Firms’ involvement in Open Source projects: A trade-off between software structural quality and popularity

Open Source (OS) was born as a pragmatic alternative to the ideology of Free Software and it is now increasingly seen by companies as a new approach to developing and making business upon software. Whereas the role of firms is clear for commercial OS projects, it still needs investigation for projects based on communities. This paper analyses the impact of firms’ participation on popularity and internal software design quality for 643 SourceForge.net projects. Results show that firms’ involvement improves the ranking of OS projects, but, on the other hand, puts corporate constraints to OS developing practices, thus leading to lower structural software design quality.

油田企业科技项目外部协作可以有效利用油田企业的外部科技资源,推动油田科技进步和科技队伍素质的提高,促进科技成果水平上台阶和科技人才的成长,增强油田企业自主创新能力。外协工作必须杜绝单纯花钱买成果、不联系具体生产实际、知识产权不明、转包外协工作和外协没有实际内容等问题。开展外协工作,必须做好外协的调研工作、加强外协论证工作、强化合同约束、提高外协科技攻关水平、重视知识产权技术的开发、强化外协过程的监督、加强外协的总结考核工作和建立外协工作机制。

Towards a contingent approach of customer involvement in defence projects: An exploratory study

This paper reports the main results of an exploratory, multiple case study investigating customer involvement practices in system development projects in the Israeli defence industry. The study proposes and examines a theoretical contingency model regarding the effect of customer involvement modes on project success, moderated by project characteristics. It focuses specifically on the working mode of customers' representatives along the continuum between external supervision to full participation in project activities.     

No More Stopping

The dissolution of the conventional breaking points in the construction and completion phases of a building's delivery has blurred ‘the distinction between the production of design intent and the transmission of information’. Here Richard Garber , Director of the School of Architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), advocates that architects should use this as an opportunity to widen their remit, gaining agency and with it responsibility and the financial rewards to practice. Here he draws from the examples of UNStudio, GLUCK+ and his own New-York based practice, GRO Architects.     

Prejudicial Narratives: Building Tomorrow's World Today

Film production requires world building: the power to visualise and bring to life narrative through a film's total environment. This is often entirely speculative, imagining alternative or future worlds. Here, Alex McDowell , acclaimed British production designer, producer and Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) describes his world-building, narrative approach to production design, which he consolidated in the Steven Spielberg film Minority Report (2002) that envisioned Washington DC in the year 2050. The possibilities of this storytelling technique are demonstrated by its transference into real-life projects, such as the immersive model that his production company, 5D GlobalStudio, developed for Al Baydha, a Bedouin village in Saudi Arabia.     

Non‐destructive investigation

So‐called ‘dynamic'or ‘counterflow'insulation systems have already been installed in buildings in France and Sweden for which significant improvements over ‘classic’ insulation methods have been reported. Here, the authors describe a French study, including full‐scale laboratory tests, into the actual efficiency of a ‘permeodynamic’ version. A theoretical model has been developed from which to derive thermal efficiency values, and is compared with the test results. The limits of such dynamic systems, and their most feasible applications, are then discussed. The main conclusion is that conventional insulation techniques remain competitive for houses, but permeodynamic systems offer greater possibilities for industrial buildings.

本文主要为了地质事业单位建立全面规范、公开透明的地质调查项目预算管理新机制,地质调查项目预算管理以目标、需求、问题为导向,大力推进单位业务管理和项目管理有机融合,全面实现项目预算管理和项目质量管理相互促进,积极促进经济主体责任和绩效考核评价有效落实。通过具体分析项目预算管理在项目任务分工、预算编制和成果评价等方面存在的不足,地质事业单位从项目组织架构及管理流程,项目预算标准及主体责任,项目预算绩效考核评价及反馈等方面提出完善策略;从项目顶层设计、项目治理体系建设、预算制度建设、经济责任机制建设、绩效考评应用机制建设等五个方面构建地质事业单位项目预算管理体系;初步提出形成以目标管理为导向、预算管理为主体、制度管理为保障、责任管理为驱动、应用管理为成果的地质调查项目预算管理模式。     

Toward a model of socializing project team members: An integrative approach

Project work is becoming more and more important in everyday business, as is staffing the right newcomers for the project. Recognizing that not all new project team workers possess equally important specific knowledge, skills and abilities for the success of projects, we draw on project management, human resource management, and organizational socialization literature to develop a framework on how new project team members might be socialized, depending on their strategic value for the project. We specifically draw on the socialization tactics literature and propose how four categories of new employees – Internal specialists, External specialists, External generalists and Internal generalists; based on two dimensions – work task complexity and employment mode, can be socialized more effectively. Implications for theory and practice are discussed as well.
