The Fetish of Flexibility: Farrell/Grimshaw Partnership, 125 Park Road,London

Completed in 1970, this residential building on a prime London site is recognised as a pioneering example of the British High Tech style. More importantly for this issue of AD, it was designed so that leaseholders could devise their apartments' layouts themselves, with maximum allowance for future adaptation – in contrast with the high-spec, investor-driven typology that is prevalent for such sites today. Writer and architect Edwin Heathcote describes the building's structure, the co-ownership housing society model that made it possible, and how it has fared over time.     

My personal reactions to Rogers (1957): The facilitative but neither necessary nor sufficient conditions of therapeutic personality change.

In this brief commentary regarding Rogers' (1957) paper (see record 2007-14639-002), I comment on Rogers' statement about personality change, the six conditions, and the resulting hypotheses. I conclude that the construct of therapeutic personality change needs to be reformulated to include interpersonal changes, and that the six conditions can facilitate therapeutic personality change, but are neither necessary nor sufficient for therapeutic personality change. I also suggest that several components from current common factors models (e.g., building expectations of change, encouraging corrective experiences) and a consideration of boundaries need to be included into a reformulation of Rogers' propositions. Modular visions: Referents, context and strategies for database open media works

The processes of constructing meaning in digital database environments entail a paradigm shift from previous models of audio-visual communication. Media emerging from the Electro-mechanical era (film/TV/video) present fixed spatio-temporal linearity and material conditions which objectify and render passive viewer and process. The problematic aspects of cinematic communication were addressed by Latin American filmmakers of the Third Cinema movement. Their concerns and approach presaged and assisted an understanding of the radical redefinition of audio-visual communication possible with digital databases. The conceptual and aesthetic aspirations of Third Cinema artists such as Julio Garcia Espinosa and Fernando Solanas were ultimately contradictory to linear media and find their fitting medium in digital modular construction. The materiality of database expression lacks an intrinsic temporal or spatial state and permits a more dynamic and multidirectional set of power relationships between author/s, piece, viewer/s. Other important referents for contextualising database art are modern art practitioners that rejected linear representational space and fractured the centrality of authorship. The author's own work, ...two, three, many Guevaras, an exploratory database environment, embraces the redefinition of process as artistic expression, the empowerment of interacting generative forces, and serves to illustrate the revolutionary potential of the new media.

Distinguished contributions to applied psychology as a professional practice: Rogers H. Wright.

Presents the citation, biography, and bibliography for Rogers H. Wright, the 1985 recipient of the American Psychological Association's Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. Known by many as the 'Father of Professional Psychology,' Dr. Wright has been in the forefront of the struggle for recognition by Professional Psychology. Possibly the most important and powerful contribution that Dr. Wright has made was in co-founding and being the first President of the Committee for the Advancement of Psychological Professions and Sciences (CAPPS), the group that introduced Psychology into public policy advocacy. It was this group that brought the American Psychological Association into the public policy arena and led to the establishment of AAP and the various policy groups within APA that now play such a major part in APA's program.
