Abstract

‘The good is oft interred with their bones.’ Much of what has been written of William Henry Fox Talbot has done him meagre justice: criticism for patenting his inventions, accusations that he patented the ideas of others, denigration of the importance of his discoveries. Though acknowledged as a scientist, his place as an artistic worker in the medium he invented has not been appreciated.

Ernest Ropiquet Hilgard earned the Gold Medal Award as a gifted generalist, who has made scientific contributions to nearly every field of psychology, most notably in learning and states of consciousness; a deep student of psychological history and systems; a man of conscience, concerned with social issues and the applications of psychology to human welfare; a leader and statesman in social science research policy and education; and above all, a teacher, through his writings, his work with students, and his example. Captured Kriegsmarine Enigma Documents at Bletchley Park

Abstract

The discovery of intercepts in the Japanese “Orange Translations” regarding the sinking of merchant ships (marus) bearing allied POWs led to the conclusion that the Joint Intelligence Center Pacific Ocean Area (JICPOA) gave latitudes and longitudes of these vessels to the Commander, Submarine Force, Pacific (ComSubPac) knowing that POWs would be killed. An examination of the “Orange Translations” reveals that most of the intercepts are from the Japanese Water Transport Code (2468) system, not the “Maru Code” (JN-11). The author concludes that while JICPOA provided ComSubPac with convoy coordinates, they were unaware of the presence of POWs on the marus.

Obituary: Ernest R. Hilgard (1904--2001).

Memorializes Ernest R. Hilgard who wrote the influential texts Conditioning and Learning (1940, with D. Marquis), Theories of Learning (1948), Introduction to Psychology (1953) and Divided Consciousness (1977). He is well known for his work in the area of hypnosis and hypnotic analgesia.
