A recent review of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement has concluded that while controls on phosphorus inputs to Lake Michigan achieved the desired effect in offshore waters, the nearshore region continues to suffer from elevated phosphorus levels. Failure to achieve trophic state goals in the nearshore is manifested in nuisance growth of Cladophora and attendant impacts on property owners, utilities, and the public health and welfare. This study focuses on a site in Lake Michigan near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where nuisance growth of Cladophora and associated beach fouling occur regularly. A mechanistic model simulating Cladophora growth, suitable for guiding nutrient management in the Great Lakes nearshore, is presented. The model represents an update of the Canale and Auer framework, reflecting current understandings of Cladophora ecology and offering a user-friendly interface making the software more widely available to decision makers. This Great Lakes Cladophora Model (GLCM) is first validated for the Auer/Canale data set collected in 1979 at a site on Lake Huron and then for a data set developed in 2006 for a site on Lake Michigan. Model performance under the strikingly different forcing conditions (depth, light, phosphorus levels) characteristic of these two sites affirms the widespread applicability of the tool. The GLCM is then extended to examine the impacts of ecosystem perturbation (dreissenid colonization) on Cladophora growth and to future approaches to monitoring and management.  相似文献

综合岩心、地震、测井等资料,对民丰洼陷沙四段近岸水下扇砂砾岩体沉积特征进行了研究。结果表明,该类沉积体发育在陡岸靠近断层下降盘的深水区,在盆地的深陷扩张期有较多分布;平面为扇形,纵剖面上呈楔形,垂向上具有向上变细的正旋回特征,由近源至远源可细分为内扇、中扇、外扇3个亚相,在主要井段上可清楚识别。近岸水下扇中扇辨状水道和前缘砂体具有良好的储集物性,它以其有利的生储盖组合条件成为油田具有潜力的勘探目标之一。  相似文献

Sediment samples were collected from nearshore, tributary and beach environments within and surrounding the northern part of Lake Erie, Ontario to determine the concentrations and distribution of microplastics. Following density separation and microscopic analysis of 29 samples, a total of 1178 microplastic particles were identified. Thirteen nearshore samples contained 0–391 microplastic particles per kg dry weight sediment (kg?1), whereas 4 tributary samples contained 10–462?kg?1 and 12 beach samples contained 50–146?kg?1. The highest concentrations of nearshore microplastics were from near the mouths of the Detroit River in the western basin and the Grand River in the eastern basin, reflecting an urban influence. The highest microplastic concentrations in beach samples were determined from Rondeau Beach in the central basin where geomorphology affects plastics concentration. The Welland Canal sample in the eastern basin contained the greatest concentration of microplastics of the tributary samples, which is consistent with high population density and shipping traffic. The overall abundance of microplastic in northern Lake Erie nearshore, tributary and beach samples is 6 times lower than in sediment sampled from northern Lake Ontario. The nearshore and beach sample results potentially reflect the transport patterns of floating plastics modeled for Lake Erie, which predict that the majority of plastic particles entering the lake are transported to southern shoreline regions rather than northern areas.  相似文献

Urban centers line western Lake Ontario where urban rivers, wastewater treatment plants and stormwater load nutrients, major ions and suspended solids to the nearshore. In 2018, nearshore water quality and associated physical conditions bordering the cities of Toronto and Mississauga were assessed as a benchmark for future effects of urban growth and municipal infrastructure projects to improve water quality. Conductivity and UV-fluorescence were used as water quality surrogates and mapped over blocks of shoreline stratified by distance offshore. Patterns in UV-fluorescence aligned with loading points, and generally higher levels near the shoreline, were correlated with concentrations of nutrients, major ions and suspended solids. Water quality was more land-impacted over the shoreline from the Credit River to Humber Bay contrasting with the more lake-like conditions from Toronto Eastern Beaches to the Rouge River. Within Toronto Harbour, cross-harbour gradients in water quality varied with weather-related changes in river and storm water loading. Mixing areas at wastewater treatment plant outfalls and tributary mouths, frequently shaped by alongshore lake circulation, resulted in a mosaic of water quality over the shoreline. Area-wide elevation of chloride and conductivity, and poorer water quality in late spring, was linked to heightened river discharge. Thermal stratification affected how discharges were distributed in the water column, but measurements at the lake surface reflected the strongest overall land-effects on water quality. The patterns of temporal-spatial variability identified within geographically-defined areas of shoreline can be used as past footprints in future monitoring to detect change.  相似文献

