobilized strength of the geosynthetic for 3D failures. The impact of seismicity and the assumed function of forces distributed amongst the reinforcement layers were investigated to highlight their importance. To keep this study focused on 3D end effects, this study is limited to a simple 3D GRES problem; however, extending the present framework to deal with complex homogenous problems is straightforward. 相似文献
