Presents an obituary for Hans Hermann Strupp, internationally acclaimed clinical psychologist and psychotherapy research pioneer, who died October 5, 2006, in Nashville, Tennessee, following a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Hans Strupp elicited unusual respect across disciplines, including psychiatry and medicine, and across national boundaries in numerous countries. Hans was truly a person of great distinction; he brought honor to his friends, his discipline, his university, his nation, and his family. Methods for the Reduction of Odometry Errors in Over-Constrained Mobile Robots

This paper presents an analysis of odometry errors in over-constrained mobile robots, that is, vehicles that have more independent motors than degrees of freedom. Examples of over-constrained vehicles are the various 6-wheeled Mars Rovers like Rocky-7, Rocky-8, or Fido.Based on our analysis we developed two novel measures aimed at reducing odometry errors. We also developed a novel method that serves as a framework for the implementation of the two new measures, as well as for other, conventional error reducing measures.One of the two new measures, called Fewest Pulses Measure, makes use of the observation that most terrain irregularities, as well as wheel slip, result in an erroneous overcount of encoder pulses. The second new measure, called Cross-coupled Control Measure, optimizes the motor control algorithm of the robot to reduce synchronization errors that would otherwise result in wheel slip with conventional controllers.The novel method that serves as a framework for other measures is based on so-called Expert Rules. In this paper we formulate three expert rules aimed at reducing dead-reckoning errors. Two of these expert rules are related to the foregoing discussion on error reducing measures. The third expert rule adds a gyroscope to the system and we re-examine the effectiveness of the odometry error-reducing measures in the context of this addition.In the work described in this paper we modified a Pioneer AT skid-steer platform by providing it with four independent drive motors and encoders. We implemented our error-reducing measures and the expert rule method on this over-constrained platform and present experimental results.     

Olympic Technologies

The Olympic Games bring tremendous impacts to host cities, yet little attention has been paid to the variety and novelty in urban technologies that are introduced through the mega-event vehicle. This paper argues that urban transformation associated with the Olympic Games increasingly spans the technological sphere. As a path-breaker the Olympic bid of Tokyo foreshadows a technological revolution that will make the capital of Japan the most advanced urban technology metropolis in the world. This is significant, as this pioneer for the city of the future may yield many valuable insights given the rapid implementation and acceleration of technological innovation proceeding into 2020. Consequently, lessons on how this technology may impact our society can be derived.

Architecture is on the cusp of systemic change, driven by the dynamics of climate and economy, of new technologies and new means of production. There is a growing interest in the dynamics of fluidity, in networks and in the new topologies of surfaces and soft boundaries. This is part of a general cultural response to the contemporary reconfiguration of the concept of ‘nature’ within the discourse of architecture; a change from metaphor to model, from ‘nature’ as a source of formal inspiration to ‘nature’ as a mine of interrelated dynamic processes that are available for analysis and digital simulation. Land reclamation in the refuse dump of open coal mines and its following ecology principle

Through the research on the model of the land reclamation in the refuse dump of Heidaigou open coal mines, it was concerned that ecology was the theoretical basic for the land reclamation of open coal mines. According to the principle of ecological substituting, the land reclamation can be divided into three stages： water and soil conservation, ecological performance and economic performance. Taking the land reclamation in the refuse dump of Heidaigou open coal mines as the practical example, explained the application of the ecological substituting principle on the land reclamation in the open coal mines .     

土壤改良介质对矿区先锋植物富集重金属能力的影响

为了探讨土壤改良介质对矿区先锋植物富集重金属能力的影响,选取郴州市柿竹园尾砂坝、高斯贝尔尾砂坝两处矿区土壤,采用沸石、40%沸石+60%草炭、80%沸石+20%食用菌下脚料3种介质以1∶15混合尾砂坝土壤形成改良土壤;利用改良土壤对多种先锋植物(小飞蓬、花叶水葱、苦菜)盆栽培育4个月,然后测定植物根、茎叶以及改良土壤中Cu、Zn、Pb的含量。结果表明,两处尾砂坝土壤中重金属含量关系为Zn>Pb>Cu,其中高斯贝尔尾砂坝土壤的Cu、Pb含量更高。柿竹园尾砂坝土壤中Zn含量约为Cu含量的6~25倍、Pb含量的3~10倍,而高斯贝尔尾砂坝中Zn含量约为Cu含量的6~8倍、Pb含量的1~3倍。土壤改良介质对植物富集Cu、Zn、Pb的能力均有影响,对于不同重金属污染的土壤,可采取多种植物混合种植,实现重金属污染土壤的修复。     

我国生物技术产业先导性综合评价

文章以生物技术产业为研究对象,建立了生物技术产业的先导性评价指标体系.该指标体系立足于从宏观、中观、微观多层面、多视角透视生物技术产业的先导性,选择模糊Bodar要素法建立综合评价模型.通过数据的收集、整理并计算,得出的生物技术产业先导性评价结果基本上反映出生物技术产业的总体发展特点,即生物技术产业在国民经济发展中确实有较强的先导性.同时这一评价结果也为把生物技术产业作为我国实现现代化过程的先导产业和未来的支柱产业提供了科学的依据.
