In this study we conditioned fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) to recognize the odor of a perch (Perca flavescens) by exposing them to perch odor coupled with minnow alarm cue. We then staged encounters between the predator and prey in order to assess whether the predator odor training had any effect on survival of the prey. We tested for a survival effect in the presence and absence of shelter. Our results indicate that fish trained with alarm signals to recognize predators gained a survival benefit during staged encounters with a predator and that habitat characteristics influenced the survival of conditioned fish. 相似文献

Predator odors induce defensive behavior in many prey species. For various reasons, studies carried out up to now have been unable to establish whether predator odor recognition is innate or not. Mostly, only particular odors or wild-living (i.e., experienced) test animals have been used in these studies, restricting the conclusiveness of the observations. In the present study, the behavioral effects of exposure to different predator odors on predator odor-naive laboratory male rats were compared with the effects of different nonpredator odors and of a no-odor control stimulus. Results show that exposure to urine of canids and felids, but not of herbivores or conspecifics, induce defensive behaviors. Taken together, the study provides support for the hypothesis that there is an innate recognition of predator odors in laboratory rats. 相似文献

Our previous chemical investigation showed that the concentrations of urinary volatiles from males were much higher than those
from females in the ferret (Mustela furo). The current study was designed to examine the behavioral significance and ecological relevance of this difference for one
of the main prey of the ferret, the house mouse (Mus musculus). Our data showed that male mice displayed no difference in their response to raw male and female ferret urine. However,
they showed significantly less response to female mouse urine mixed with ferret urine than to pure female mouse urine, and
to female mouse urine mixed with male ferret urine than to female mouse urine mixed with female ferret urine. Furthermore,
high levels of the three major volatiles (quinoline, 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, and 4-hepatanone) in male ferret urine were as
effective as raw male ferret urine was in inhibiting the response of male mice. We discuss the ecological and behavioral significance
of these findings in terms of chemical mimicry and cognitive feature extraction of predator odors in mice. 相似文献

Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana), native to eastern North America, were introduced into Oregon in the 1930's. Bullfrogs are highly efficient predators that are known to eat a variety of prey including other amphibians. In laboratory experiments, we investigated whether juvenile Pacific treefrogs (Hyla regilla) recognize adult bullfrogs as a predatory threat. The ability of prey animals to acquire recognition of an introduced predator has important implications for survival of the prey. We found that treefrogs from a population that co-occurred with bullfrogs showed a strong avoidance of chemical cues of bullfrogs. In contrast, treefrogs from a population that did not co-occur with bullfrogs, did not respond to the bullfrog cues. Additional experiments showed that both populations of treefrogs use chemical cues to mediate predation risk. Treefrogs from both populations avoided chemical alarm cues from injured conspecifics. 相似文献

The paper presents a biologically inspired multi-level neural-schema architecture for prey catching and predator avoidance in single and multiple autonomous robotic systems. The architecture
is inspired on anuran (frogs and toads) neuroethological studies and wolf pack group behaviors. The single robot architecture exploits visuomotor coordination models developed to
explain anuran behavior in the presence of preys and predators. The multiple robot architecture extends the individual prey
catching and predator avoidance model to experiment with group behavior. The robotic modeling architecture distinguishes between
higher-level schemas representing behavior and lower-level neural structures representing brain regions. We present results
from single and multiple robot experiments developed using the NSL/ASL/MIRO system and Sony AIBO ERS-210 robots. 相似文献

Predator–prey systems with linear and logistic intrinsic growth rate of the prey are analyzed. The models incorporate the mutual interference between predators into the functional response which stabilizes predator–prey interactions in the system. Positive and elementary stable nonstandard (PESN) finite-difference methods, having the same qualitative features as the corresponding continuous predator–prey models, are formulated and analyzed. The proposed numerical techniques are based on a nonlocal modeling of the growth-rate function and a nonstandard discretization of the time derivative. This discretization approach leads to significant qualitative improvements in the behavior of the numerical solution. In addition, it allows for the use of an essentially implicit method for the cost of an explicit method. Applications of the PESN methods to specific predator–prey systems are also presented. 相似文献

In previous experiments, chemical stimuli from northern pike (Esox lucius) elicited fright responses from pike-naive fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) only if the pike had recently eaten conspecific minnows. We used a behavioral assay to determine if the fright response is the result of the incorporation of the minnow alarm pheromone into the chemical signature of the pike. Because the alarm substance cells (epidermal club cells) of fathead minnows are seasonally lost by males, we used chemical stimuli from pike that had eaten breeding male minnows as a control stimulus. In independent laboratory and field experiments, pike-naive minnows exhibited fright reactions (e.g., increased shelter use, avoidance) when exposed to water from tanks containing pike that had eaten nonbreeding fatheads (with alarm substance cells), but not to water from tanks containing pike that had eaten breeding male fatheads (without alarm substance cells). These data indicate that the fathead minnow alarm pheromone chemically labels northern pike as dangerous to pike-naive receivers. 相似文献

Episyrphus balteatus DeGeer (Diptera, Syrphidae) is an abundant and efficient aphid-specific predator. We tested the electroantennographic (EAG)
response of this syrphid fly to the common aphid alarm pheromone, (E)-β-farnesene (EβF), and to several plant volatiles, including
terpenoids (mono- and sesquiterpenes) and green leaf volatiles (C6 and C9 alcohols and aldehydes). Monoterpenes evoked significant
EAG responses, whereas sesquiterpenes were inactive, except for the aphid alarm pheromone (EβF). The most pronounced antennal
responses were elicited by six and nine carbon green leaf alcohols and aldehydes [i.e., (Z)-3-hexenol, (E)-2-hexenol, (E)-2-hexenal, and hexanal]. To investigate the behavioral activity of some of these EAG-active compounds, E. balteatus females were exposed to R-(+)-limonene (monoterpene), (Z)-3-hexenol (green leaf alcohol), and EβF (sesquiterpene, common aphid alarm pheromone). A single E. balteatus gravid female was exposed for 10 min to an aphid-free Vicia faba plant that was co-located with a semiochemical dispenser. Without additional semiochemical, hoverfly females were not attracted
to this plant, and no oviposition was observed. The monoterpene R-(+)-limonene did not affect the females’ foraging behavior, whereas (Z)-3-hexenol and EβF increased the time of flight and acceptance of the host plant. Moreover, these two chemicals induced oviposition
on aphid-free plants, suggesting that selection of the oviposition site by predatory hoverflies relies on the perception of
a volatile blend composed of prey pheromone and typical plant green leaf volatiles. 相似文献

The present work characterizes static behaviour of a CSTBR with existing food chain relationship, for a case when base carbon and energy source exhibits toxic influence on enzymatic pathways of all microorganisms. Some bifurcation diagrams for representative process parameters are presented, together with characteristic phase plane plots. Conditions leading to induction of persistent oscillations of substrate and cell concentration are derived, and ways to avoid them are also given herein. 相似文献
