Megaprojects as complex adaptive systems: The Hinkley point C case

Megaprojects are complex projects which impact millions of people, involve public and private stakeholders, and present challenges related to decision making and performance shortfalls. They are relevant cases for studying faulty management thinking as well as performance evolutions and self-organizing dynamics. Our paper builds on the theory of Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) to understand and model processes of evolution in the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant megaproject. The results show that CAS properties apply to megaproject changes and provide a theoretical and practical framework for examining and modeling megaproject management dynamics. We designed a research methodology combining content analysis and historical research for its relevance in conducting organizational research in conditions of complexity and non-linearity. This original research design makes it possible to conduct causal analyses of relations between key megaproject events and thus build models of evolution dynamics in stakeholder success expectations, change mechanisms in the implementation of project outputs, and self-organizing patterns.

Diffusive Thermal Architecture: New Work from the Hylozoic Series

Could the use of high-resolution image equipment and the thermodynamic patterns that they produce have a significant application in architectural design? Architect Philip Beesley , a professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo in Canada, describes the explorations revealed by the Hylozoic Series, a collaborative series of immersive architectural environments directed by a team from the university. He explains how the subtle effects of the works are achieved by integrating active filters into canopies and screens that create immersive, forest-like installations.

Suspension and solution thermal spray coatings

The emerging methods of coating deposition by suspension and solution thermal spraying are described. The liquid suspensions of fine powders and liquid precursors are injected into flames and/or jets generated in the torches. The formulation and stability of suspensions as well as the methods of fine powders synthesis are briefly described. Typical solutions, being often the liquid organo-metallics are also briefly described. An important problem of injection of liquids into jets and flames is then presented. Two principal modes of injection, used at present, are outlined, i.e.: (i) atomization; and, (ii) injection of a continuous jet. Subsequently, the phenomena occurring in flames and plasma jets are discussed and the major differences to these occurring during conventional spraying are stressed up. The build up of coatings starting from the impact of fine particles on the substrate is described and typical microstructures of suspension and solution sprayed coatings are shown. Some properties of the sprayed coatings, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, and thermophysical ones are collected and presented. Finally, the emerging applications of coatings are shown and the possible future applications are discussed.