Riverine inputs are a major source of nutrients to the Laurentian Great Lakes and have important effects on nearshore biological processes, where mixing between river and lake water leads to formation of heterogeneous river plumes. We examined the physical and chemical characteristics of the St. Joseph River plume in southern Lake Michigan between May and October 2011, and in October 2012, June 2013 and April 2014. Specific electric conductivity and stable isotopes of water were used to quantify the fraction of river water (FRW) at sampling sites in Lake Michigan. Both tracers predicted similar patterns of FRW among sites; however, there was a systematic offset between the two methods, and specific electric conductivity method under-predicted the FRW by ~5%. We observed a distinct, seasonally varying river plume, with plume size correlated with flow rate of St. Joseph River. Within the plume, sediments and nutrients were non-conservative and exhibited significant and seasonally varying losses that we attribute to settling of particle-bound nutrients and/or nutrients in particulate phase below the plume. The characteristics and the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of the river plume documented here may have important implications for the nearshore biogeochemistry of the Great Lakes and for understanding the roles of these features in ecological processes in nearshore areas.  相似文献

Each winter, municipal water supply and thermal power plants drawing water from the Great Lakes face the problem of their water intakes becoming blocked by frazil ice formed in the lakes. Little is known about the manner in which frazil forms, how it is drawn down to the depths at which the intakes are located, and how to prevent frazil from fully blocking intakes. This paper presents an overview of frazil formation and intake blockage in the Great Lakes. The paper first reviews the current understanding of the processes of frazil formation and intake blockage, and it adds new insight regarding the processes. It then describes the problem by way of case-study examples of frazil blockage of two intakes in Lake Michigan. Based on the case studies, and experiences with other intakes in the Great Lakes, the paper outlines methods for monitoring and mitigating frazil blockage. Two options are recommended: monitoring rate of water level drop in the pump forebay onshore from the intake, and rate of headloss increase between the intake and the forebay. Laboratory modeling of intake blockage is then presented.  相似文献

Modeled nearshore wave propagation was investigated downstream of simulated wave energy converters (WECs) to evaluate overall near- and far-field effects of WEC arrays. Model sensitivity to WEC characteristics and WEC array deployment scenarios was evaluated using a modified version of an industry standard wave model, Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN), which allows the incorporation of device-specific WEC characteristics to specify obstacle transmission. The sensitivity study illustrated that WEC device type and subsequently its size directly resulted in wave height variations in the lee of the WEC array. Wave heights decreased up to 30% between modeled scenarios with and without WECs for large arrays (100 devices) of relatively sizable devices (26 m in diameter) with peak power generation near to the modeled incident wave height. Other WEC types resulted in less than 15% differences in modeled wave height with and without WECs, with lesser influence for WECs less than 10 m in diameter. Wave directions and periods were largely insensitive to changes in parameters. However, additional model parameterization and analysis are required to fully explore the model sensitivity of peak wave period and mean wave direction to the varying of the parameters.  相似文献

