Personal exposure in a displacement ventilated room is examined. The stratified flow and the considerable concentration gradients necessitate an improvement of the widely used fully mixing compartmental approach. The exposure of a seated and a standing person in proportion to the stratification height is examined by means of full-scale measurements. A breathing thermal manikin is used to simulate a person. It is found that the flow in the boundary layer around a person is able to a great extent to entrain and transport air from below the breathing zone. In the case of non-passive, heated contaminant sources, this entrainment improves the indoor air quality. Measurements of exposure due to a passive contaminant source show a significant dependence on the flow field as well as on the contaminant source location. Poor system performance is found in the case of a passive contaminant released in the lower part of the room close to the occupant. A personal exposure model for displacement ventilated rooms is proposed. The model takes the influence of gradients and the human thermal boundary layer into account. Two new quantities describing the interaction between a person and the ventilation are defined.  相似文献

Demands for high efficiency and power in the future will bring the use of advanced materials including ceramics, composites and augmented metals in engines and other technologies. In many cases, these materials may be subject to corrosion by high temperature gases and molten salt deposits resulting from contaminants (eg sodium, sulphur and vanadium) in the fuel or environment. This paper gives a short overview of the state of knowledge that exists today concerning ceramics and metals corrosion by fuel contaminants, and of possible new avenues for research and materials development.  相似文献

The effect of trace quantities of ammonia on oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on carbon-supported platinum catalysts in perchloric acid solutions is assessed using rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) technique. The study demonstrates that ammonia has detrimental effects on ORR. The most significant effect takes place in the potential region above 0.7 V vs RHE. The effect is explained by the electrochemical oxidation of ammonia, which blocks Pt active sites and increases the formation of H2O2. This leads to losses in the disk currents and increments in the ring currents. The apparent losses in ORR currents may occur in two ways, namely, through the blocking of the active sites for ORR as well as by generating a small anodic current, which is believed to have a lower contribution. In addition, a detrimental effect of sodium cations in the potential range below 0.75 V vs RHE was demonstrated. This effect is most likely due to the co-adsorption of sodium cations and perchlorate anions on the Pt surface.  相似文献

Adenoviruses are of major public health importance and are associated with a variety of clinical manifestations, i.e. gastroenteritis, eye infections and respiratory infections. The importance of water in the epidemiology of adenoviruses and the potential health risks constituted by adenoviruses in water sources and supplies are widely recognised. This study was conducted to assess the incidence of human adenoviruses in raw and treated water systems. Various raw and treated water were routinely monitored for the presence of adenoviruses, over a 1-year period (July 2000-June 2001). The supplies were derived from acceptable quality surface water sources using treatment processes, which conform to international standards for the production of safe drinking water. Adenoviruses were detected by firstly amplifying the viruses in cell cultures and then amplifying the extracted nucleic acids of these viruses using molecular techniques (nested PCR). The results indicated human adenoviruses present in 13 (12.75%) of the raw and 9 (4.41%) of the treated water samples tested. The combination of cell culture and nested PCR has proved to be a quick and reliable method for the detection of adenoviruses in water environments.  相似文献

In this paper, a continuous and dynamic fugacity-based contaminant fate and transport model is developed. The dynamic interactions among all phases in the physical domain are addressed through the use of the fugacity approach instead of the use of concentration as the unknown variable. The full form of Saint Venant equations is used in order to solve for the hydrodynamic conditions in the river network. Then a fugacity-based advection-dispersion equation is modeled to examine the fate and transport of contaminants in the river network for all phases.The fugacity-based, dynamic and continuous contaminant fate and transport model developed here is applied to Altamaha River in Georgia, USA to demonstrate its use in environmental exposure analysis. Altamaha River is the largest river system east of Mississippi which offers habitat for many species, including about 100 rare endangered species, along its 140 mile course. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a highly hydrophobic and toxic chemical ubiquitous in nature, and atrazine, the most commonly-used agricultural pesticide are modeled as contaminants in this demonstration. Through this approach the concentration distribution of PCBs and atrazine in the water column of Altamaha River as well as the sediments can be obtained with relative ease, which is an improvement over concentration based analysis of phase distribution of contaminants.  相似文献

