Temperature control offers benefits in land‐based marine aquaculture: stock growth rates may be enhanced by heating in winter; mortality rates in summer may be reduced by cooling. However, if the plant is not well designed, temperature control may create very large energy demands. This paper describes the application of temperature control in abalone aquaculture in New Zealand, with a focus on energy considerations in plant design. An abalone farm using a semi‐closed water conditioning system is used as a case study for which an energy model, based on a heat pump system, is developed. We tested the feasibility of using polymer membranes for a self-hydrating packaging system to reconstitute freeze-dried foods using nonpurified water. Several commercial membranes were screened according to (1) hydration rate, (2) water permeability, (3) passage of microorganisms, (4) salt rejection, and (5) strength. The most promising membranes were used for developing and testing prototype packaging systems. A feasible self-contained rehydration system was a nylon-6 polyamide membrane that rehydrated the freeze-dried food within 30 min while passage of microorganisms was prevented. The temperature was 37°C, and the food contained 0.5g/5g of a low molecular weight solute (salt). Such self-contained membrane rehydration systems must be designed to accommodate expected environmental conditions such as temperature, relative humidity, and nature of the product.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Over the past several decades methyl tert‐butyl ether (MTBE) as additive to gasoline, intended to either boost ratings of fuel or to reduce air pollution, has been accepted worldwide. Since MTBE has high water solubility, the occurrence of fuel spills or leaks from underground storage tanks or transferring pipeline has led to the contamination of natural waters. In this study the degradation of aqueous MTBE at relatively high concentrations was investigated by a UV‐visible/ZnO/H2O2 photocatalytic process. The effects of important operational parameters such as pH, amount of H2O2, catalyst loading and irradiation time were also investigated. Concentration of MTBE and intermediates such as tert‐butyl formate and tert‐butyl alcohol were measured. RESULTS: Time required for complete degradation increased from 20 to 150 min when the initial concentration was increased from 10 to 500 mg L?1. The first‐order rate constants for degradation of MTBE were estimated to be 0.183–0.022 min?1 as the concentration increased from 10 to 500 mg L?1. Study of the overall mineralization monitored by total organic carbon analysis showed that at an initial concentration of 100 mg L?1 MTBE complete mineralization was obtained after 100 min under UV‐visible/ZnO/H2O2 photocatalysis. CONCLUSION: The data presented in this paper clearly indicated that UV‐visible/ZnO/O2 as an advanced oxidation process provides an efficient treatment alternative for the remediation of MTBE‐contaminated waters. Methanol extracts of the green algaUlva pertusa contain four kinds of glycerolipids that are active as feeding-stimulants for marine herbivorous gastropods. These compounds are digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG), 1,2-diacylglycerly-4-O-(N,N,N-trimethyl)-homoserine (DGTH), 1-monoacylglyceryl-4'-O-(N,N,N-trimethyl)-homoserine (MGTH), and 6-sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol (SQDG). The various gastropods exhibit marked specificity, however, as young abaloneHaliotis discus respond to DGDG and DGTH at minute dosages of 20–30 g/sample zone, but do not respond to 300 g of SQDG, which is a phagostimulant for two other kinds of gastropods,Turbo comutus andOmphalius pfeifferi.Chemical Studies on Phagostimulants for Marine Gastropods. Phagostimulant activity of glycerolipids such as digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG), 6-sulfoquinovosyldiacylglycerol (SQDG), phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), etc., have been examined using the Avicel plate method for three kinds of marine herbivorous gastropods, the abaloneHaliotis discus, the turban shellTurbo cornutus, and the topshellOmphalius pfeifferi. DGDG showed strong activity for all the test animals. SQDG was much less active than the other glycerolipids for abalone. The turban shell and the top shell responded more or less sensitively to all tested glycerolipids at doses of 10–20g/sample zone.Chemical Studies on Phagostimulants for Marine Gastropods. Part VIII. Hard coal mining in the German Ruhr district has a tradition of more than 200 years. Starting in the south near the river Ruhr with mining of seams near to the surface, mining wandered to the north with coal seams deeper and deeper. In the same way all environmental effects of mining wandered from south to north, as there are abandoned mining sites, contaminated areas, burning mining dumps, subsided areas and gas accesses at day ground. This all happened in a very high populated area with more than four million inhabitants. Therefore Germany has a long tradition in solving environmental problems of mining activities. The very good interaction of mine authority, mining companies and the mine workers' union is the main reason why the problems of decreasing mining activities in Germany were solved without economic, environmental or social hazards.  相似文献

为研究氮肥污染对桂林红黏土物理力学性质的影响,使用氨水(NH3·H2O)溶液对具有代表性的桂林雁山红黏土进行浸泡,考虑氨水质量分数(0,4.5%,9.0%,13.5%,18.0%)和养护时间(1,7,14 d)双因子因素,通过室内试验,分析氨水污染对桂林雁山红黏土物理力学性质的影响规律。试验结果表明:随着氨水质量分数及养护时间的增加,桂林雁山红黏土的质量、含水率、相对密度和液塑限均增大,压缩模量减小,土体压缩性增强;碱-土作用是引起红黏土物理力学性质发生变化的主要原因,其相互作用导致红黏土颗粒间的胶结物被溶解后又重新生成絮状物,使其原本稳定的结构状态发生改变。  相似文献