Nearshore regions of lakes are important sources of fish, and can be strongly influenced by anthropogenic inputs of nutrients as well as contaminants. This study characterizes food web structure, mercury concentrations, and biomagnification of mercury in two embayments in northern Lake Victoria that differ in their connectivity to the open lake, trophic status, and the influence of local anthropogenic pollution. Murchison Bay is a semi-confined hypereutrophic bay in a densely populated region, while Napoleon Gulf is mesotrophic and is well flushed with water from the open lake. Based on stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis, food web structure was similar at both sites, with short food chains and conspecific fish occupying similar trophic positions. However, there were strong differences in net phytoplankton δ15N and δ13C between sites; net phytoplankton δ13C was largely related to trophic status, while δ15N values appeared to be influenced by inputs of human waste and the prevalence of biological nitrogen fixation. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in fish were consistently below 200 ng/g wet weight, and despite elevated THg concentrations in water in Murchison Bay, THg concentrations in net phytoplankton and fish from both embayments did not differ, highlighting that THg in water is not always a good predictor of concentrations in fish. We also observed that biomagnification of mercury was occurring at a lower rate in Murchison Bay than in Napoleon Gulf, and we propose that the hypereutrophic state of Murchison Bay may be acting to reduce potential Hg exposure for higher trophic level fish.  相似文献

The paper introduces a complete set of Boussinesq-type equations suitable for water waves and wave-induced nearshore circulation over an inhomogeneous, permeable bottom. The derivation starts with the conventional expansion of the fluid particle velocity as a polynomial of the vertical coordinate z followed by the depth integration of the vertical components of the Euler equations for the fluid layer and the volume-averaged equations for the porous layer to obtain the pressure field. Inserting the kinematics and pressure field into the Euler and volume-averaged equations on the horizontal plane results in a set of Boussinesq-type momentum equations with vertical vorticity and z-dependent terms. A new approach to eliminating the z dependency in the Boussinesq-type equations is introduced. It allows for the existence and advection of the vertical vorticity in the flow field with the accuracy consistent with the level of approximation in the Boussinesq-type equations for the pure wave motion. Examination of the scaling of the resistance force reveals the significance of the vertical velocity to the pressure field in the porous layer and leads to the retention of higher-order terms associated with the resistance force. The equations are truncated at O(μ4), where μ = measure of frequency dispersion. An analysis of the vortical property of the resultant equations indicates that the energy dissipation in the porous layer can serve as a source of vertical vorticity up to the leading order. In comparison with the existing Boussinesq-type equations for both permeable and impermeable bottoms, the complete set of equations improve the accuracy of potential vorticity as well as the damping rate. The new equations retain the conservation of potential vorticity up to O(μ2). Such a property is desirable for modeling wave-induced nearshore circulation but is absent in existing Boussinesq-type equations.  相似文献

The extent of nutrient enrichment over the urbanized shoreline of western Lake Ontario bordering the Cities of Toronto and Mississauga was investigated in 2018. Concentrations of total phosphorus were higher and more wide-ranging compared with nearshore reference areas in eastern Lake Ontario. Area-weighted chlorophyll a was higher over the shoreline from the mouth of the Credit River to Humber Bay west of Toronto Harbour compared with that to the east from the Toronto Beaches to the Rouge River, a pattern also seen broadly in concentrations of phosphorus fractions and nitrates. Concentrations of phosphate measured by mass spectrometry, and using an internal standard to minimize sampling losses, were higher in Toronto Inner Harbour, near wastewater outfalls, river mouths, and to varying extent over the mixing areas of these discharges. Chlorophyll a suggested broadly oligotrophic to oligo-mesotrophic conditions despite areas with nutrient fractions suggestive of more productive conditions. Toronto Inner Harbour was mesotrophic, with wide-ranging levels of phosphorus fractions strongly influenced by the variable loading from the Don River into the harbour. Phosphorus fractions in the harbour quays which also receive CSOs discharges were elevated at times. Blooms or scums of planktonic algae were not observed. Elevated concentrations of phosphate were found at shallow depths suitable for growth of the green algae Cladophora. As these urban areas continue to grow, the potential for additional nutrient loading to exacerbate growth of algae should be watched given the present conditions that indicate variable but pervasive nutrient enrichment.  相似文献