The tides of the Venetian Lagoon generally vary between −0.5 and +0.7 m asl. Occasionally, they may reach a maximum of 1.5 m (acqua alta) and a minimum of −0.8 m asl (acqua bassa). Intertidal areas, called “barene,” exist all along the coast of the Lagoon. These areas are characterized by canals that concentrate the flow of water (and the deposition of sands) during the rising and waning of the tides, and that inundate and drain the vegetated areas found between canals (where organic-rich clays are deposited). Therefore, since the area is subject to subsidence, in time, sand dykes (the original canals) become juxtaposed to clayey dykes (the original vegetated areas). In addition, the sands form a continuous hydrogeologic network within the clays, very similar to that of a vascular system that effectively drains the whole “barena” deposits. In order to be effective, measures for monitoring, confining, or remediating the transport of pollutants through this kind of environment must explicitly take into account the geologic complexity. The same complexity must be included in the numerical models that support remediation efforts. At the moment, there appears to be no off-the-shelf graphical interface that is able to manage such complexity for TOUGH2. To attempt to solve this problem we have used a calibrated USGS-MODFLOW model, of the barena of “Passo a Campalto” in the Venetian Lagoon, developed with the GMS graphical interface. The model is made of 42 layers, which, apart from the first layer, are 0.5 m thick; the first layer has the thickness distribution of a dump found on top of the barena deposit at Passo a Campalto. Each layer consists of 100×60 square cells, for a total of 252,000 cells, only about half of which are active. Using a FORTRAN routine, we translate this grid, with all the hydrogeologic boundary conditions, into a TOUGH2 input file, and we provide the additional necessary information for running a TOUGH2 simulation. The results are promising, in that we were able to produce TOUGH2 grids with very complex geology and to run the models with success. For visualization, the results can be imported back into GMS as 3D scatter point sets, or they can be plotted with any adequate plotting software such as MatLab. Developing conceptual and numerical models with an elaborate graphical interface such as GMS effectively allows setting up complex problems while concentrating on their physics.  相似文献

Contamination of food with pathogenic bacteria can lead to foodborne illnesses. Food processing surfaces can serve as a medium for cross-contamination if sanitization procedures are inadequate. Ensuring that food processing surfaces are correctly cleaned and sanitized is important in the food industry to reduce risks of foodborne illnesses and their related costs. A handheld fluorescence imaging device was assessed for detection of three types of food residues that have been associated with foodborne illness outbreaks, i.e. spinach leaf, milk, and bovine red meat, on two commonly used processing surfaces, i.e. high-density polyethylene and food grade stainless steel. Fluorescence excitation at 405 nm was supplied by 4 × 10 W light emitting diodes. Interchangeable optical filters were selected to optimise the contrast between the food residues and processing surfaces, using hyperspectral fluorescence imaging. The fluorescence imaging plus image analysis differentiated food residues from the processing surfaces more clearly than visual inspection in ambient lighting. This optical sensing device can be used to detect food fouling on food processing surfaces over relatively large areas, and has potential for use in the food industry as an aid for detection of specific food residues.  相似文献

Sequential Monte Carlo methods for contour tracking of contaminant clouds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This paper addresses the problem of contour tracking for airborne emission of contaminant clouds. This is of particular relevance in the context of anti-terrorism and military applications. This problem is solved by estimating the contour boundary positions using a set of particle filters. The use of sequential Monte Carlo techniques enables the tracking to be performed when the measurements are noisy. The tracking results also include the estimation uncertainty. The proposed technique is illustrated for both SCIPUFF and model generated emission scenarios and simulation experiments demonstrate successful tracking throughout the tracking period for both simple and complex environments.  相似文献
