Upgrading Computational Design

Shajay Bhooshan heads up the computation and design ZHACODE group at Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and is a course master at the Architectural Association Design Research Laboratory (AADRL). Here he argues that Parametricism 2.0 has a vital role to play in the progressing of computational design. Assimilating the exploratory developments of the last 15 years, he asserts how the next phase of Parametricism will enable a further consolidation and evolution of digital practices.     

The birth of ‘land use planning’ in American urban planning

Although the concept of ‘land use planning’ is now firmly enmeshed in American urban planning, its meaning still remains vague. This paper aims to clarify the meaning by examining the historical development of land use planning in the USA. At the beginning of the twentieth century, city planners viewed a city as an organic unit of public facilities. While city planning thereafter provided potential elements of land use planning, such as zoning, zoning surveys and land use classification systems, the idea of land use planning itself was actually derived from rural county planning and was initially utilized in urban county planning as a guide for zoning in the 1930s. After bringing about a change in the way cities were viewed, that is, as a pattern of land use and population density, land use planning was further employed as a guide for urban redevelopment policies in the 1940s, and finally reaching full integration into city planning in the 1950s and 1960s.     

Obituary: Irving J. Saltzman (1923-2000).

Memorializes Irving J. Saltzman, known for his work as chair of the Department of Psychology at Indiana University. He guided the department through a time of major change in education and in psychology. He promoted an atmosphere that was particularly beneficial to new faculty at a time when the loyalty of faculty was decreasing and the professionalization of psychology was increasing. He was a tenacious proponent of his department, and led by example, saying that he could not expect others to do what he was unwilling to do himself. A New Role for Psychology: Comment.

Letter comments that, about four years ago, Irving S. Cooper, a neurosurgeon in New York City, developed a new type of brain surgery designed to alleviate the tremor and rigidity associated with Parkinson's Disease. As Cooper's work and research progressed, it soon became evident that a significant factor in the selection of appropriate candidates was the patient's psychological and mental condition. Thus it was decided to add a clinical psychologist to the team of professional and rehabilitation people carrying out preoperative evaluation. So far as the letter's author knows, St, Barnabas Hospital is the only setting in this country in which psychologists work so closely with a Department of Neurologic Surgery in both a clinical and research role. The author feels it is significant to report this development which opens up a broad new area for which psychological services are utilized. Architecture with Legs

Dreaming of developing the Thames Estuary, Ian Abley and Jonathan Schwinge went to see the Maunsell Sea Forts, built off the coast of Herne Bay, Kent, in 1942. Here they met members of Project Redsand, a charitable organisation that aims to preserve the forts as a public museum, and which has so far received encouragement from both industry and government departments.

A Life in Peking: The Peabody Albums

The author examines two photograph albums found in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum (Salem, Massachusetts). The albums contain 125 albumen prints depicting people and places associated with Peking (Beijing), China in the late-nineteenth century. Through a close analysis of the individual images, in the context of a detailed understanding of the historical period, the author is able to attribute the topographic views of Peking to Dr John Dudgeon (a missionary doctor from Scotland) and the ownership of the albums to Hugh Fraser (a diplomat in the British Legation).
