Presents an obituary for Hans Hermann Strupp, internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist and psychotherapy research pioneer, who died October 5, 2006, in Nashville, Tennessee, following a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Hans Strupp elicited unusual respect across disciplines, including psychiatry and medicine, and across national boundaries in numerous countries. Hans was truly a person of great distinction; he brought honor to his friends, his discipline, his university, his nation, and his family. Complex refractive index,single scattering albedo,and mass absorption coefficient of secondary organic aerosols generated from oxidation of biogenic and anthropogenic precursors

Refractive index and optical properties of biogenic and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles were investigated. Aerosol precursors, namely longifolene, α-pinene, 1-methylnaphthalene, phenol, and toluene were oxidized in a Teflon chamber to produce SOA particles under different initial hydrocarbon concentrations and hydroxyl radical sources, reflecting exposures to different levels of nitrogen oxides (NO_x). The real and imaginary components (n and k, respectively) of the refractive index at 375?nm and 632?nm were determined by Mie theory calculations through an iterative process, using the χ² function to evaluate the fitness of the predicted optical parameters with the measured scattering, absorption, and extinction coefficients from a Photoacoustic Extinctiometer and Cavity Attenuated Phase Shift Spectrometer. Single scattering albedo (SSA) and bulk mass absorption coefficient (MAC) at 375?nm were calculated. SSA values of SOA particles from biogenic precursors (longifolene and α-pinene) were ～0.98–0.99 (～6.3% uncertainty), reflecting purely scattering aerosols regardless of the NO_x regime. However, SOA particles from aromatic precursors were more absorbing and displayed NO_x-dependent SSA values. For 1-methylnaphthalene SOA particles, SSA values of 0.92–0.95 and ～0.75–0.90 (～6.1% uncertainty) were observed under intermediate- and high-NO_x conditions, respectively, reflecting the absorbing effects of SOA particles and NO_x chemistry for this aromatic system. In mixtures of longifolene and phenol or longifolene and toluene SOA under intermediate- and high-NO_x conditions, k values of the aromatic-related component of the SOA mixture were higher than that of 1-methylnaphthalene SOA particles. With the increase in OH exposure, k_phenol decreased from 0.10 to 0.02 and 0.22 to 0.05 for intermediate- and high-NO_x conditions, respectively. A simple relative radiative forcing calculation for urban environments at λ?=?375?nm suggests the influence of absorbing SOA particles on relative radiative forcing at this wavelength is most significant for aerosol sizes greater than 0.4?µm.

TYIN tegnestue Architects. Integrating On-Site Education and Practice

Founded by Andreas Grøntvedt Gjertsen and Yashar Hanstad, TYIN tegnestue Architects grew out of an initiative to provide sleeping accommodation for an orphanage in Thailand when the principals were only third-year architecture students. Norwegian architect Lisbet Harboe explains how the student-architects built up a practice while in schools by refocusing their studies and those of their peers on learning through their own experiences of construction.     

In memoriam: Hans H. Strupp (1921-2006).

Hans Hermann Strupp, who deeply influenced the field of psychotherapy research for 50 years, died on October 5, 2006, of Parkinson's disease. He was 85 years old. Hans entered the field when psychotherapy research largely focused on straightforward questions of general efficacy. Beginning with the publication of his dissertation in 1955, Hans demonstrated a keen ability of systematically applying rigorous scientific methods to phenomena that were close to the hearts of practicing therapists. Hans was an early advocate of the need for audio and video recording of therapy sessions for research purposes. The scientific study of the therapeutic process was a central focus of his research. Equal to his empirical contributions was Hans's talent as a writer and what many regard as his uncanny rhetorical abilities. This balance allowed him to engage in discussions with many scientists from radically different schools, which contributed to the foundation of the movement of psychotherapy integration. Award for Distinguished Professional Contributions: Hans H. Strupp.

Recognizing the diversity of roles and activities in which many professional psychologists are engaged, beginning in 1979, Professional Awards have been presented to individual members of the Association whose distinguished contributions have served to advance psychology as a profession in the areas of knowledge, public service, and professional practice. Hans Strupp was the recipient of the Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge award. Strupp was cited for his numerous contributions to the knowledge and practice of professional psychology. A pioneer in the study of therapeutic process and change, he has forged rigorous research methods for studying psychotherapy. His stewardship of psychotherapy research has helped form it into a respected field of scientific inquiry, and his active leadership in the integration of clinical and research knowledge has been invaluable to the psychotherapy professions. Walter Pichler
